So with the update AI sanctions were supposed to be more common. My personal experience is it went from never happening pre patch to basically every 1-2 turns getting sanctioned. Has anyone else felt like it's overtuned now or is it just my smaller sample size and people think it's mostly fine?

Smaller sample size: If you're a warmonger, and they are swimming in influence, makes sense the AI would try to weaken you.

I've had 1 sanction in my two ages so far and I'm near the end of Exploration, only now have I become a hugely disliked leader by the AI, but so far only Ada sanctioned me druing a war.

just finished antiquity in my first 1.3.0 game. I have Trung Trac who has spammed 2 sanctions (military units and science) the whole age... without stop... No idea where she gets all the influence...maybe they don't cost enough in the end...
I was playing Tonga so discovered all AI CIVs... none of the others has issued a sanction on me. Maybe when an AI just hates you from the start it happens ? We'll need more data

After 1 game I thought it was a bit overtuned. I've now played three and I think the Civs are eager to sanction if you have a neutral or worse relationship & you're close in geographical proximity & they "think" they may be able to go to war with you. In other words, your "enemies" are more keen to sanction you; which seems realistic and a deepening of the diplomatic gameplay systems.

That makes sense... Sanctions are the ideal prelude to war because
1. it weakens the target
2. it worsens Relationships so Formal War is possible

I just finished my first 1.3.0 game on Deity (Large map with 10 players), and I got denounced three times - but no specific sanctions such as hindering military production.
I had 3-5 alliances through most of the game, and the relationships with the remaining AI were all between friendly and hostile.

Make of that what you will - but I didn't notice any change when it comes to sanctions from pre-patch games.

I haven't received a single sanction during my previous game as Ed Teach. I had good relationships with everyone.

However, in my current game as Xerxes, Lafayette is inflicting sanctions non-stop. I assume he wants to attack me at some point.

Yeah, it seems like it can be hit or miss based on replies so far. I wasn't being a warmonger, but I also did a neutral greeting to everyone to save influence for city states. Also, one of the 2 leaders sanctioning me was Napoleon so that's part of why I was getting so many I'm sure. It still feels like it can be a little to much. Just the amount of clicking I have to do extra. I think I'd like it more if they cost more and were slightly more impactful.

Come to think of it, I can't remember EVER getting a sanction from the AI other than being denounced. And I've played 1109 hours!

When this happens, does it pop up like if you're being denounced, i.e. you can accept or reject it? Or is it simply a notification that I might've missed?

It comes up so you can reject it, for an influence cost. And I hadn't ever been sanctioned either - it's just in the past couple days since the update; there was a bug preventing the AI from using them that's now been fixed.

you can reject it, but it cost a lot... from memory, in antiquity, 30 pts for them to sanction you, 60 pts for you to reject them... but I may be wrong on the numbers, my memory at 60 isn't what it used to be :crazyeye:

I wasn't a big fan of the diplomatic favor (is that what it was called?) in VI, but I kinda think that the influence in VII can be pretty neat. I had a pretty tough time in my most recent game. I was staying out of alliances, but eventually I got declared upon by two civs, that snowballed into two more the following turn. And I like that influence here can be used as an additional weapon, and the AI did pretty well in keeping the pressure up. Gengis wrecked me through war support, and my closest neighbour kept sanctioning me. I couldn't defend against it all, and it turned into a really fun defensive war on several fronts.
The closest neighbour was definitely the "sanction-happy" one in this particular game. I actually had a good relationship with them at the start, but I ruined that, which came back to bite me later.

All these systems have a ways to go I think, but the war and how it proceeded felt pretty "dynamic" for lack of a better word.

So in my next game, already by turn 25 I've been sanctioned twice, one each from Machiavelli and Napoleon. Guess it's very random (or leader-related)?!

Yes, it guess it depends on leaders - Napoleon (at least emperor) likes sanctions, as far as I know, not sure about the rest. And it depends on the situation too - there before AI used denounce only, now they use sanctions too.

In my current game it definitely feels a bit over the top - Napoleon and Machiavelli (only those 2 though) just won't stop sanctioning me, I'm at turn 95 in Antiquity and our relationships are frankly in the toilet:

Then they have made it easy for you to solve the problem. You declare Formal War, take all of their settlements, and they can’t sanction you anymore.
