Roman consul as leader

I suspect there will be no Byzantium, and Rome's second leader will be Constantine ruling from Constantinople (given the different capital thing)....but I'd love to see a proper Republican Consul! We've never had one - Even though Julius Caesar held the office; he shouldn't be associated with it as much as with being the first dictator for life, who ended the Republic.

I suspect nzcamel may be right about Byzantium, although I think it would be a disservice to the medieval Byzantines. Bring on Alexios Konnenos, with Cataphracts and Dromons.

Elsewhere I've proposed Marcus Tullius Cicero as Rome's second leader.

That's actually not a bad idea. At this point adding a Byzantine Civ might seem to be overdoing it (as it could either be seen to be a second Roman Civ or a third Greek Civ), when we already Greece, the Greek Kingdom of Macedon, and Rome, but that idea would get around that.

Constantinople isn't on Rome's City-list in Civ 6 though..

While I can see the arguments for Cicero, him being one of the greatest orators in history and everything, I don't really like him, because he always ended up being "the most important supporter of" and on top of that nearly always chose the side that ended up losing, up to the point (when he chose Octavian over Anthony) where it cost him his life.

My personal proposal for a Roman consul is Brutus, the first consul of the republic, or maybe one of the consuls during the Punnic Wars.

Well, ending up "the most important supporter of" is part of the gig in politics; especially of the Roman sort where you -mostly- couldn't hold the top job for longer than a year. Can't say Cicero didn't make his own mark when he was top dog. Definitely his own man.

Lucius Brutus or Cincinnatus.

Just imagine Brutus acting like he is dumb but being a sneaky git or Cincinnatus's leader screen when he is in his farming clothes.

What about a dual leader. Normally, you have a certain leader (some consul during that time), but if you are declared war upon, Cincinnatus takes over.

Consulships were always a two man arrangement. It'd be interesting to have to deal with consul A one turn, and consul B the next! With subtly different agendas...
Of course how that could be reflected in a meaningful yet not frustrating way, when you were playing as that pair is hard to say.

I thought Caligula didn't actually manage to make it consul...

Well current thought today is that the Byzantium empire counts as the Roman empire. Seeing how they called themselves the Roman empire and literally had an unbroken chain of rule and several times tried to re-capture Rome.

Phonecia/Carthage is one that is missing so is their extremely violent religion of the worship of Moloch. They are great bad guys for civ.
