EDIT: Topic changed to palettes, therefore I changed the name of the thread from "Russian Translation Help Needed Please" to "Palette Translation Help Please".

I'm also working on the French at the moment but I would also greatly appreciate it if I could get Russian translations of the following for World War II Soviet Units:

Fighter Group
Naval Fighter Group
Bomber Group
Heavy Bomber Group
Fighter Bomber Group
Dive Bomber Group
Transport Group

Tank Corps
Infantry Corps
Marine Division
Guards Infantry Corps
Guards Tank Corps
Paratrooper Corps
Alpine/Mountain Corps
Militia Division
Mechanized Infantry Corps
Field Gun Regiment
Artillery Regiment
Heavy Artillery Regiment
Siege Gun Regiment
Self Propelled Artillery Regiment
Anti-Aircraft Regiment
Self Propelled Anti-Aircraft Regiment
Self Propelled Anti-Tank Regiment
Recon Regiment

Many thanks for any help. :)

Alternatively, does anyone know of any sites on the web which would give the information above? I would love to get them in actual Russian characters as well to put in the World At War mod. :)

EDIT: Woops, just found out that the Civ Editor doesn't support Russian letters.

Google English-Russian translators (the online interactive type).
That's how I get civ-specific unit and tech names for my Euro mod. Unfortunately, I haven't tackled the Russians yet...

I've tried that and so far haven't come up with a satisfactory one. But I'll keep trying. I found an EXCELLENT site for German translations, it translates phrases and gives closest matches. Very good site:

http://www.dict.cc

I could have given you the German translations... I happen to be fluent in German thanks to having lived there for a while.

From my experience in using Russian names for my mod, I can tell you they have the irritating habit to be even longer than the French ones...

So you'll get even more problems, and need abreviation.

If I can't find any translators then I may have to just put english names in their place. So far, for instance, I just have "Tank Corps (RKKA 45)" and Fighter Group (VVS 45) for a naming convention. :(

From my own Russian unit list
http://stephane.f.david.free.fr/CivMod/Russia_UnitList.htm

Marines = Morskaya Pehota
Paratrooper = Vozdushno-Desantnye Voyska
Self Propelled artillery = Istrebitelnaja Samokhodnaya Ustanovka
Anto aircraft artillery = Protivovozdushnaya Oboronnaya Ustanovka
Selft Propelled AA = Zenitnaya Samokhodnaya Ustanovka

However, this doesn't include the size of the unit (corps, division, etc).

that Russian dictionary is awesome! (Of course you have to be able to read cyrillic) ;)

I can translate them into Russian, but not into "English Russian"

for example:
Fighter Group - группа самолета
Naval Fighter Group - Группа самолета военно-морского флота
Bomber Group - Группа бомбометания самолета
Armoured Brigade - танковая бригада

but Steph is right...you WILL need abbreviations...

the "English" Russian word for "Squadron" is Eskadrilya
Naval Aviation - Aviatsiya Voenno Morskogo Flota
Russian Air Force - Voyenno-vozdushnye sily Rossii
Soviet Air Force(Note this is the one you prolly want...not Russian air force, this is the WW2 designation) - Voyenno-Vozdushnye Sily
Maritime Military Fleet - Voyenno- Morskoy Flot
Assault - Shturmovik (added at the begining of "elite" or Advanced squads as in Shturmovik Eskadrilya)
Air Army - Vozdushnaya Armiya

Thanks Spacer One. That is a very good Web site which you cited.

Does anyone know of any dictionaries on the Web which translate English into "English-Russian" or for that matter does anyone know what the formal name for "English-Russian" is. Perhaps I could google that name and see if there is a dictionary out there that will do this function. :)

The main problem of translation from russian into english is that the russian words and phrases are very long in comparison to english ones. That`s why I play ONLY ENGLISH version of Civ III.

Naval Fighter Group - Gruppa voenno-morskih istrebiteley

Wow! Many thanks Sandris!!!!!! :worship:

Would it be possible to abbreviate some of them so that they will fit within 26 characters or less?

For instance, in English we use Bde. to abbreviate Brigade and Div. to abbreviate Division, etc.

I was getting ready to pay for them to be translated. It probably would have cost me a lot of money to do so.

In return, if you need any props for your units made, I can do some for you. I use Google Sketchup and Bryce 5.5. So if you can use props made with those programs I will be happy to make what I am able for you. :)

EDIT: I will try to abbreviate what I can above. Is it OK to use Gr. to abbreviate Gruppa and Art. to abbreviate artilleriy and artilleriysky for instance? Thank you, thank you!

Regretably, russian language hasn`t such abbreviatures. So, I`ve shorted the names without losing their meaning and military assignment.

Heavy Bomber Group - Tyazhely bombardirovschik (or tyazh. bombardirovschik)

Dive Bomber Group - Pikir. bombardirovschik
Transport Group - Transportny samolet

Tank Corps - Tank
Infantry Corps - Pekhota
Marine Division - Morskaya pekhota
Guards Infantry Corps - Gvardeyskaya pekhota
Guards Tank Corps - Gvardeysky tank
Paratrooper Corps - Parashutist
Alpine/Mountain Corps - Gorny strelok
Militia Division - Opolchenets
Mechanized Infantry Corps - Motopekhota
Field Gun Regiment - Polevaya artilleriya

Self Propelled Anti-Aircraft Regiment - Samokh. protivovozdush. ustanovka (SPVU)
Self Propelled Anti-Tank Regiment - Samokh. protivotank. polk (SPTP)
Recon Regiment - Perekhvatny polk

Wow! Many thanks Sandris!!!!!! :worship:
I told you the guy is a wonder ;)

Anyway we are back to what I told you. I don't think using the army size in the name is a good idea, you are wasting to many valuable characters.

Thanks again Sandris!!! Just PM me anytime or post in the Gary's Models Thread if there is anything I can do for you in return! :)

You and Steph will both be getting credit in the mod for your invaluable translation help.

@Steph: I'm still going to try to find a way to fit the longer names. I may have to break convention just for those units and name them a different way. But overall I just like the aesthetics of unit size in the name. To me it gives more of a feel of being an army commander or something when moving units around in battle.

EDIT: Fantastic!! I managed to fit everything using the abbreviations above. The only unit I had to get drastic with was the Self Propelled AA unit. I just used SPVU for that one. And really there were only a few which I needed to abbreviate. The rest fit fine.

Well, a French general will not bother to move for an instance a Bataillon de Chasseurs Alpins, he would simply say "Send the 27th BCA there!" ;)

You`re welcome !

Not just me, but the whole CivIII Community needs your help on making some stuff for units. :p

By the way, how firm is your relationship with unit`s animations ? ;)
