First of all, I apologize for making my first post in this community in the Tech Help section, but after lurking for a few days I have not been able to find the solution to my problem. After meaning to get Civilization 4 for a while, I got the complete edition (Civ 4, Warlords and BTS) for Christmas and I’ve been enjoying it immensely.

The problem I have is when I try to load a game I’ve been playing for around 3-5 hours (often around turns 250-300, at around the industrial/modern era while the save-game file is at around 300kb) the game is very unstable and I have CTDs after around 2 minutes of play (making it unplayable). Most often with the CTD I suffer graphical distortion to my desktop (it looks like Andy Warhol has repainted my desktop) leading me to reboot my computer and then it goes back to normal. I must stress unlike other save-game threads I have seen on the forum, I can load the save, but it’s so unstable it is pretty much unplayable.

It happened with one save-game, so I thought I’d start a new game (on standard map setting, same as before) and the game was running smoothly; until I seemed to have hit the same wall. When I say I’ve been playing for around 3-5 on one save, I don’t mean in one sitting, meaning it can’t be a memory leak. I turned turning the graphics down to low and turning off various effects to try and help the game run smoother, thinking it might be due to all the units and improvements on the map etc., but my save games still lock-up and then CTD after 2 minutes (or less) of playing. However starting a new game everything runs well, until the same amount of progress has been made (around 250-300 turns, around 4 hours of play, at around industrial age).

My drivers are up to date, and I have patched the game to version 3.17, so I am at a loss at what is causing my games to become unstable and just repeatedly crash after a certain time spent on them.

And here are my specs, hopefully they might help:
Intel Pentium D, 2.8ghz (dual core)
Nvidia Geforce 7300SE (512meg)
RAM: 1022meg (Virtual memory, an extra 1533meg)

I hope I’ve explained my problem clearly for us to be able to find a possible solution.

Welcome to CFC :band:

could you post a screenshot of what happens? It is possible that it is more of a problem with the graphics card than the game - especially if it persists after the game crashes?
also: after a crash open the Windows event manager and look for any error messages in there that relate to the game.
