Ok, I've decided to do a quick 'n' dirty story game using my personal modification of Embryodead and Yoda Power's Medieval European Mod.

The changes I've made are thus:

-Replaced Bohemia with Switzerland (default leader is Wilhelm Tell).... UU's the same, but I re-named the Houfnice to Culverin.

-Added a few new techs, buildings and wonders to incorporate certain Europa Universalis concepts: I.e. Germany, Switzerland and Burgandy can build a building (in their capitol only) called a "German Principality", and if a civ controls two or more of these buildings, then they can build a GW called "The German Empire" that grants a series of bonuses and produces Landsknecht mercenaries every 20 turns.

Similarly, Spain, Aragon and Portugal can build an "Iberian Kingdom" building in their capitol, and if any faction controls two or more of THOSE, then they can build a GW called "Kingdom of Spain" which produces Tercios and provides other benefits.

In addition, gaining control of any two of the (former) capitols of England, Ireland or Scotland will allow you to build a "Great Britain" wonder, any two of Sicily, Venice or Florence will allow you to buid a "Kingdom of Italy" GW, Control of the capitol of Poland and Lithuania allows creation of the "Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth", control of any two capitols of the Rus, Novgorod or the Golden Horde allows creation of the "Russian Empire" and control of the capitols of both Denmark and Sweden allows creation of the "Union of Kalmar"...

I also made a few other minor tweaks here and there...

Anyways, the setup:

Switzerland, Duke (Monarch) difficulty, Small world with Raging Barbarians and everything else randomized.

Game settings: VP scoring (via goods shipments produced by "*Resource* Trader" SW)

Domination, Culture, Conquest and Expedition (Space Race) victories allowed... I'm also playing using the NoRaze patch (I'm SO sick and tired of the AI constantly pillaging everything in sight!)

Now, on with the story:

Kapitel 1: AD 700-800, Expansion und Entdeckung
(AD 700-800, Expansion and Discovery)

Spoiler :
The sleek form of the armored air/space cruiser, Vereinegte Staaten Schiff Gettysburg drifted into orbit over yet another more or less parallel earth, and the Astrogation Officer turns to the ships disreputable commanding officer and says, "Mein Kapitän..."

Kapitän zur Sternen Benjamin "Hikaro Takayama" Beinbrech replies, "Ja, was is los, Leutnant?"

<"Sir, we've arrived at the coordinates you specified and have achieved parking orbit!"> the Astrogator replied.

"<Excellent work, Ludwig!"> the captain replied, "<Have the landing party meet me in the shuttle bay.... It's time to chalk up another victory for our cause!>"

Soon the shuttle carrying Kapitän Beinbrech and some of his key staff officers/advisers lands on the far side of a tall mountain, from which two nomadic tribes' camps can be seen... One is not particularly distinguished, but the other tribe's tents are festooned with red banners bearing a white cross.

It was to this camp that the captain and his men travelled. After greeting the tribal leaders and explaining his vision for their people, along with teaching the elders the key to masonry, the tribe decided to accept Kapitän Beinbrech as their leader. Thus it was in 700 AD that Freiherr Benjamin Beinbrech became the leader of the Swiss people and his first act was to split the tribe into two groups... One would head Northwest to take advantage of the large river flowing down from the mountain, while the other would travel East in hopes of finding suitable lands.

The Settler party traveling Northwest discovered vast plains with large herds of sheep and bountiful grasslands with abundant grains growing to the Northeast, and Iron in some nearby hills to the South of the other tribal village.

In AD 705, Freiherr Beinbrech leads the first party in founding the city of Schwyz on the Rhein river. When representatives are sent from the city to inform the nearby Vlach tribe that they are now citizens of Switzerland, they not only welcome the news with open arms, but also present the Freiherr with scrolls containing a treatise on how to create Organized Armies (allows training of Archers).

