RW1: Noble Aztec Sacrifice

1695 (0) - We look to be preparing nicely for the invasion of Japan. I'll probably keep on preparing, and might declare if I feel we're ready. Are we aiming for domination or conquest? We're nearly at the population limit for domination, but need substantially more land. If we're going for conquest, it might be a good idea to start razing some towns. When (and if) we make it to communism, state property should help a whole lot.

1700 (1) - Shuffling troops.

1705 (2) - More shuffling. A round of missionaries completes. I'll have to remember to order up some more once they finish their jobs. Our catapults have arrived in Tokyo, but need to rest 4 turns.

1710 (3) - Nothing much happens.

1715 (4) - Hanno has been born in Teotihuacan. He's a great merchant, and I have no idea what to do with him. We could either use him for a golden age, or a trade route followed by deficit research. I'll let the next leader decide.

1720 (5) - Amid all the missionaries going around, Hinduism manages to spread to Tlacopan on its own.

1725 (6) - Replaceable Parts comes in. Research is set for Education, due in 6.

1730 (7) - Our many catapults are all healed now, so let the festivities commence! (War is declared on Japan.)

1735 (8) - On Japan's turn, he attacks us with a catapult, a pike and a musket, causing us no casualties. He also parked a knight and a catapult outside of Tokyo, and they were promptly eliminated.

1740 (9) - I see no further counter attacks from Japan. We can attack Osaka next turn.

1745 (10) - One further samurai attacks us, and loses.
Now for the battle of Osaka!
I hunt down 4 accuracy promoted cats, and the town defense is no more.
We have a ton of cats sitting around, so I promote two to barrage, and suicide them.
A knight defeats a pike, but goes down to 1.6 strength.
A knight defeats a longbow, and suffers no damage.
A knight defeats a longbow, and goes down to 6.5 strength.
A knight defeats a catapult, and goes down to 8.7 strength.
A maceman defeats the final catapult (down to 7 strength), and the city is ours!
Many of our troops are wounded, so I would withdraw them to the city next turn to heal.
The borders of Kyoto don't quite stretch to the cost, so there is a road between Tokyo and Osaka available for us to use. Nice!
RW1_Japanese_Road.JPG

If it is of interest, I've been building hindu missionaries from Tenoch (generally 1 every turn). I've been sending them to either our Mongolian cities (for culture), or to Egyptian cities (for visibility). I believe that there are a couple running around right now.

Remember, we have a great merchant sitting in Teotihuacan.

Is Mike coming back now that the holidays are over, and if so, who's up next?

Domination is the prefered Victory Condition, but Conquest is acceptable.

If Mike is back, then it's his turn, but haven't heard anything from him. If he doesn't claim it by the 4th I'll take a go at it. BTW - I'm going to Vegas for a week starting on the sixth, so if I do get a go this time around, it will be my last until I get back. Will check tommorow evening to see if Mike is back.

Go around and do some MMing stuff... just to be retro I guess. All cities have Hinduism, so will be sending the missonaries to Egypt. Also notice almost all our units are tore up, so will be sending them back to neutral lands to heal a few turns.

Turn science up to 70% to to get Education in 1 turn. Also upgrade our crossbowmen to Grandiers.
Send Hanno (great Merchant) To Cuzco.
I'm looking at the game, and I feel our best battle plan is to finish Japan and then go from Kyoto SOUTH, and take out the Inca. They are more powerful then the Mali... and he'll be fighting a two front war. The only places he'll be able to take us will be Toyko, Kyoto, and Edo. Egypt blocks the rest of him. After we finish him off, it should be fairly easily to roll over the Mali... I don't think we'll even have to go to war with Egypt.

Demand 330 Gold from the Inc, and they give in. Fools. Declare war on the Inca and move on El-Amarna. This is interesting: Declared while units were sharing a tile with the Inca... After we declare, we get bumped to another tile. I wonder if he would have declared if he would have been bumped? Anyway, I take him out with a Knight after I capture the city.

