Role Play Challenge: FDR's Dream

The biggest problem with open borders with Cy is potential bad relations with a future Toku meeting " You have traded with our worse enemy". The emphasis is diplomacy with Toku, not a steller FDR economy.

Funnt, REXing Cathy trashed her economy early and brought to an absolute beast later on. I fear FDR may start with a fabtastic early economy which can quickly go into the toilet because of his friend Toku.

check cyrus's EPs if they are all being directed at you he hasn't met anyone else yet so its safe to open borders (civics changes slightly mess this up but aren't too hard to keep track of) and if he has met someone else they must be reachable without optics.

mercantilism won't be good for your economy, get some off continent cities to reduce the damage as much as possible

in terms of converting toku with missionaries the problem is getting him to open borders

... I believe we are facing Darius I, not Cyrus?

... I believe we are facing Darius I, not Cyrus?

You are correct. Not onl;y did I make a mistake, I convinced others of that mistake:D Am I ready to deal with Tokugawa or what!

Recap of segment 2 is coming, either late or early depending on your point of view.

FDR's Dream: Part II

Another pretty long segment here, as we essentially REXed, wondered, and built infrastructure. We essentially ignored Darius although we did make a late tech trade with him. No Toku yet, but...

First, GPs

FDRB0000.jpg

We settled him. Infact we also settled another GM this segment as well as a Prophet. we also got a Great Scientist for an academy in Washington. I plan to run a wonderspamming/settled GP farm out of Washington, just as our Bismark game and classic OBSOLETE.

Another point is based on eps, Darius is in contact with someone else. Since we have not met that AI all segment, I am convinced it's gotta be Toku.

Techpath went: MAth/IW/Aesthetics/poly/lit/currency/CoL/calender/machinery/compass/optics and saved before we built any caravels for exploration.

After IW

FDRB0001.jpg

we also popped one source in NY, plus have another on the eastern part of our island. No shortage here.

We then settled agressively, taking a decent if not spectacular city on Darius's island.

FDRB0002.jpg

With no open borders this essentially blocks Darius from alot of islands that we also settled, if a bit slower than the Cathy game (REXing is not exactly FDR's game, he's more of a classic wonderspammer).

The next wonder, and one of the biggest for wonderspamming

FDRB0003.jpg

We revolt to slavery and representation.

We start settling the eastern part of our island

FDRB0004.jpg

Claiming the marble and extra iron with a city

FDRB0004.jpg

Marble city is not great but with cheap lighthouses we got a decent fishing village there, and good production.

We also make good use of the whip for monuments, cheap lighthouses and will eventuanlly get courthouses.

Another wonder, for future health and population now, plus the GE points.

FDRB0005.jpg

And fairly quickly.

FDRB0006.jpg

With all that seafood and a quick NE we have a great GP famr in the capital!

One weak part of our game as alot of my early FDR games are, is lack of military. we relied only on axemen, but now starting to pump out crossbows from one city.

A few more cities on the east

FDRB0007.jpg

I see at least 4 more cities coming fairly soon. Note we are trying for the horses, we shall see if we can nab them. It will be hard without openborders to Darius because of the difficulty roading it.

Darius finally techs alphabet

FDRB0008.jpg

A little generous, but that's OK.

Once we teched optics and got the 1 space visibility we met.

FDRB0009.jpg

And his location is

FDRB0010.jpg

Meaning he's not who Darius is in contact with.

And a final view of those eastern islands.
FDRB0011.jpg

Yes we have much more to settle. A wonderspamming capital is limiting out production somewhat, so we nneed to be patient expanding.

Techs

FDRB0012.jpg

OK, competing with Hannibal, out-teching Darius, all with closed borders. Not bad

OK, I say we caravel away and find Toku. We also gotta find those religious leaders.

:mad:Mad, I just don't know how you do it, EVERY time I shadow your 'challanges' I get a completely different world/result.

Needless to say, its different
Spoiler :

Yeah yeah spoiler, 1st thing is I lost Oracle in 1680 BC and I was 1/2 way there, I even settled the marble as my 1st city, to speed it up.

I actually got the Great Lighthouse and the ToA's..the Collossus...well that went the way of the oracle I'd say.

Looked to the Hanging gardens, tech it in 690 BC and its gone next turn. Ok, I tech to Lit, and Great Libairy is GONE NEXT TURN..

Spoiler :
WONDERLOVINGAIs0000.jpg

AND i ACTUALLY BUILT STONEHENGE...after both Buddism and Hinduism were gone by 3600 BC AND i built it in 2200 bc?? WTH?? I was just going for the cash...

I've teched on, Darius DOESN'T HAVE alpha bet, and neither does Hannibal.

I've teched Currency, doing alpha and then beeline optics.

I'm going to try the Great Scientist bulbing of Astronomy AGAIN. But really don't hold out great hope.

Rexed the Island, and one off shore to the west. Looking to rex eastwards on the islands now...maybe buddy up to darious.
Spoiler :
East0000.jpg

I SWEAR, and I really have...it seems like there's 3 industrious civ's all being financial...

Now I was disheartened, and did lose focus...got enter fever...but holly crap...you'd think I'd get to at least wonderspam with STONE AND MARBLE.

Oh yeah, Missed the MoM as well...more F'n cash...3 profits all settled in Washington.
Spoiler :
West0000.jpg

I don't want to kill Darious, but he's got gold..Oh yeah, missed the Sherwan pagoda as well....more F'n cash....ARRGGHHH I WANTED FREE RELIGION.

All Asthetics wonders went in period 200-250 ad..Holy crap..

I actually built the PYRAMIDS....YEAH ME :goodjob: I thought, "this will just be for cash as well"..but no 580 BC....too slow on Libairies...it's going to cost me...

Kudo's to your play, if you get all the wonders....I'm going to scream "CHEATER" to MYSELF...BAH...I should really be able to leverage this leader...maybe it was just bad luck/random numbers/builds..

Enough said, onwards with the challange, I really enjoy reading these, and shadowing when time allows

 THAT'S IT...............AAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH

I don't B E L I V E I T WTH???

Spoiler :
mY AI idiots are all running 500 yr's in advance of yours, and they don't have ALPHABET.....

Granted, I'm behind tech wise slightly.... only starting forges in 420 ad...My error....but LOSING ALL THOSE WONDERS......

I just may raise NEW YORK, just for the satisfaction.

Not bad... those island cities are helping ;)

Some things:
Note we are trying for the horses, we shall see if we can nab them. It will be hard without openborders to Darius because of the difficulty roading it.
When Atlanta gets it's next border pop, make a fort in the hill E of the horses ( suposedely already pastured and roaded ) and road it. No need to OB with Darius :p

Other thing: you have all the interest in the world in OBing with Hannibal. Make a city in the W tip of your islan ( 2 SW of the cooper ) and when the border pops you'll have access to the island from where Han comes :p

Very good suggestions. I never though of the fort and building a road to the horses, nice!

I will hold off on Hannibal a bit longer, just to make sure Toku is not east of Dariur and west of hannibal, communicating with both. All the forign commerce means nothing here is we meet a Toku that's already ticked at us.

FDR's Dream: Part III

And what a dream game it is!

Rolling along at an amazing pace, and I find this game actually quite easy. One of the easier RPCs, but perhaps I should not speak so soon.

Techpath: CS/paper/education/Philosophy/liberalism/guilds/banking/ginpowder/military tradition/chemistry/ start printing press and save.

We start by finishing

FDRC0000.jpg

In Washington. Better make sure we get the Taj. Washingtin is an amazing GP farm right now, and every GP has been settled in the capital with the exception of the first GS which built an academy.

We start exploring the great oceans and meet

FDRC0001.jpg

Buddhist leader, OK for now.

And

FDRC0002.jpg

The man of the hour! we traded him some weak tech for some cash getting him immediately to pleased and setting up

FDRC0003.jpg

So much for having trouble getting Toku to open borders! took 1 turn!

I feel a little safer with Darius as Toku is on the other side of the world and they have not met.

Then we meet the Bald one

FDRC0005.jpg

And the Hindu leader.

FDRC0006.jpg

And here you can see Sharing Buddhism does not those two, plus everyone is essentially isolated.

FDRC0007.jpg

OK, here is a view of Toku's lands

FDRC0008.jpg

Lot's of close borders with Isabella to strain relations, good!

And even at pleased we can get some techs out of Toku

FDRC0009.jpg

And Darius is turning into a decent friend right now.

FDRC0010.jpg

We get to liberalism first

FDRC0011.jpg

We opt for nationalism for first crack at the Taj.

Toke also requested paper which we gave him.

We adjusted civics

FDRC0013.jpg

Darius also built the Schwan Papa (whatever it's called) so he is in his favroite civic FR. Getting really nice relation with him, let's hope toku likes him too. Also adopted Mercantilism as per RPC rules.