The Freiherr sets the research priorities of his wise men to creating a Barter system and allocates 70% of the national revenue to support that goal (Note: In MeM, like Civ II, most governments have research caps, and Autocracy, the starting government, is capped at 70%), and he begins to establish a German Principality in Schwyz (German Principality, as mentioned earlier, allows possibility of creating the German Empire, but it also acts as a Barracks, gives a boost to the treasury and makes 1 person happy)

Ten years later, the Second group of Settlers arrives at the shores of the Donau (Danube) and founds the city of Bern near forests with abundant Wild Game and a good supply of Quality Timber (Timber is a strat resource for building high-end ships and Siege weapons, as well as some improvements and wonders).

In the years AD 725-730, Schwyz not only establishes itself as the head of a German Principality, but representatives from Bern also arrive in the city to establish the Swiss Confederacy.

(Swiss confederacy is a wonder allows anyone who captures my capitol and who has the appropriate government, to build a "vassal state" Small Wonder that acts like the Forbidden Palace.... All factions have similar buildings)

In AD 740, the first band of scruffy-looking Swiss Warriors have finished training in Bern and begin following the Donau Northeast to see what they can find.

In 750, Schwyz also sends out a band of Warriors, who head South to explore the course of the Inn river. The Warriors from Bern spot bands of Barbarian warrios, belonging to the Severian and Banu Hilal tribes.

Shortly after their report reaches Schwyz, they are slaughtered to the last man by the Severians.

AD 755: The council of Wise Men presents Freiherr Beinbrech with an organized Barter system and begins work on establishing a Manor system:

Dyes are discovered South of Schwyz, outside our borders, and two sources of high-quality Amber are discovered right outside Bern!

The Borders of Schwyz expand due to the Freiherr's (Palace) influence, while the Warriors exploring the Southern regions make contact with another highly-organized nation known as Denmark. They report back that the Danes have a larger military than we do (thanks to the stupid Severians killing our Warriors outside Bern!), but they are extremely backwards and have nothing to offer us in trade.

AD 775: Bern trains our first Archer company, who is able to get revenge on the Severians who killed our Warrior company earlier (and would have added looting Bern to their list of crimes, were it not for our Archers' timely intervention).

AD 780: Schwyz also trains an Archer company and begins organizing an expedition to settle a new town.

AD 785: The Bern Archers discover an Abodrite camp near another source of Iron... Unfortunately said Iron is between two volcanoes, which severely limits the options for building a town near enough to exploit it.

AD 790: The Abodrite camp is wiped out and the 25 Gold discovered therein is sent back to Schwyz, along with the Archers' reports of border patrols wearing Gold hauberks being spotted from the top of the mountain where the Abodrite camp was located.

In the Southwest, our Warrior company spots an Iberian encampment near the site selected for the soon to be launched city-founding expedition.... The site is coastal and has access to herds of Horses and the previously discovered Dyes.

AD 795: The Archer company exploring the area Northeast of Bern wanders into a Seljuk village. After regaling the village chieftain with tales of the outside world and the Swiss Confederacy, the chieftain thanks the Archer company's Hauptmann by giving him copies of some yellowed scrolls he has.

The scrolls are sent to Schwyz, where the various wise men and priests discover that they are a Classical Latin treatise on Shipbuilding written by a famous Roman naval architect.

In the South, our sole remaining Warrior company wipes out the Iberian camp, collecting 25 Gold and paving the way for our Settlers to build a city there, once the expedition gets organized, that is....

AD 800: Bern trains another Archer company, while the Archers exploring the Northern Reaches discovers the camp where the Severians that killed our Warrior company came from... Soon revenge will be ours!

And so the first century of the Swiss Confederacy comes to an end.