We are definitely ready to take down Inca. There lots of cavalry and supporting rifles and grenadiers in the two newly captured towns. Research spending is really a waste, though we have lots of beakers available. I did take all of Mansa's cash and Economics for Muiltary Tradition so I could upgrade the knights and cats. Having done that it looks like the fastest route to DOmination is through Egypt.....Hattie holds more land than either Inca or Mali and it is nicely positioned between our forces.

If you guys wouldn't mind, I'd like to ask a few questions about our warring strategy because I tend to err pretty strongly on the side of being a builder.

The biggest thing that comes to mind is how was the decision made to declare on the Inca? I ask because it is resulting in a very long border with Egypt that Hatty could wreak havoc on by cutting roads. Was it based on the assumption that we were going to ally with Egypt vs the Mali, and therefore not need to worry about that? Regardless, we're going to have to invade one nation or the other, so how sure can you be that whoever we ultimately don't invade won't stab us in the back, anyways?

Bede said:
Research spending is really a waste, though we have lots of beakers available.
Would the plan be to devote pretty much our entire economy on upgrading troops, then? How do you decide whether or not it's safe to stop researching? I virtually always keep researching, just in case something doesn't work out. For instance, I would probably keep pushing for factories at full steam, but grenadiers, rifles, and cavalry may be cheep enough that we just don't need the extra production if that's all we're going to be building. Not having lots of money around for upgrades can (and usually does) slow my progress, but I just tend to be paranoid about the possible things that could go wrong, likely or not.

On a related note, would you advocate swapping from representation to police state? Representation gives us a little bit of research, but police state would give us a military production bonus. We're even religious in this game, too.

On a totally unrelated note, where did that "Glance" screen come from, Alerum? Is it part of a mod?

The fearless leader declared on Inca because he could and the Mali had opened the dancing. It was an opportunity to good to pass up for two reasons: 1) It improved relations with the other victims (nations) for the time being; 2) the troops were positioned after the Japanese war to do the job fairly quickly.

I would advocate to make the switch now that we control the Pyramids and don't have to research the tech. I would also vote to switch to Nationalism as well.

Despite the length of the border with Egypt I am not too much concerned as it will get shorter soonest. Hattie lacks any gunpowder units while we have cannon and cavalry and rifles and pretty good productivity for new troops. Firepower and rapid response reinforcement are major advantages which we won't enjoy against the Mali.

I would burn her cities closest to our borders and keep the ones in the east.

If we want to research anything it should be the railroads path. Most of the upgrades should be done.

Hmmm, I took a completely different tact. Our forces crushed the Mayan empire, but with a major setback. Meanwhile, I switched to (surprise) a massive Culture push to expand our borders ASAP. Details below.

User comment: We are so close & generating so much culture that just stripping away the outer ring of Hatty's cities might be enough to secure us land & victory.

And many of them are prepared to expand again in a couple turns. Not bad for a half-dozen turns, is it?

Notes:
-I've left signs where the forces are. I've positioned them so we can attack Hatty from all sides.
-Researching Corporation->Assembly Line for factories & infantry.
-I made some major changes to our civics: Caste System (unlimited artists), Free Speech (double culture), and Free Religion (even more culture from cities with multiple religions, research boost). I justify the change to Free Speech & Free Religion by noting we won't be making many more military units; we could conquer Hatty with the forces we have (we have quadruple her soldiers), therefore extra promotions for new units aren't useful.

Nice bit of culture based warfare, Mike. Just the kind of thing I tend to lose sight of in the mud and dust and the beer of war.

Looking good, Mike!

I've got it, and I'll have my turns played by Monday evening at the latest.

1842 (0) - In general, I'd say that things look pretty good. I'm going to wait a few turns for the various missionaries and troops running around to do their stuff, then I'll declare on Hatty. I decide to shut off the cultural spending for the moment to research railroads as fast as possible. Once that's done, representation and free religion will have served their purposes, so I'll revolt to police state and theocracy. As an added bonus, theocracy will also give us visibility in whatever part of Egypt remains unclaimed.

1844 (1) - We learn the corporation. Research is set to railroad, due in 4. That's a bit faster than I expected (before factoring in overflow from the corporation, it was 6!), so I think that I will wait for theocracy to begin the attack. Sorry if I'm going too slow, but I like having as good an idea of what I'm getting into as possible.

