RJ1 - Monarch Beg. SG "Shaking the Lurker Tree"

Well played Rubberjello & Yaype :goodjob:

Here's a small thought:

roads here

would link us into the trade network allowing us to make some money from our excess resources :)

Back again now :)

Looking good so far, and I think Monarchy was the right way to go. Since the continent is so small, I think we will have to fight for our spot in it. Not normally a warmongerer, but if we have to ;)

Got it (I think I am up).

It looks like there will be more going on htis time than just building things and moving workers. I haven't had a look at the save yet but will probably have everything done by tomorrow.

I haven't yet finished all of my turns due to RL getting in the way of some quality game time. Here is the first five turns to tie you over.

Preturn:
Well the map sure has changed since my last turn. Our empire is growing and we are dominating the histograph. A quick diplo check shows we are up Theology on Mongolia and up Printing Press on Japan, India, and Germany. We seem to be down Invention and Chivalry though. After scanning our cities, I do notice we are spread rather thin and increasing our military might be a good idea.

Turn 1 - 360ad
- Wonsan MI -> horseman
- Pusan MI -> library
- Hyansan marketplace -> pikeman
- send settler to Chonju
- get local workers to start mining BG near Chonju

Turn 2 - 370ad
- workers working
- moving galley up coast of China planning for a suicide run through the empty space NE of the mainland

Turn 3 - 380ad
- Cheju marketplace -> galley
- Pyongsong MI -> horseman
- moving horsemen stack south through Japanese territory we see our first Chinese troops (MI) and decide to attack. We lose 2 horsemen before taking them out.

In transition - Russia declares war on China and I decline a ROP with Mongolia (they will soon have their UU online and I don't want to give them a free ticket to march across our land).

Turn 4 - 390ad
- Pyongyang MI -> horseman
- Wonsan horseman -> pikeman
- Namp'o library -> galley
- Taejon courthouse -> library
- I move Assault Force Horse (or horsey stack) to mountain tile for defense and recuperation. China is sending quite a few MI at the southern Japanese cities and I don't want to lose our troops on a poor gamble.
- send galley on suicide mission to the north of Japan
- Sci check - Education in 4 turns @ -1gpt
- military check - we are strong against everyone except Germany

Turn 5 - 400ad
- Pusan library -> horseman
- Hyangsan pikeman -> horseman
- Germany starts building Leo's
- trade details - I trade PP to India (Japan had nothing of value) for Chivalry, WM, 32g, and 14gpt. Traded Theology to Russia for 100g and WM (all they had). Then traded PP and Chiv to Germany for Invention and 7g. India has Gunpowder and will not sell it at any price (we have over 1000g).

There are the first five turns. I should have the rest done by tomorrow.

With the discovery of Chivalry, we should try to upgrade as many of our horsies as we can and prepare for an assault on Japan or Mongolia (China is too far away at the moment). With China at war with Japan and Russia, we should take the opportunity to let the AI beat the crap out of each other while we rebuild and develop our army.

Your comments and strategies are welcome as I will have a chance to implement them before the end of my turns.

Did Japan already have Chivalry & Theology? If not then you've given them 2 (possibly 3) free techs.

Moving right along here....thanks for the good turns, Brewster!

ROSTER:
Yaype
Brewster (Just played)
Tarkeel (Is up)
Dark Savant (Gettin' ready)
TedJackson
Rubberjello

RJ: Brewster still has five more turns to play ... I know this game is moving fast, but I think we should let people finish their turns first. :) :crazyeye:

Oopsie! Bad me. I read through 'em, at first, but then I've been reading so many other SGs since that I forgot it was only 5 turns!
:o

Here is the save. I will post the rest of my turns tonight.

Here is a little teaser. I found the Iroquois!

