Russia Decides Not To Ratify Kyoto

Russia is not the Netherlands. Global warming will actually benefit them.

I suggest we just keep on living in the moment, as we already do. We might perhaps pray for some divine intervention. And hope that we'll die of age before the ocean rises above our houses.

Screw Kyoto, it was designed to screw the U.S and Russia. There is no possibility of either nation complying with the treaty. You might as well make a treaty that says the U.S and Russia should just die and go to hell.

Wow, Putins a ******. They were already in compliance because their economy contracted so much after the fall of the Soviet Union. Signing would have cost them nothing.

Will people criticise Russia as loudly as they criticised the US?

Um, no.

No. The U.S. walking away from it made it easier and provided cover for other large nations to walk away. If the U.S. had signed, the pressure on Russia would have been much greater and they would have signed too.

First, don't ever blame the U.S for actions of other nations. That is just inane.

Second, the U.S CANNOT possibly comply.

Our laws. Who is gonna pay for it?

As far as I know Russia is already emiting less than in 1990, and even in the best case for its industry it will not reach the limit by 2010. So they would be able to sell their quota and get a benefit. The reason why they don't sign is unknown.

Conspiracy theories aside, I think that Russia has other motives up its sleeves. If I recall correctly Russia has to do virtually nothing to meet these goals, due to the drastic reduction of emissions due to the fall of the Soviet Union. Not to mention the vast wealth they could gain by selling their emission credits to countries that are too lazy to actually reduce their emissions (Canada)

And if Russia stayed in (with no drawbacks for themselvese...WHAT ARE THEY DOING???), it would put more pressure on the Americans to rejoin eventually.

Maybe they just don't want to tie themselves up with a treaty. Russia is not going to forever be in such a horrible state of economy. It will again boom.

@Dumb:

The laws that govern how money is raised for federal spending. If we agree to this, we have to do it, and we have to raise taxes. That is NOT going to happen; And the Federal Government is NOT about to force the burden on the private sector.

Thats true too. What other motives do you think Russia has for this? I cant think of anything logical, other than winning points with Washington, but a vague thing like that doesnt sound like much of a deal for them.

Perhaps Putin is saying to the world: "You can't tell us what to do because we're huge and we've got nukes!"

Russia doesn't want to win pts. with DC. They dont want to tie themselves up with treaties that will prevent growth in the future. Their primary source of energy is going to fossil fuels for a long time. They have vast resources in the country. They will develop those resources and their economy will eventually boom again.

This treaty, in so many ways, is designed to hurt the U.S and Russia.