1846 (2) - Nothing much. I'm just letting troops get into place.

1848 (3) - Two turns to go...

1850 (4) - Mansa Musa's golden age ends? I hadn't noticed that he was in one.

1852 (5) - Railroad comes in, and it's time to get this party started!
As planned, I revolt to police state and theocracy. I also decided to go to nationalism, to provide a little additional security in the east. The no swapping period will be up in 5 turns, so free speech can be reinstated pretty soon.

To war! I begin by sending troops towards Byblos, Vilcas, and Pi-Ramesses. The first two will be ready to attack in 2 turns.

I also begin the railing process.

1854 (6) - Hatty moves most of her forces out of Pi-Ramesses, heading towards our territory. I was planning on hitting that city from two sides, so that's not so good a move on her part. She also sends a catapult into our territory down south. It didn't attack anything, it's just there. The combat odds readout give our cavalry a 100% chance of victory.

1856 (7) - Hatty attacks us with a single knight on her turn, and losses.

The battle of Byblos:

I promote our cannon (barrage, accuracy), and fire. The defense is down to 42%.
I promote a grenadier (pinch, cover--the defender changed between the rifle, and the longbow), and kill the longbow.
I promote another grenadier (pinch, combat 2), and it brings the rifle down to 2.2 strength before dying.
I promote a rifle (combat 2), and it kills the pike.
I promote another rifle (pinch, combat 2), and it takes the city!

The battle of Vilcas:

Four catapult bombardments, and the city defenses are gone.
I attack with a grenadier, and it kills a rifle (even if just barely--it went down to 0.6 strength).
I attack with a second grenadier, and it kills the other rifle.
The last grenadier take the city.

1858 (8) - The battle of Pi-Ramesses:

Four cannon bombardments, and the city defenses are gone.
I promote a rifle (cover, combat 2), and it kills a longbow.
I promote a cavalry (combat 1, combat 2), and it kills the other longbow.
I promote the other cavalry (combat 1, combat 2), and it takes the town.

I'm out of time to play now, so hopefully this is a decent place to pass off from.
The one major thing that needs pointing out is a stack of Egyptian units up north.

I have a question for Bede... why did we give away so many times when we're going for a domination win? I'm sure you had a sound reason behind it, but I fail to see it. I understand they were rioting, but with some artist or other specialist it should have been managable.

Mike, It's Requies Foreign Advisor MOD that has the Glance Screen.

It looks like I'm up.:) I just got done driving 10 hours so I'll tackle this on the 'morrow... looking good. Things will be wraped up quickly, inshu'allah.

@alerum, I gave two cities to Hattie (Vilcas and Alexandria) for tactical reasons. Hattie had closed her borders to the Inca, so I could safely use the towns to cover the wounded while sending the healthy forward. We could also make us of the road network to shift troops around without having to enter Inca territory until good and ready. Lastly it opened the border space in the east so that any captured Inca towns did not have to deal with Egyptian culture.

Autolog didn't work, so I'm going to have to paraphrase this. Why does it always seem to happen at the wrong time??

1858- 60.20% of the world is our. 64% for the win. Move our forces towards Hieraconpolis, Giza, Memphis, And Thebes.

1860 - Pillage Egyptian Horse Pasture. Made a slight messup with the goto feature, but it's only 1 tile.

1862 - I think it would be a good idea to automate the workers at this time. I'll set them to Automate - Build Trade Network. That should get us railroaded nicely.
Capture Hieraconpolis.

1864 - Gift Mali Corn just to help keep him happy with us. This hopefully will prevent them from declaring until we're done with Egypt.

1868 - Thebes culture is too strong. It's causing our new lands to still be inside Egypts influence. I really like this new cultural model. If I take Thebes, our land area will jump dramatically. Maybe even 3-4%.;)

1870 - Capture Memphis!!! WOOT WOOT!
Use our Great Enginger to rush Wall Street in our second richest city. This is because our richest city is already at it's 2 Nat Wonder limit... But it didn't really matter because...

1872 - We win a domination victory!

Endgame Save attached.

It's been fun guys, and we really kicked some arse:
