Scenario Making: Lets get it organised

How come no one ever does WWI?

If I get into Scenario Design (no guarantees), I think I'll set up a 1871-1914 Scenario where Europe caroms towards disaster (The Lights Have Gone Out Across Europe), and the player will have to be either England, France, Germany, Austria, Russia, or for fun, Serbia.

Does anyone know if you can put specific triggers in a scenario? For example, if the Computer is playing Russia, in 1917 a Revolution happens and the government changes to Communism.

BTW, if you're a military type, READ Massie's DREADNOUGHT. Amazing book.

...and the culture goes to 0, there will be a civil war, and Germans will get Finland.

Well if you want to keep it a bit historical correct there is not much troop movement.(only killzone's :( )

Well, Civ 3 looks like Diplomacy and Trade are going to be huge, so perhaps there will be more "non-military" scenarios forthcoming (obviously military will play a part, but not necessarily the most important part).

I Plan to work on a Italian Renaissance Scenario, where I expect a wonderful War (Spanish, French) vs Culture (Italian states) struggle.

If anyone has ideas or partially done work on this subject please answer.

How 'bout some more maps?

World maps are fine. But what about Europe? Asia? The Middle East?

Get crackin', someone!

OK...can i just say something to all scenario makers...I loved the original Civ2 Roman Empire Scenario...ive played it more than any other...but why?....good question...it was easy to get into...it wasnt too complicated...wasnt overwhelming when you first start...was very basic...I never once played the original ww2 scenario that came with Civ2 because its the exact oposite of the roman empire one...there are soo many cities, soo many units to start with...

then i went into aplolyton, or maybe it was this site, dont remember...went looking for some good scenarios...found just a few, because scenario makers tend to over do it with cities and the amount of units...I would love to see a Punic war scenario that doesnt have 50 cities in Italy..know what i mean?...Thats too much micro management just for a little battle scenario...

And then there was this Hundred yrs War scenario...and it was just way to overwelming...musta had 40 cities just in France...too many units to start with...Never even got thru 1 turn before i quit...

well...My whole point here is to say, Dont over do it...dont let yourself get outta hand when placing cites...there doesnt need to be 1 city to occupy ever square inch of the map....and there doesnt need to be 20 units per square mile...hehe...ok..thanks...hope this opens some eyes...!

There's a few scenarios I'd love to work on - but first, I'll actually have to get the game, then see how hard the editor is to work with. I've wanted to do an East Timor 1999 scenario for ages, and I wouldn't mind doing a couple of Australian ones too.

My first priority is definitely going to be towards making several detailed maps of Europe...

I'm also interested in making a scenario about the Middle Ages, from the fall of Rome until around 1200.

Unrealistic. North and South Korea are very close to eachother in recent years. They are soon to be united. (Two countries walked together at the opening ceremony of Sydney 2000.)

It is very realistic. The people still don't like each other, and the governments are just playing nice to get more aid.

Basically, Russia whispered into China's and Korea's ear that if they pretend they are the US' friends, the US gives them free stuff.

N. Korea/S. Korea and China/Taiwan are the largest probabilities for the next major conventional conflict.

Obviously the first scenarios will be mostly historical ones, but don't forget scenarios based on books, TV shows, and movies. I loved the LotR, StarTrek, and StarWars scenarios for Civ2. While I'm not a scenario creator, and don't forsee myself having the time to become one in the near future, I'll offer some ideas:
The ones I listed above
"Dr. Strangelove" (Yes I know this would be hard because you need multiple civs for the game, but there are a few ways it could be done)
"The Iliad" and/or "The Odyssey" (the latter might be hard on its own, but it could be a continuation of the first)
"King Arthur"
that's it for now, I hope I've inspired a few of you!

I really would like a good middle age scenario

Some issues that IMHO are still not resolved and probably not resolvable in CIVII include:
* A good way to replicate the struggle between papacy and empire which was much less military than anything else. Here I still have to see how CIVIII actually works in some aspects.
* A way to to have a Muslim expansion that can at some point be stopped (here I think a wise use of golden age can be excellent in doing the job). The same is likely to apply to Vikings.

By the way the key issues of a Middle age scenario should be:
1. The evolution (cultural growth?) of some selected barbarian CIVs like Franks, Anglo-Saxons, Lombards, Visigoths, Ostrogoths, Bulgarians, Slavs which should all try to inherit as much as possible of the Roman Legacy.
2. The emergency of new CIVs with a strongly different culture (Arabs, Vikings) which could or could not assimilate into the mainstream european culture.
3. A good definition of the role of Byzantyum, of the City-States (Sea Republics in Italy, Hanseatic League), and of the "partially unmaterial" civs (papacy and empire).
4. Force or not the "crusade concept".

