Here is the situation --- Small map, continents, 6 civs, monarch level. I (China) have secured the smaller of the two continents for myself. At the moment, the world is at peace.

History --- I ran off England, India, and France. I enlisted the Iroquois to fight India only, India crunched them.

India has about 150 point lead on me and a 1-2 tech lead. Its 1345 AD, and I'm about to get nationalism. China has at least nationalism and steam power. They appear primed to become a "Killer AI." My military is "weak" compared to them.

Recent events --- India was warring w/ France and I was concerned about France's chances to defend themselves, and thus India growing larger. So, I opted for a "surprise" attack (no RoP) on India's capital. I wanted to raze it, send a message and culture-destroy all at once.

Geography --- India has three cities including their capital surrounded by mountains and near the coast, just 2 turns by galleon away from my coastline. I unloaded several galleons full of Riders (later cavalry) and went to work.

Outcome --- Delhi razed, and one city captured --- sued for peace and gained some gold and MPP (needed some time to rebuild). During the battles, I earned a GL. Other civs are no more than vassal states to either India or myself. India has tons of resources and luxuries.

I'm considering to save my GL to rush-build the UN and go for a diplomatic victory --- catering to the smaller civs along the way. All victory conditions are activated. Desperately looking for my first monarch victory!

What do you think?

well what you could do is get everyone to declare war on india and sit bak and watch them do that for a bit then interrupt and start killing india yourself then by that time india should be dead and therefore you said that u were the 2nd civ well with india dead you could just wait until the end because eventually your histograph score will go above theirs or you could build spaceship if you have a lot of productive cities or with india out of the way you could just go and kill every one else for a conquest/domination victory because at 1345 ad you still have a lot of time left

Saving GL for UN is risky (with one already you won't get any more GLs) especially with so long to go....
and you run the risk of not winning a diplo victory (your sneak attack on India could have damaged your reputation).

Save the game - try what you suggest - if it doesn't work reload and try something else (some consider this cheating...personally I think it perfectly sensible).

Don't save it for the UN. Build an Army with it and use it against India. I think you have to go for the conquest/domination victory, because in the battle against the rest of the world, you'll get a new GL, probably. And your reputation has been damaged, so I think most of the AI's won't vote for you, if you want everyone to vote because you've built the UN.

It worked!!!:)

India was building it long before me but in a city where it would take 60 turns. I needed five techs to be able to start building (using GL) the UN. India, of course, would not sell me techs. I was able to jack up my research, and in 1898, I had fission. I was able to get radio from India for several hundred gold which confused me. Why did he then decide to deal w/ me? He wouldn't sell me anything else.

I had America, France, and the Iroquois polite to gracious w/ gifts of luxuries and techs, sometimes multiple techs. India remained furious w/ me. I maintained a MPP w/ India for about 80 turns (renewed twice). India knocked England out of the game. When India fought a short war w/ the Iroquois, I was able to cancel my MPP w/ India before ruining a great relationship w/ Hiawatha.

From here on, I was worried about India attacking me. I had two cities on Ganghi's continent, but they were reinforced to the gills w/ infantry, cavalry, artillery and bombers (surrounded by well-manned bunkers).

I nearly blew it, however. Once I knew the UN was mine, I signed MPPS w/ America, France, and the Iroquois. I figured now was the best time for India to attack. I'm sure he had nukes (I never risked planting spies). But, America declared war on Hiawatha, forcing me to fight Lincoln. When the vote came down, I won 3 -2 (America voted for Gandhi).

It was a tense game, balancing the civs. My score was pathetic (2000+), but I got my first monarch victory!:D

Congrats on your first Monarch win, I got my first Monarch wins with China. Those wins have almost convinced me that the Industrious civ trait is probably overwhelming with the proper use of workers and tile improvements.

Yes, I finded that out a while ago: Industrious Civs are most of all the best and the mightiest (?). I'm China now too, and the advance goes a lot faster. I think you always have to be a Civ with Industrious.

dojoboy: i find it especially important to get the UN when I will not be strong enough to be in the vote, but you should never risk not getting it! it's so easy to loose on diplo if somsone else builds it! So i started saving leaders an age before unless i have a huge war planned :D

Absolutley! In my current game, I had been building a palace to switch over to UN production --- now I'm 8 turns away from building it. The other civs are yet to enter the modern age. I'm fairly sure I could win the UN again because I'm allied w/ two civs against the fourth, but I'm shooting for a s/s victory

and even if you don't win - just say 'NO' to vote ;)