(Map of the Swiss Confederacy in all its "glory"):

Black Dotted Line between Bern and Schwyz marks border between the Canton of Bern and the Canton of Schwyz

Thread added to subscriptions. :D

BTW, it seems that Rhein and Main are the same river. When you look right to the edge of fog of war where the rivers flow, you can see it clearly. ;)

Actually, as will become apparent in this next update, the Main Flows into the Rhein, which continues on North, much like in real Life... Of course the city at which the two flow together will be different. but still, same concept ;)

Anyways, now for the next exciting installment into the history of Switzerland:

Kapitel 2: AD 800 - 900, Stadt Gründen und Krieg
(Chapter 2: AD 800 - 900, City Founding and War)

Spoiler :
AD 805: Several scouts wearing a gold tabards emblazoned with a castle enter a tribal village before our Archer company is able to reach it. When our Archer company finally arrives, they are greeted by the scouts. The leader of the unarmed scouting party tells the Hauptmann in command of the Bern Archers that he represents the Kingdom of Castile and Her Most Catholic Majesty, Queen Isabella I.

After sitting down to talk, messages were sent back to Freiherr Beinbrech and Queen Isabella, and it is agreed upon for the Swiss to trade their knowledge of Masonry to the Castillians for their knowledge of classic Mythology.

In the Northern Wilderness, the Archer company from Schwyz eliminates the Severian Camp that launched the attack on the ill-fated Bern Warrior company. 25 Gold worth of plunder is recovered.

AD 810: An Warrior party belonging to an unknown tribe of barbarians attacks our Warrior company exploring the Southern Reaches, but end up getting killed for their troubles.

AD 815: Schwyz FINALLY gets its Settler expedition organized (the Freiherr is spotted doing cartwheels on the Palace Grounds), while Bern finishes training a construction crew (Worker). The Work Crew begins building a road from Bern to Schwyz.

Southeast of Bern, our Archer company spots a Zhmud camp on one of the Volcanoes near the borders of Castile.

AD 820: Doktor Frankenstein, our chief alchemist and Science Adviser, reports that we have mastered the secrets of Manorialism, and that his wise men, alchemists and conjurers are even now looking into the secrets of Fortification.

In the Northern Wastes (tundra), our Archer company wipes out a Selonian War party camped out on a Volcano. When they reach the volcano's peak, they catch a glimpse of a distant sea further North.

Not long after that, they are attacked by a Banu Hilal raiding party, but emerge victorious... Freiherr Beinbrech awards them elite status for their valor. A company of Warriors wearing mustard-yellow and red striped tunics slaughters another barbarian raiding party nearby.

Further South, the Castillians are nice enough to wipe out the Zhmud camp for us.

AD 825: The Northern Archers make contact with the Red and Yellow striped Warriors. Their Capitano informs Hauptmann Arexander der Finne that he and his men serve His Majesty, King Roger II of Sicily, a maritime kingdom to the far North. While their overall military strength is greater than ours, the Sicilians are way behind in technology.

In the Southern Reaches, our sole remaining Warrior company discovers an Oghuz encampment near the Danish capitol of Roskilde.

Late in the year, a Zhmud raiding party loots Bern and carries off 101 Gold. Marius Schatten (Shadow), Graf von Bern and military adviser for the Swiss Confederacy, sends a nastygram to Freiherr Benjamin Beinbrech von Schwyz for allowing such an oversight to happen. The Freiherr acknowledges his responsibility and promises to get some troops over to Bern as soon as they finish training.

AD 830: The Warrior company in the Southern Reaches wipes out the Oghuz camp, scoring 25 Gold worth of loot and earning the thanks of King Canute of Denmark for eliminating that particular threat.

Later on, an Oghuz raiding party, unaware that their base camp has been captured, wanders back and is wiped out by our Warrior company. The Freiherr promotes the warriors to Elite status as a reward for their valor (and to hopefully distract the populace from the horrible humiliation handed to us by the Zhmud at Bern).

AD 835: The Settler expedition that launched from Schwyz in AD 815 FINALLY reaches their destination and founds the city of Zürich on the southern coast. This location, although located some distance from the Inn river, has access to natural Dyes (lux), herds of Horses (strat) and large schools of Fish off the coast (bonus).