Other interesting matters should be:
1. Key strategic resources: as an example, other from obsious luxuries, I suspect that we should have two different horses (a sturdy, "Norman" horse for Heavy Knights and a smaller fast "arabic' or "mongol" horse for light eastern cavalries), then good timber for fleetbuilding, etc etc.
2. Include or not a "plague effect" and if yes how.
3. What set as main goal: most CIVs should want to spread the true faith, others just want to grow rich, others unite the world, others make a national country and move to extra-european colonisation (just think of a middle-age scenario which ends when you are able to launch your caravel/spaceshim across the atlantic/outer space anc reach America/Alpha Centauri: it makes perfect sense to me).
4. Define a proper tech path and related military units.
5. Include a difference between mercenary, and urban militia /feudal units: the first should cost more to mantain AND desert if theu do not like you, the second should basically accept only to defend their cities and surrounding or fight well if in a "crusade" environment.

Cheers

It's a moot point since the so-called editor is nothing but a map/rules editor with no scripting or unit/city placement.
You can probably get some interesting results messing with the rules but that' all you're going to get.

I'll probably take it back. I refuse to pay more money for what should have been included like they promised.

Also, what's this "we don't need this many X type scenarios"?

IF you could build scenarios I figure for my money I'll make as many WWII/Gettysburg/ etc etc scenarios as I want. And if someone thinks "OH that's not realistic" Don't play it!

maps of unique areas are not possible because there is no way to make your world Flat. They are ALL round maps such that you cannot do Europe only unless you want to walk east of Moscow and find yourself in Portugal....

Culture. It's a big improvement, and a quite feasable way to simulate things like this, I figure. :) A struggle between the "secular culture" of the German emperor, and the "religious culture" of the popes.

the best ww2 scenario has been the 'Whole ww2' scenario that was available to download from apolyton (XX century) for civ2. although the pacific/european theater scen. were interesting, the entire map is the best way to play ww2 scen. i even remember one scenario that was just the normady invasion. pain in the butt!!

pacific theater of operations (for nintendo). for an old game, it was probably one of the best ww2 scen i have ever played. i wish civ had something like that but with entire map/world. right now, i just wish they had a ww2 scenario period.

All right. I'm really no good at it but I'd like to do a CALVINANDHOBBESIZATION scenario.
Awhile ago I wrote some stuff for one that included a map with two continents looking like
C&H. Water would fill in the eyes, stripes, etc. There would also be a middle strip of land
for the Girls (Susie Derkins) and the Parents (Mom and Dad).
There was also:
Techs such as:
Transmogrifaction
Dial
Ethicator
Transmogrifer Gun
Lookout Hill
A Fall Olympics
Writing
Stupendous Man
Flooding the House
Units:
Stelh Bomber-Spiff Space Ship (SSS)
Settlers-Settlers (but looks like a cardboard box)
Warriors-Water Balloon (Calvin holding water balloons)
Catapults-Calvindiscus (Hobbes throwing Calvin like a human discus)
Diplomat and Spy-G.R.O.S.S. Spy (Diplomat Hobbes w/G.R.O.S.S. hat, Spy Calvin w/G.R.O.S.S. hat)
Wonders:
1. An ‘A’ on Calvin’s Test
2. Blasting Into the 5th Dimension
3. Yukon Journey
4. Frying the School With A Huge Magnifying Glass In Space
5. Calvin Getting On the “Good Boy” List
6. Day Without Pouncing
7. Voyage to Mars
8. Making Mutant Killer Monster Snow Goons
9. Learning How the Sun Sets
10. The Flying Carpet
11. Hobbes Getting A Math Problem Right
12. Calvin Makes His Bed
13. Calvin Gets to Stay Up Late
14. A Sure Way to Defeat Monsters
15. Calvin’s Dad Forgetting to Build Character
16. A Vacation Someplace Besides “Itchy Island”.
17. The Essential
18. The Indispensable
19. The Authoritive
20. A Tiger Trap
21. Hobbes Scares Off A Monster
22. The Ultimate Water Balloon
23. The Ultimate Cookie Protector
24. Secession From The Family
25. Complete & Total TV Privileges
26. Spiff Returns To Earth
27. A Giant Statue of Calvin
28. Selling the Earth to Aliens for 50 Alien Tree Leaves
Well, if I could get some help w/ the map and icons...lol (I don't have the equipment or know-how, lol)
Maybe someday.

God bless!