T6) 410ad
- Chinses MI redline one horse and bring another into the yellow -> I decide to retreat and regroup.
- move MI ministack across river near Kagoshima -> will attack next turn
- move 4 workers into Mongolian territory (the second pic from TedJackson) to connect the two empires for trade
- suicide galley spots purple border to the north of its position
- edu due in 2 -> adjust slider to get 47gpt

T7) 420ad :smoke:
- Wonsan pikeman -> knight
- upgrade horse -> knight for 80g
- attack Kagoshima and take out the only Chinese spearman without losing any HP
- road to Mongolia complete (they have ivory and we have excess wines, dyes, and spice). We don't really need the extra happiness right now so I will defer the trading to the next person.
- we make contact with the Iroquois (they are WAY behind) and trade CoL for WM. The Iros are on a nice little island with 7 silks and a few rivers. They will not be a factor.

T8) 430ad
- research Education -> Astronomy
- Namp'o galley -> harbor
- move remaining MI and two horse towards Edo

T9) 440ad
- move units in our territory towards the newly aquired towns in the northern part of our empire (with Japan, Mongolia, and India getting their UU's, we should be prepared for an attack).
IT - China sues for peace -> I decline

T10) 450ad
- Inch'on horbor-> galley
- workers working

Diplo check
- Germany -> 11g / down Edu
- Japan -> 17g / down Edu
- Mongolia -> 18g / down Inv, PP, and Edu / have ivory available
- India -> 11g / up Gunpowder / down Edu

Sci check
- Astonomy due in 8 @ +13gpt (70% research)

I think we should let the Chinese be after taking Edo (they still have the Japanese and Russians to deal with) and start to upgrade our spearmen and horsemen in preparation against a possible sneak attack from either India, Mongolia, or Japan. Some more infastructure (lib and unis) would be nice to boost our research rate.

I got it

Edit: Finished

Pre turn:

Diplo Check:
Mongols: 18g, down 3 techs
Germany: 11g, down 1 tech (Edu)

Decide to keep it, since it is a better staging post then Kagoshima.
Got 4 captured workers, set them to build supply line backwards

IB 8:
Germany demands contact with Iroquois, we call his bluff and refuse him.
Mongols wants to sell Ivory for Wines and 28 gpt, politely decline

Discover Astronomy, switch to banking at 70%, 20 gpt

Turn 8: 530 AD
P'yongyang: Knight -> Knight
Namp'o: Harbor-> Caravel
Sariwon: Courthouse -> Marketplace

Upgrade galley for 20g

Diplo check:
Mongols: 5g, down PP + Edu
Germany: 116g, up gunpowder, down Astro
India: 24g, up gunp, down Astro
Iroquois: Now has contact with India and Germany, 9g, just missing Construction for new age

Trades:
Germany: Astronomy for Gunpowder + WM + 116g
India: Astronomy for 3g + 6gpt

Nobody else has anything worthwhile for gunpowder or astronomy.
We are lucky, and already have a gunpowder hooked up outside Chonju, with 2 more in easy reach.
Mongols have 4 salpeter
Iroquois and China have 1

Turn 10: 550 AD
Chonju: Courthouse -> Aqueduct

4/4 Knight defeats 3/3 Chinese Spear, taking 3 damage but promoted to elite
5/5 Sword defeats 3/3 Chinese spear, taking 1 damage
4/4 Knight redlines 3/3 Chinese MI, but is defeated, promoting MI to vet :(
4/4 Knight defeats 2/4 Chinese MI, taking 1 damage and razes Tatung.

Looking good for us now, have a good path for our knights and a few rampaging in China. India is currently paying us 20 gpt, which should put a dampener on their research.

It sounds like the war is coming along. :goodjob:

For a Golden Age, we should either capture Kyoto or build Newton's University for the scientific requirement. Smith's can meet the commercial requirement. It's going to take cavalry to finish off our opponents without a lot of pain, now that muskets are starting to show up.

Anyway, I've got it and can probably play this evening.