Bearing in mind what happened at Bern, the city begins training a company of Spearmen to provide city defense.

An Archer company that had recently arrived at Bern kills another Zhmud Raiding party hoping to duplicate their earlier success and is promoted to veteran status.

Later in the year, another Zhmud raiding party attacks the recently promoted veteran Archers and get shot full of holes for their troubles....

AD 840: The first company of Swiss Spearmen completes training in Schwyz... Hopefully the local barbarian rabble will think twice about raiding our towns now!

Later in the year, word arrives through diplomatic channels that the Kingdom of Castile, in their infinite wisdom, has founded the city of Toledo RIGHT NEXT TO A VOLCANO!!!! :wallbash:

AD 845: Our elite Warriors in the South wipes out the last Oghuz raiding party in the area and hits the South-westernmost point of the continent. Arexander der Finne's elite Archers discover a Cour camp in the far North.

AD 850: Our veteran Archers exploring the Southeast kills a Zhmud warrior on the Easternmost of the two Southeast volcanos and spots some dark purple border markers in the distance.

In the far North, Arexander der Finne's Archers wipe out the Cour camp and grab 25 gold worth of loot.

Later in the year, the Kingdom of Denmark founds Odense near the site chosen by Freiherr Beinbrech for the next SWISS city... Oh well, you can't win them all, I guess.

AD 855-860: Veteran Archers wipe out the Zhmud camp that sent out the raiding party that looted Bern, recapturing some of the stolen gold as well as getting revenge for their raid on Bern.

One of our Spear companies attacks an Oghuz encampment that happens to have three entire raiding parties holed up in it, sparking a battle royale! When the dust settles, all three Oghuz raiding parties are killed to the last man, our Spearmen are promoted to elite status and 25 gold worth of loot is carted back to the treasury.

Schwyz also begins organizing another Settler expedition in 860, while Castile founds the city of Compostela at the mouth of the Danube.

AD 865: Arexander der Finne's Archers make contact with the Aragonese. According to Hauptmann Arexander's report, King Ferdinand's realm is not only dirt-poor, and far behind us in technology, but they even have an army that is about the same size as ours!

Closer to home, our Worker crew finishes the road from Bern to Schwyz and begins extending it to the Sheep herds in the plains surrounding Schwyz. (Sheep represent Wool, a luxury resource)

AD 870: Arexander's Archers hit the Northeast end of the continent and begin heading back towards Switzerland.

Our elite Warriors in the South, cut off by Danish territory, decide to risk traveling through to get back into open territory. King Canute tells them to get lost, and they explain that they were merely passing through and will be leaving his realm with all due haste, so he sends them on their way with a stern warning of what will happen if they so much as LOOK back on their way out.....

A Zhmud raiding party tries to plunder Bern, but our Spearmen put those plans on the rocks in a hurry!

AD 875: Our construction crews complete the road to the sheep herds outside Schwyz, allowing our merchants to ship Wool into Schwyz and Bern. In addition, we'll be able to establish a Wool Trader as well! (Wool Trader is a SW that generates Shipments, i.e. flag units every so many turns and requires Wool)

AD 890: Schwyz sends out our second Settler expedition, which sets off to claim a nice site along the Main river that has access to Granite (strat), Salt (lux) and Silver (bonus).

Later that year, a Castillian Warrior company launches an un-provoked attack on Bern!

Their Warriors get wiped out by our Spearmen, who are promoted to veteran status, and a state of war now exists between Switzerland and Castile! (looks like Swiss Spearmen are proving their mettle a bit earlier in this history  )

AD 895: Our veteran Spearmen in Bern wipe out a Castillian Archer company outside the city and are promoted to elite to reward their bravery!

The Settler expedition spots a Veleti raiding party camping out next to the site chosen for our next city, so it was decided that they would halt until one of our Archer companies in the East could return and deal with that "problem"... Then, in a surprising turn of events, a Sicilian Warrior company wipes the Veleti raiding party out! Freiherr Beinbrech sends a letter of thanks to King Roger II.

