WASHINGTON (AP) — Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg had surgery Thursday after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, the court said.

...

Pancreatic cancer is one of the most deadly cancers: Nearly 38,000 cases a year are diagnosed and overall, fewer than 5 percent survive five years.

The reason: Fewer than one in 10 cases are diagnosed at an early stage — like Ginsburg's appears to be — before the cancer has begun spreading through the abdomen and beyond. That's because early pancreatic cancer produces few symptoms other than vague indigestion.

Pancreatic cancer is almost impossible to put into remission. I do hope hers was caught early. Looks like the first Supreme Court nomination might be soon. And I really liked Ginsburg :(

How old is this guy?

She's 75.

democrat or republican?

Don't know that specifically. It's a non-partisan position. She is considered to be a liberal though. So if she were to resign, Obama's replacement would keep the court 4½-4½* on ideology splits.

*4 conservatives (Alito, Roberts, Thomas, Scalia) 4 liberals (Ginsburg, Stevens, Breyer, Souter) and a swing of Kennedy

I do hope hers was caught early.

Looks like it was found pretty early:

"Justice Ginsburg had no symptoms prior to the incidental discovery of the lesion during a routine annual check-up in late January at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland," a court spokeswoman said in the news release.

A CAT scan "revealed a small tumor, approximately one centimeter across, in the center of the pancreas," the release added.

Ginsburg is a cancer survivor. She previously underwent surgery for colon cancer in September 1999, and received chemotherapy until June 2000.

Don't really know why they would...her replacement would be similar, ideologically.

I've met Justice Ginsburg a few times, and have enjoyed listening to her speak. I wish her a speedy recovery

...and Hannity-ites, Savage-ites, and Limbaugh-ites around the world rejoiced.

Why? Her replacement is going to be an Alito-aged her.

Damn. :( Pancreatic cancer's pretty much always a death sentence, and she's had cancer before? Best of luck to the old lady.

My grandpa died of pancreatic cancer. Hope she passes better than he did. :(

Hm, not too many high-profile cases of pancreatic cancer. Perhaps this will be a step in the right direction for "awareness" and prevention and treatment?