We then proceeded to trade guilds to toku for 70 gold and then gift banking. All an attempt to get Toku to friendly by adopting his favorite civic. Took a little persuasion.

FDRC0017.jpg

We also got the random event giving us +3 health and a free scientist!

We then called up Isabella.

FDRC0018.jpg

All to get Toku friendly, which he is still NOT, yet.

We then build the Taj, getting a 24 turn golden Age.

Then finally

FDRC0020.jpg

Toku's at friendly which allows us to backfill techs with education (we already got to liberlaism and economics first).

At the end of the GA we built

FDRC0021.jpg

Great, extra happiness!

We saved here

Diplomacy

FDRC0022.jpg

Everyone met each other, Toke and Issy are still at it, therefore we are still at it with Issy.

I should thank Rolo for that horse trick. we pastuered the horses, built a fort next to them and then a road. Yep, instant horse access!.

Techs

FDRC0023.jpg

Blowing the crown away. Only concern is that Churchhill and Hannibal can tech Astronomy, I certainly do NOT want to see any foreign troops right now.

And our cities

FDRC0024.jpg

Our wonderspamming capital

FDRC0025.jpg

But here is a question, what second national wonder (we have the NE here)? I am thinking NP again for a massive GP farm however, it is clearly the best science center and OXford makes sense. Still, beakers are not exactly a problem here.

Oh, sorry no maps but we essentially built cities on all our islands. No production (slavery rules here) but lot's of food and commerce.

Power shows we are doing well

FDRC0026.jpg

OK, here's what I am thinking

1) Techpath: PP/SM/communism. We use the GSpy for another 24 turn golden age. Once we get communism we probably can get Toku into a Permanent Alliance if we are still mutually at war with Issablla. Otherwise we shall get a defensive pact.

2) DArius. Friendly and I think a very solid Allie. Once we get a Permanent Alliance with Toku, we can definitely nurture that friendship.

3) Isabella needs to die eventually, yeah we know.

4) Brennus, Churchill, and Hannibal. What do we do with them, and that likely determines tihe victory conditions. If we can stay peaceful then I say space or UN, otherwise we ar elooking at domination.

So what do you all think, pretty easy huh!

Once you get the PA, there is no need to further suck up to him. I say let him do his thing. Hannibal is an issue. Prepare to invade him BEFORE he invades you

I'd build Oxford in the wonder-spamming capital. Although the synergy of the NE is great, late game GPs aren't as important as getting Oxford in and enhancing 263 beakers it's already producing.

I wanna attack someone :(

FDR's Dream: Part IV

The dream arrangement has occurred, and just a matter of how to bring this baby home.

Tecpath went: Scientific Method/Communism/astronomy/constitution/replaceable parts/rifling/democracy/physics/Steam Power

After SM we find

FDRD0000.jpg

Oil, but in lousy locations. We ended up getting continental source eventually by a border pop.

And we get one of teh key techs here

FDRD0001.jpg

Which led to

FDRD0002.jpg

Mission accomplished, time to bring this game home.

We asked for enough gold to push the slider up to 90%.

FDRD0003.jpg

We could have literally asked for 100 but we still want Toku to afford a VERY sizeable army.

This also led to

FDRD0004.jpg

and finally

FDRD0005.jpg

The free Great Spy which we use for a 24 turn Golden Age followed almost immediately by

FDRD0006.jpg

Random event,
get 8 muskets and they can either be promoted to pinch or start a Musket Golden Age! We took the golden Age which stacks with the current one causing 44 turns of a GA. We also popped a Great Artists which we saved as the next GP is due before the end of the GA, so we started yet another one.

If you lost count, by the save we got

24 turn GA from the Taj

24 turn GA from the free GSpy

24 turn GA froim the musket random event

24 turm GA from the next 2 GPs

Total of 96 GA turns!!!!

OH, and Hannibal who has astronomy decided we were too tough to attack and went after Darius instead.

FDRD0007.jpg

During the last GA we teched democracy and we adjusted our civics for the final time.

FDRD0009.jpg

One question, We cannot build the SoL, I am guessing that's because Toku is currently building it?

We did get this wonder

FDRD0010.jpg

We saved after Steam Power, a little undecided whether to pursue a space race path (How does this work with Toku, do we mutually build parts???) or an agressive path and just destroy who is in our way.

Power numbers

FDRD0011.jpg

We like our new Ally!

Techs, just nuts!

And finally our world shot!

FDRD0013.jpg

OK, I am considering this possibility.