AD 900: Settler moves into position, and spots the main Veleti encampment on the side of a mountain a good distance off... Arexander der Finne's elite Archers move in to wipe it out...

The elite Spearmen in Bern repel the last of the initial Castillian thrust into Swiss territory, but unfortunately, no great leaders rise up from their ranks to lead our people to victory...

A Veleti raiding party leaves their encampment to threaten our Settler expedition, but they won't be able to reach them before they can get our newest city built!

AD 902: The city of Basel is founded in the hills along the Main River and begins recruiting a company of Spearmen. The Sicilian Warriors that wiped out the first Veleti raiding party threatening Basel's site in 895 also wipe the raiding party threatening Basel itself... Freiherr Beinbrech personally thanks them for their selfless act of bravery!

Meanwhile, reinforcements arrive in Bern to stave off any further Castillan attacks and Denmark founds the city of Arhus near the tip of the Southern Peninsula.

Thus this chapter ends with the Swiss Confederacy doubled in size and at war with Castile, one of the more powerful nations in the world.

Well at least you're not landlocked like the real Switzerland.. means colonialism is possible!

Good luck cracking a few Castilian garrisons over the head. Get ready to conquer... err... "Confederate" them. :D

"Hauptmann Arexander der Finne" :woohoo::lol::goodjob:

I just wish I really was a Hauptmann...not! :p My German is so bad that I couldn't make any orders.

(For those who can't speak German, Hauptmann means Captain in army(land) and der Finne means the Finn. So it is Captain Arexander the Finn for you. :p)

Well at least you're not landlocked like the real Switzerland.. means colonialism is possible!

Good luck cracking a few Castilian garrisons over the head. Get ready to conquer... err... "Confederate" them. :D

Actually, as you'll soon see, Zürich is going to be our ONLY port for the foreseeable future (That bit that LOOKS like the ocean East of Toledo....Yeah, that's just a BIG LAKE!!! ....It's freshwater, too!! That body of water is the biggest FRESHWATER lake I've ever seen in a Civ III game, and I suspect that it's right on the border for the maximum size for a freshwater lake... At least I'll be able to use it for irrigation. )

Arexander, I like to reward my loyal minions readers. :D

Take over the world!!!!!!!!!! Muhahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!

Looks great. I'm not familiar with this modpack. What is that white stuff halfway between Bern and Basel. Is that saltpeter already?

Also, to the east of Bern -- is that gold on the ground or copper? What's it good for?

I don't know how far along you've plaid, but this looks like a really crowded game. Even the AI is planting cities just 3 tiles apart. If you haven't done so already, I think you need to boogie down the Rhein real fast and plant a city that'll take up that cow resource NW of your sheep, even if that mean planting a town not on a river or snuggling up the border of Tropea. That's too much food too close to your capital to allow anyone else to grab it.

By the way, that "German Empire" wonder is a great idea. if this modification has 3 or 4 Spanish tribes in it, as similar Wonder called "Reconquista" might also be worth adding on (but again, I'm not familiar with this mod). I'm definitely following this thread.

The white stuff is SALT, a luxury resource (also allows building a "Salt Trader" that produces "Shipments") and the amber-colored stuff is, well, Amber, another luxury... I believe I did mention that Amber was discovered near Bern when I discovered Barter... (most resources in this mod, even luxuries, require techs, which is kind of annoying, especially when the AI can "see" them from the start...)

As for city founding... I'm going to be planting my next two cities or so where that Archer and Spearman are outside Jelling... I'll still get the cows (eventually), but I DO NOT want the Danes to get control of that Gold! Gold is an IMPORTANT and RARE strategic resource in this mod that allows, among other things, recruitment of powerful mercenary units, building of a Gold Mine improvement (that produces shipments every 20 turns), and, late-game, building Jewelry shops that boost lux and tax revenue...

