Here's my problem:
I'm running VISTA. CIV 4 played well. I unistalled it (daughter who played it moved out). daughter moved back a few months later. Then, I re-installed it and now it won't run. I can see it on my machine, but when I try to run it, I get the following error message: Please log in with administration privileges and try again.

I did install it under my log in- and I am the administrator. I have checked that for sure.
So- it seems to me that this may be a Windows problem, but can anyone help?

I downloaded the latest patch, but that can't run because it can't see that CIV 4 is loaded. Get an error that says Can't run the patch because there is no CIV4- but there is- I see it in my program files.

ARGH.

Thanks.

welcome to cfc :band:

in vista using an admin account alone does not always cut it - you'll likely need to install and patch the game with admin rights, i.e. right click on the installer and patches and choose run as administrator.
That said - you should also first remove all files left behind by the installer - is this civ4 alone or also one of the expansion packs?

It is not an expansion pack. It's CIV4 Gold Edition.

Does uninstalling via the control panel's programs and features unistall it completely or are there some hidden files somewhere?

ok civgold includes civ4 and warlords the below was written for those seperately so the file(s) might be different - just delete whatever of these you can find after using control panel to uninstall it :)

Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\sid meier's civilization 4" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\warlords" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\application data\my games\sid meier's civilization 4" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\application data\my games\warlords" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\local settings\application data\my games\sid meier's civilization 4" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\local settings\application data\my games\warlords" manually
(note: application data is a hidden directory so you need to configure windows explorer to show hidden files, also these directories in application data are sometimes removed by the uninstall routine)
Delete "...\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{CFBCE791-2D53-4FCE-B3FB-D6E01F4112E8}" (Civ4)
Delete "...\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{3E4B349F-10B5-4586-9D99-489A90A8B228}" (Warlords)
(note: InstallShield Installation Information is a hidden directory so you need to configure windows explorer to show hidden files).

OK- I uninstalled and installed it as administrator by right-clicking. Still same problem. now what can I do?
Thanks!

Saw your reply. I'll unisntall again, then find any of those files and delete those, then try it all again. This takes patience!

Deleted all CIV 4 and Warload files i could find, even the hiddlen ones, then installed as administrator. No go. Still same message.
argh. Maybe i missed some files.

(I couldn't find these;
... Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{CFBCE791-2D53-4FCE-B3FB-D6E01F4112E8}" (Civ4)
"...\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{3E4B349F-10B5-4586-9D99-489A90A8B228}" (Warlords)

i'll look again and try it all over.

I haven't tried again. gotta get some quiet PC time! maybe later tonight if i can wrestle my daughter for the computer.

I got it. Once you load as Administrator, then you have to launch the application as Administrator the same way. Find the application in the program files of your hard drive, then right click and "run as administrator". Worked for me! now I have a very happy and impresed daughter, and that is saying alot.

Good luck! Let me know if that workds.
