This is my idea for the route to take, it concentrates on maximum coverage of nearby land rather than rocketing off to the north looking for them.

1st Red Route - Diplomat route to Dellham

2nd Red Route - Diplomat escorted by Chariot

    Blue Route - Legion

Yellow Border - Area that will be revealed

    Numbers - Turn number

Turn 5 and 6: I don't think they have settled on the hills in the interior of our continent, it doesn't seem very AIy. :) Maybe you have some point I have missed? Other than that it seems like a good plan:goodjob:

Wouldn't it be better for the diplo with or without the chariot to explore the north quickly whilst the legion does more of the central exploration?

Looking at Jayne's map in Turn 525BC, the Vikings disappeared into the Hills just North of Iron Mountain. I've also been wondering, maybe the Legion and Dip make a good team, the Legion can guard the Dip, with Chariot nearby solo and pray! Not sure...   Sure about one thing. Phx to Fortify and Home in new Iron City, serfs on Whale.   And, "No More Phalanx - We Need Archers"

One thing to look out for, I think the horse could sneak in between Dellham and Iron city once the dip et.al. have moved North. If we don't spot the horsemen with our expeditionary force, we'll have to keep a look out for him possibly within our borders (I'll admit not likely, but possible).

It's possible for that city to be near the settler and phalanx. Why do we not look there?

Thanks for posting proposed routes, Mordhiem.

IMHO,the most likely place to find the Viking city is somewhere along the North Shore. It's close to their continent and is their likely landing spot. There is plenty of good land so a settler probably wouldn't wander around much. They have probably settled near the 2 whales and missed the 4 special spot.

About the routes: Should the legion wait until turn 3 to start? He's the slow one (and powerful), we could give him a head start. Also, since the Vikings may be way out on the peninsula, perhaps it would make sense to march straight up (in line with 3,4,5)? The sooner he arrives the better, no?. The faster units could zigzag to get good coverage and still meet him at the coast. If the Vikings are found during the zagging, the Legion is still close by.

The map looks good and covers the area very well, joining the two forces together to explore the peninsula.

No. It's not possible for the city to be there as of yet. The Settler is nearer Castle Jayne than any other city. This means the nearest the city could be is the desert beyond the hills. The phalanx in nearer dellham than any other city, so I think this pushes the border out even further. I think if the is a town it's on the peninsula. If we find anything in the exploratory zone, it may be a settler, or towns yet to be founded.

As we search northward, should we found cities as we go along? This will allow this land to be claimed as ours.

Edit: I'm not sure if this is technically possible, but as a concept I'm seeing if it flies in the wind :)

We don't have the settlers yet, but we could certainly consider leaving units posted up there to attempt to prevent Vikings (or anyone else for that matter!) building cities where we don't want them to.

We definitely ought to have cities to the north of the land we have already claimed, but I doubt that we have the settlers to be able to do it straightaway.
Furthermore, I agree with MonkE that the legion should bee-line toward to the peninsula and run any of those stinky Vikings off our territory as soon as poossible! :goodjob: There isn't too mcuh point in faffing about with searches in wonky lines for the time being when we could be fighting and using the chariot to mop up after us later on!

By the information Jayne gave us we can conclude that if the Vikings have founded a city on our continent than it must be on the peninsula. So I'd say take the legion, chariot and diplomat up north to the peninsula, don't waste any time on chasing that horseman, it's only one unit...
If it's supported by a city we are going to find up there we kill that horseman anyway by destroying the city!

Reading the several recent posts, I tend to agree their city is not likely South of the Iron (and COAL) Hills.

StevieP, you will be delighted to learn a Settler from TFalls is nearby, now in Gabba Gabba and about to Road the Silk. The people want it to then move NW and Road the Pure Green, completing the Highway from Regia Civitas to Elysium. After the Dedication Ceremony, it's available to found a city.

And in case you don't read French:

There are several units in Elysium. One idea it to send the weak Warrior as a happiness guard to Gabba Gabba, where it can help GG to build a Caravan. (That idea is presently supported by the poll, but a War Plan could take priority, seems to me). Another idea is to keep the Legion in Elysium, to guard against another potential AI invasion.

A third idea is to send the Legion North to hunt and destroy the Vikings. This would be in addition to the the Legion being discussed, presently in Dellham.

This is a crucial question that has not been addressed.

The legion in Elysium is several turns behind the other units, so it is likely that it won't have a tactical use dealing with an existing Viking city. But in dealing with the Vikings, it may be strategically desirable to relocate it to the North. Taking their city will surely start a war and they will return.

The Indians are a wild card. They usually aren't expansionist, but if they do find us they will almost certainly make peace if they find us sufficiently well defended. If they are most likely to appear in the west, phalanxes (phalanges?) are probably sufficient defense.

    What units are in Elysium?
I don't want our SSC to be defended just by defensive units, when barbs show up I like there to be a legion to kill them right away before they can throw an attack at us!

So when the legion is the only offensive unit, keep it in Elysium.

Good point. Perhaps it's simpler to build archers farther north.

Another point: If we will be building many units, should we consider a barracks? There is an economic analysis somewhere that shows a barracks pays for itself (assuming veterans are worth 50% more) if 2 or more units are produced out of a city.

Well, I've looked at the route again and taken into account all the other views of people on the thread and I think that the route still fulfiles what we need it to do. That is scour the land where it is most likley that a city has been settled and if possible find some enemy units to bribe.

But overall, do we want to use this when Jayne plays later this evening?