Also, Cattle aren't nearly as significant in this mod as in the standard game... Yes, they still give the same food and prod bonus, but Wool (sheep) do as well, Grains give an even BIGGER food bonus and salt gives a food and trade bonus, just to name a few..... Which is why I tend to concentrate on strategic/luxury resources: NONE of your city improvements "increase commodity trading" like the markets in the standard game do (i.e. you only get ONE happy person per luxury... PERIOD!)

Yes, I DID add a "Kingdom of Spain" wonder to signify a unified Spanish Empire, provided you can control any two capitols of Castile, Aragon or Portugal....

Similar goes with Russia (Kievan Rus, Novgorod or Golden Horde), Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (Poland & Lithuania), Great Britain (Any two of England, Ireland and Scotland), Italy (Sicily, Florence or Venice) and the Union of Kalmar (Sweden and Denmark)...

I'm going to be planting my next two cities or so where that Archer and Spearman are outside Jelling...

Ach! This bodes not well for Jelling. They're going to be creamed Danish!

Kapitel 3: Der Kastilien Krieg
Chapter 3: The Castillian War

Spoiler :
When we last left the Swiss Confederacy, they were at war with the nefarious Kingdom of Castile, whose unsuccessful attempt to capture Bern had been soundly thwarted. The Castillian front is fairly quiet as this chapter opens, mostly due to both sides trying to get reinforcements in as fast as they can.....

AD 904: Hptmn. Arexander's Archer company wipes out the Veleti camp NE of Basel, and proceeds onward to reinforce said city after securing 25 Gold worth of loot. The elite Warriors exploring the Western Marches wipe out an unknown raiding party directly West of the Danish village of Jelling.

Later in the year, a Veleti raiding party, ticked off that we wiped out their base camp, attacks Arexander's Archers and is killed for their troubles.

In a somewhat more disturbing develepment, the Aragonese found the town of Valencia Northeast of Bern.... Looks like we're running out of space fast!

AD 906:

Doktor Frankenstein arrives with some welcome news: His wise men and monks have discovered the secret of effective Fortification and will soon start on the quest of understanding how to run a Feudal system, which, needless to say, will be a definite step up from our current Autocracy....

AD 910: The last of the reinforcements arrive in Bern, and all troops slotted for our strike force (2 companies of Archers and 1 Spearman company) will depart on the morrow!

On top of THAT good news, Bern has completed construction of a nice new Manor house for Graf Marius Schatten von Bern and begins organizing a Settler expedition (note: Manors, in addition to boosting tax revenue by 50% also produce culture).

AD 914: Zürich finally finishes training its company of Spearmen and also starts organizing a Settler expedition... We've got some ground to catch up here!

AD 918: The Berner Angriefsgruppe (Bern Strike Group) finally arrives at their objective and sets up camp on the volcano Northwest of Toledo... Soon the Castillians will pay for their folly!

AD 920: The Battle of Toledo begins with our Veteran Archer company unleashing a storm of arrows, along with the regular Archers... The veterans acquit themselves well, mowing down a company of Spearmen under their withering barrage, and earn a promotion to elite status in the process.

The regular Archers, on the other hand, set up a bit too close to the town and get flanked by some ballsy Castillian Spearmen and slaughtered to the last man. The Spearmen paid a hefty butcher bill for their success, and the elite Swiss Spearmen who accompanied the two Archer companies pushes them back into the town, initiating a bitter, house-to-house struggle.

It is not known exactly what caused the initial spark that started the blaze, whether it was hot coals from a blacksmith's shop scattered on some straw by scuffling soldiers, or a crock of lamp oil getting knocked into a cooking fire by a wildly-swung spear, but within minutes the entire town was ablaze. Soon, the few remaining enemy Spearmen left alive, along with whatever civilians could escape the inferno came forward bearing a white flag.

