Hi everyone,

the RWC starts today and no thread about it?

well, i guess all rugby fans will be with me in the Stade de France tonight...

Go Les Bleus Go!!!

It's only possible to get games on one channel here, and that's on replay. :(

Went to see the match on a giant screen at the old Stade Yves du Manoir in my hometown Colombes, which once was the French stadium for international events (before 1971), including some World Cup and Olympics. :)

About the match. D.A.M.N.I.T. :(

Go the Pumas. They played a blinder and fully deserved the win. That's a pretty tough pool, with Ireland still to join the mix.

Next up is the All Blacks v Italy. I can't believe that New Zealand have somehow managed to injure three players before the game starts! What luck. Two locks out, plus two more locks injured back in NZ. So that's 4 out of the top 6 locks all injured.

Sione Lauaki is now the number 3 lock? What a nightmare!

Great job the pumas, i am sure the all blacks are scared of France now.

First ab match tonight against italy, i hope they get a nice big score 50+.
Also cant wait to see how much aussie gets against australia.

blah!!!

Puma are really France's nemesis!!!

I know that France did make a lot of error and i think it's better seen on TV, but from the stadium, the referee seemed to be in favor of the pumas...hence the almost constant whistleing from the public
For those who had seen it on TV, was it as obvious as it was for the public?

Huh?

I wouldn't be blaming the referee. Argentina played more consistently and smartly through the whole game. This really isn't the huge upset that everybody is making out. Argentina have been playing good rugby over the last 5 or so years (they're almost unbeatable at home), and France is like a home venue for many of them. Compare that to France, who have been the epitome of inconsistency in recent times.

If Argentina got the same sort of international exposure that the Tri-Nations and Six Nations teams do, they'd be a real force.

I have followed rugby for many, many years and unlike football, I watch the sport almost always as a neutral. I did not think the referee was unfairly biased to Argentina. He penalised both sides for holding on to the ball and diving in, and in my opinion he was not in any way the cause of France's loss.

I am not neutral when England play.

Holy smokes.

38 - 0 after 18 minutes! Italy haven't even turned up to this game so far. I've never seen anything like it before.

I would be surprised if the aussies don't run up a high score against Japan. England... :hmm: their backs aren't as good and they don't quite have the ruthlessness that they used to. They probably don't have it in for the USA as much as they did for Wales. That said, I hope they make it a very uncomfortable day for the USA.

A fairly workman like victory for the ABs. Quite why the ref needed to go to the TMO to rule out that Italy try at the end is a mystery.

All Blacks 76 Italy 14.

Well, that was a bit of a massacre. Not sure whether that tells us anything or not, but it was good to see the All Blacks play with a bit more precision than they have in some of their other games this year. I didn't notice any obvious injuries either, which is a relief for now.

Wow, that was supposed to be an *almost* tight game but it was a massacre. Go the AB's!

No, I didn't notice that. In any case, it can't be the reason France lost. That's really bad, because France has much more potential than Argentina, but yesterday the Pumas did everything they knew they can do well, while we... missed everything... Just an incredible waste. One highlight last night : when France spent a good amount of time trying to score through a massive attack, wave after wave, just centimeters before the line (45' or so) ; we were cheering like in a boxing match, and then they just... completely screwed the opportunity which would have allowed us to kill the match.

The All Blacks ? I just had to laugh in the 1st half. Couldn't believe what I saw. But kudos to the Italians for scoring twice, and almost a 3rd time. That showed us what we all know : the Blacks can be beaten. They're almost unstoppable on the offense, but when they miss a ball, they can suddenly be in a very bad position. IMHO they're the only favourite of the competition, but they could get trapped like in 1999 against France. :D Well, we learned nothing new today.

And I really liked the Italian team, which was able to counter the Blacks at the end of the match. In fact, I prefer Italy over Argentina. The Pumas played an outrageous stereotyped game that any serious, classical team should handle. Italy looks more promising in the long term (years).

Wow this has been the first time that I saw a rugby match (the whole game yesterday and 30 mins of NZ kicking the Italians ass today) and I must say I'm really impressed - what a great sport!

The static situations get somewhat repetitive, but once the players start running its very spectacular. It's cool that a the free german tv-channel is showing the matches, I will definately watch some more of them..

Keep watching, Riffraff! As with most sports, the more you watch and learn, the better it gets.

The "static situations" or set pieces, like scrums and lineouts, are often where the game is won or lost, as dominance in those areas allows the backs the space to run (the part of the game you enjoyed).