Declare war on teh entire world (except Darius, we like Darius) and see if we can get a domination win WITHOUT ever fighting a battle!!!! Providing we keep all units for defensive work, I am pretty sure we get no war weariness!

What do you say, a peaceful domination win!!! Sick em' Toku!

I swear.. and I certainly have, that I've got a DIFFERENT save for the start to your game.

Your making a mockery of the ease of this game.

Now you have TOKIE as your attack dog, you should unleash him, and go for domination. But as we know, the AI sucks at warfare, he'll declare, take a few cities, make peace etc etc.

Space seems the quickest way to win, or Diplomatic win, with Tokie and Darious you should have the numbers for a diplomatic victory.

But with a permament alliance, is this victory enabled, and if so, who would win.

Wouldn't you end up with Tokie as your opponent, in having the most land, and you build the U.N. which would destroy your Permanent alliance (if it can be broken), or would the 2/3 rd greatest land mass then become your opponent?

I still haven't advance my shadow game from 420 ad. I'll do so, just to see how different a world I end up with. Tokie at freindly, no Nukes, and smoke some more Po..errr.... sleep to gather further dreams..

Regarding the UN diplo win, based on the Washington game essentially we are a team. There is no more Tokugawa and Roosevelt, there is Tokuvelt or Roosegawa depending on your preference. we have 25% of the population, Darius has less than 14% and is close to Hannibal. In fact I did not go the electricity route since Darius looked to be our competitor, at least before the Cartheginian/Persian war.

So I am thinking of declaring war and let Toku go enjoy himself while I tech him to tanks and try to build the spaceship myself. I went to all this effort to befriend him, the least I can do is let him take those CG I, Combat I, Drill I infantry and recklessly slaughter the rest of the world. Hey, that's what friends are for!

If you have a PA and don't want your teammate to build a wonder, the turn before the enabling tech is complete, ask him/her to research another tech. This gives you a one turn opportunity to sart it. You just need it in your building Queue to reserve it.
The same applies for techs rewarding you with a free tech or a free GP. just be sure you're the only one on your team currently researching that tech.

Well, the answer is yes and no.

Spoiler :

I'm a long-time lurker but infrequent poster. I normally play on Prince but was so intrigued by this game's premise that I decided to give a shadow game a whirl. It was a lot of fun, except....

My strategy was to go for an rapid tech start via a TRE, get early Astronomy from Liberalism, then conquer as much of the world as possible before Toku even met the other ivs. Once I met Toku, I would give him a tech, open borders, adopt his religion and favorite civic (mandatory per the rules anyway), find a common war to fight (with Toku that's never a problem), then tech to Communism, get the PA and immediately win the game via domination with our combined pop/land.

So what went wrong? Virtually nothing. Got all the right early wonders. Blew away Darius before any other civs ever new he existed. Same for Hannibal. When I finally met Toku, he was already at war with Churchill so I joined the fray, on paper at least. In the meantime, I knocked off Brennus, whom Toku hadn't met yet. My the time that war was done, Toku had been "Friendly" for dozens of turns and once his land/population joined mine via the PA, we would win.

Except.... When I teched to Commyism, he would not agree to a PA, despite having been Friendly for literally dozens of turns and staying that way the entire rest of the game! The pop-up text said "You have become too powerful for us."!!!! What? He would sign a DP, no problem. But would never sign a PA. I stopped teching, gave him all my techs, gifted him my entire offensive force, and, according to the Power graph, was now well below his power rating. I tried for another 30 turns, to see if time mattered. No PA. He stayed "Friendly" - thank goodness, now that he had tech parity and a heavily promoted offensive naval and land force, and I had none! My score was still much higher his - so maybe that was the problem. I even tried to liberate all my conquered holdings - creating 4 new colonies in the process, to the point I only had my orinal 4 cities on the starting landmass, but still no go.

Eventually I got bored and killed off Isabella, securing the Domination "win" but still not a PA. So it was a pyrrhic victory at best.

Has anyone seen the "too powerful" issue before? What could I have done to overcome it - other than not conquering everyone else first? ;)

"too powerful" is based on power ratings
if YOU are top in power, the AI will not sign a PA with you
if THE AI is top in power, they will not sign a PA with you

so someone has to be more powerful than either of you

You can lower your power rating by disbanding units... you can't lower your friends power rating... but you could raise up a rival's power rating by gifting them units. (hopefully a rival that likes both you and your friend)

It's to keep the PA as sort of a balancing...#2+#3 can pair up but the 'big dog' goes it alone. (of course once #2+#3 pair up, the big dog isn't the biggest anymore)