Toledo was burned to the ground, but we were able to recover 78 Gold worth of plunder and most of the civilian population from the devastation. The destruction of such an important city to the under-strength Swiss Army also finally convinced Queen Isabella to make peace with the Confederacy, and Freiherr Beinbrech was even gracious enough not to demand any reparations from the Castillians in light of their losses.

One deal that is hammered out in addition to the peace treaty, however is the exchange of our knowledge of Fortification for their skills in State Religion (I can finally build Temples!)

The highway from Schwyz to Zürich and Zürich's Dyes is also completed this year, giving the Swiss people even more reason to celebrate.

AD 922: Thanks to the addition of Toledo's refugees, Bern is able to send out its Settler expedition. The Settlers (especially the former citizens of Castile) are warned to build the new city a safe distance from either volcano in the area!

AD 928: Bern's territorial influence expands, much to the delight of Graf Marius Schatten von Bern.

AD 932: The expedition from Bern builds the city of Geneva (from the Latin word for Juniper, signifying re-birth and renewal) on the shores of an enormous freshwater lake that, depending on who you ask, is either known as Lago Geneva, Lago Zaragosa or Der Genfersee, with Iron, Horses and Fish nearby.

AD 934: Zürich finishes organizing its Settler expedition, which travels due West to claim a spot near the Danish town of Jelling (and hopefully will help press our claims to the Gold deposits in the area!). As soon as the Settlers have set out, the city begins setting up a Dye Trader to collect, transport and sell the valuable Dyes found near Zürich....

AD 936: Our Workers complete a road to the Iron deposits outside Schwyz, giving us our first STRATEGIC resource.

AD 038: Dr. Frankenstein reports that his people have figured out how to run a Feudal government and that they are now started on writing Literature suitable for properly recounting the (hopefully) glorious exploits of the Swiss people.

Schwyz also finishes organizing a Settler expedition and starts setting up a Wool Trader to drum up sales for all its Sheep products...

AD 940: Lucerne is founded immediately Southeast of Jelling and begins building a Temple.

Freiherr Beinbrech also trades Feudalism to Castile for Seafaring this year.

AD 942: Freiherr Beinbrech assembles the leaders of the various cantons, including Markgraf Arexander von Basel, Graf Bucky Rea von Zürich and Comte Sima Qian de Geneva, to Schwyz for an important meeting. "Gentlemen," he says, "I'm sure you all know that our current system of government sucks big time, and that we've also recently acquired the knowledge to implement a better system... Well, folks, due to the completion of several key construction projects and troop training programs, I feel the time is right to initiate those changes! Do any of you have any objections?"

When he looks at the faces of the various counts and barons gathered in his council chamber and sees no objections, he says, "Good! Let's be about it, then!"

Thus it was that the Swiss Cinfederacy began a rough period of transition from its heavy-handed Autocracy to a Feudal system.

AD 944: The town of Sankt Gallen is founded due West of Bern (and due North of Jelling), and it also starts construction on a Temple (which won't amount to much of anything until the current instability comes to an end....)

AD 946: The Kingdom of Denmark, obviously not liking the pressure Lucerne and St. Gallen are putting on Jelling, or our continual assertion of rightful ownership of the Gold deposits between Jelling and Schwyz decide to do something "proactive" about it: They declare war!

The Archer company defending St. Gallen, despite having no warning whatsoever of the impending Danish attack, somehow manages to wipe out their Warrior company and is promoted to elite status for their bravery by the Freiherr himself!

AD 948: The same elite Archer company, having the advantage of forewarning this time, ambushes and kills another Danish Warrior party outside Jelling.

Later in the year, we get word that Castile has started setting up the Holy Roman Empire (GW that gives two tech advances to whoever builds it first) in OVIEDO (rinky-dink 1 pop city with almost NO shield-bearing tiles) of all places!

