And 3 Czech players, all World Championships gold medal winners :( Plus one of the most famous Slovak hockey players.

    Frak.

It reminds me of the time the Marshall football team and the US Olympics figure skating team met similar fates.

Yeah, its a terrible shame, and not just because they are hockey players obviously.

Out of curiosity, what happens to that squad? Is there a draft where they can field replacement players, or will they forfeit the entire season?

So far it seems that the whole A team was on the plane, so the club is out, for all intents and purposes.

So what happens to the other KHL teams when this one shows up on the schedule? Do they have a B team they can promote? Can they sign some free agents?

Of course they have a junior team, but all their best players, all their stars are probably dead. This is... terrible.

It will also harm national teams of the countries whose players were on board. Ours especially, since the three were among the most important players

Were the hockey players political dissidents?

It's a shame these accidents are common in Russia; hopefully the industry does get overhauled.

Two former Canucks died this off-season: Demitra and Rick Rypien. This is all kinds of sad.

Why do you have to be overbearingly offensive by trying to paint this accident as some kind of politically intrigue for your own ends?

And since I'm sure you didn't read the OP before spouting off your complete nonsense, the players were from Czechia, Slovakia, and Germany amongst others, so what exactly were they dissenting against?

There was a period in the 70s/early 80s where 4 flights crashed due to preventable ATC errors. And a similar group of errors in the 60s / early 70s caused 4 planes to crash in the US and Puerto Rico. But other than that, I see no pattern that would suggest "these accidents are common in Russia". Do you?

It's definitely been a rough off-season for hockey - Derek Boogard, Rick Rypien, Wade Belak, and now this crash.

    :(

The guy who scored 8 seconds before the end of the final period and thus kept the CZE team in the game (CZE-SWE semifinals, 2010 WCH in Germany), is among the dead.

    :shake: Why, damn it?

Sorry, I didn't realize I had to attach a smiley to every sarcastic comment made on the internet because, you know, my serious comment was the one I wrote after the facetious one.

You can sit back down now.

Oh, I'm no expert, so I have no idea about the industry. I just thought Medvedev's comments meant that there was a problem in the industry, and that the two crashes weren't coincidental freak-of-nature accidents. "President Dmitry Medvedev has promised to overhaul the industry and take out of service ageing jets from the Soviet era." Like I said, though, I don't know the whole situation.

Unfortunately, many countries allow aging jets from even the 60s to continue to fly including the US. But this is particularly a serious problem in developing countries. But I don't notice even a single fatal crash which was blamed on the age of the airframe, although it may have caused some of the pressurization failures. But those have been rather rare. High maintenance cost is what usually removes these planes from service.

Are there any plans for ceremonies honoring those who perished?