Actually, only the Mongols are set to build muskets :) Which makes them the next target, before they can build out the saltpeter too much.

That saltpeter situation is sweet. Only the Chinese and Mongols seem to have any (maybe Japanese, may have forgotten one or two), so nobody can build any units to match us until mid-Industrial. We definitely should go on the offensive, especially once we get cavalry. :lol: :evil: :mischief:

Actually, Knights against Muskets are not *THAT* bad of a deal. You can keep your losses to a fair minimum as long as you attack in large "Stacks of Death" and get fairly lucky with red-lining and retreating vs. dieing. For some reason, Muskets I hold in the lowest regard of any of the defensive units. I don't have any data to back it up, but it seems to me that I've been hurt far more by a stack of defending Pikes then by a stack of the same number of Muskets! :)

I think we got a bit lucky on the saltpeter situation. I'm glad to see India and Germany without but rather dismayed to see the Mongols have three extra (they will probably trade with the latter two). If push comes to shove, we need to get the Mongols allied against the Germans and Indians.

BTW: How did we end up playing against four civs who all get their UU from the same tech (chivalry)? This will make the next 50 or so turns quite a bit more interesting.

Which of the available wonders should we choose? As far as I know, nobody has completed any of the second age wonders so we should have our pick. My vote is for either Copernicus or Sun Tzu.

Considering our current course, I think any war-related wonders would be quite useful. I usually don't really start going after wonders until the latter half of this age, then I go for as many as possible. But for now, Sun Tzu's and/or Leonardo's would be best IMHO (and build up a bunch of knights with the latter to convert to cavalry).

Both Sun Tzu's and Leonardo's will be a great help. If we can manage both then go for it.

regards

Ted

Sistine will finish in a few turns, and have Sun Tzu started by a few turns. Looks like fierce competition for them though, and this is the age of wonder flipping after all.

Chinas saltpeter isn't much of a concern really, unless the Japanese occupy that city. Mongols are though, but they don't have gunpowder yet, but will soon.

About the resources, I think Japan is without Iron as well, which means no Samurai :)

Here's a summary of my ten turns. Sorry, no time for a full report.

TECH: Discovered Banking and started on Chemistry (on the way to Military Tradition). Music Theory is now out there, and some other civs are now building Bach's.

BUILDINGS: I decided to focus on infrastructure in our cities this round. Next leader has the option of switching some of our cities back to knights and muskets (in fact, I recommend this).

WONDERS: I decided to take Sun Tzu as our first wonder instead of Sistine (we don't have a single cathedral, and don't have much use for them with 6 native luxuries). Our rivals have completed Sistine and Copernicus in the meantime; Leonardo and Bach are currently live.

MILITARY: I used Sun Tzu's free barracks to upgrade a whole bunch of our units; Wonsan's wonder build is currently Leonardo, but that's not due for 15 turns and we may yet get beaten to that. Also, I wanted that military now.

THOSE CONFOUNDED OTHER CIVS: India sneak attacked and captured Haeju. :mad: I have retaken the city, and decided to sign the Mongols to an alliance against the Indians, to weaken both of them. The Indians will probably attempt a landing in our west -- I have a knight in the region to serve as zone defense. On the Chinese front, our knights have taken 2 more Chinese cities; I did not raze them, as we have no settlers nearby to re-claim the land and the risk of a flip back is fairly low. We have 9 knights currently hanging out in our most recent capture on that front; this force is sufficient to make significantly more progress, but I don't think it will be enough to take out the Chinese entirely without reinforcements.

Some of our military is currently unmoved at the end of the turn; the next leader has the option of re-maneuvering them. In particular, now that I have the Mongols tying up the Indians, our forces on that front (mostly hanging out in Haeju right now) might be better used elsewhere.

Not my best turn, sadly, but we're continuing to advance.

May TedJackson, our next leader, continue our progress! :) We'll complete the Forbidden Palace on his turn, which should enhance our economic position enormously.
