The "Save Game" dialog box in Civ5 won't let you type in a filename longer than 32 characters, which is quite a severe limitation if you keep a lot of savegames around and want to give your savegames a more descriptive name. The limitation is also worse since the autofill of leader name, turn number, and year already takes up nearly 32 characters, especially for the leaders with longer names. It also doesn't make much sense, since modern OSes allow much longer filenames (these aren't the days of MS-DOS 8.3 filename format).

Note that if you rename the savegame to longer than 32 characters outside Civ5, through your OS's Finder/Explorer/whatever, Civ5 can load the renamed savegame just fine, so clearly the 32-character limitation is not something "core" to Civ5 that Civ5 can't handle.

Does anyone know how to modify the XML or the game to allow typing in savegame filenames longer than 32 characters?

Quick and dirty hack to see if it's just the UI and not also the game core dll, in SaveMenu.xml search for MaxLength="32" and increase it. Then see if you can save/load a game with a longer name

Wow, you rock: I tested it, and it works perfectly! Amazed that you found the solution so fast; thanks! :goodjob:

By the way, just to clarify for anyone else wondering about this, as I mentioned in my original post, unmodified Civ5 always lets you load a savegame filename with >32 characters; it just doesn't let you type over 32 characters when saving a filename (though if a save file already exists with a filename over 32 chars, you can overwrite it by clicking on it, but that's only useful if you want to overwrite an existing savefile). But thanks to this nice solution, now we type whatever we want! :D