AD 950: The elite Archers from St. Gallen, continuing their roll, wipe out the Spearmen defending Jelling, and unfortunately, in the process accidentally put an arrow through a pot of lamp oil, which runs into an open fire pit, sparking a blaze that ends up burning the town to ashes.

Two groups of citizens are captured fleeing the inferno and press-ganged into working parties, and the Archers manage to recover 7 Gold from the ruins.

Elsewhere, Freiherr Beinbrech orders the materials that have been allocated for building a Wool Trader be reassigned to setting up the Holy Roman Empire in Schwyz... Holy Roman Emperor is a GERMAN title, dammit, not Spanish!

AD 954: The period of virtual Anarchy ends and the Swiss Confederacy emerges as a powerful Feudal state! Now that the option is available, Herzog (Duke) Benjamin Beinbrech von Schwyz (as his new title under the new government is styled) allocates grants from the Royal Treasury to hurry construction of Temples in Geneva and Basel.

The Elite Archers of St. Gallen, continuing their brilliant record of kicking Danish ass, kills a Danish Spear company and captures the Settler expedition, netting us two more "volunteer" worker parties. :D

AD 956: Herzog Beinbrech finally hammers out a peace treaty with King Canute of Denmark, bringing this particular war to a swift end.

In other news, our workers finish building a road to the Amber deposits outside Bern, netting another coveted luxury for our citizens!

964 AD The influence of Basel and Geneva expand, bringing more territory under our solid control.

AD 966: Dr. Frankenstein reports that his poets, philosophers and wise men have created a Literature worthy of telling the tale of our people's great exploits, and that his priests and philosophers are even now working on a code of Diplomacy, so that unfortunate wars, like the recent ones with Castile and Denmark, will be less likely to happen in the future!

Just to prove we aren't bitter or holding any grudges, Herzog Beinbrech trades Literature and 50 Gold to Denmark for their techniques of using the Stirrup to enhance the effectiveness of their mounted troops... We can now train Horsemen (once we get roads to our herds of Horses, that is).

AD 972: Bern completes the first of our great economic projects by establishing an Amber Trader in the city. (Amber Trader, like all the other Luxury resource traders, is a SW that produces Shipments (flags) every so many turns).

AD 974: Herzog Beinbrech is awoken early one morning by a lout commotion in the streets, accompanied by an equally loud Oom-pah Band. He shakes the sleep out of his head and calls for James "Mac" MacGuiness, his majordomo. When the majordomo arrives, he asks, "What in tarnation is that RACKET out there all about? It's WAY too early for Oktoberfest!"

"Sir," Mac replied, "The citizens of our fine city are extremely pleased with the job you've been doing lately and have decided to hold a feast in your honor..." The majordomo arched an eyebrow and continued in a rather dry tone, "You are, of course, expected to attend, sir, otherwise the whole thing would be pointless."

"Damn, Mac," the Herzog grumbles, "The LEAST they could have done was give me SOME kind of warning! I mean...." His nose twitched as his tirade trails off and he says, "Are those fresh-baked pretzels and Bratwurst I smell, Mac?"

"I believe they are, sir," MacGuiness replies mildly, "Shall I assume you want your best outfit ready when you're done with your bath?"

"You assume correctly! There's some Bratwurst and Pretzels with my name on them out there and possibly a stein of Old Tillman's beer as well!"

The Herzog joined the "We Love the Freiherr Day" festivities that lasted well into the night....

AD 976: A Settler expedition sets out from Basel to claim a hilly spot of land Southwest of St. Gallen, which is almost completely surrounded by Swamps and Desert, but also happens to have access to Tar (strat resource), Wild Game (bonus) and Spices (Lux)... Unfortunately the dismal swamps and barren desert extend to the coast, so the city will have to be inland, meaning that Zürich will remain our sole port for the foreseeable future... (In this mod, Deserts, Mountains, Swamps, Tundra and Volcanoes are unsuitable for building cities on, and on top of that, regular settlers cannot travel THROUGH Swamps or Mountains unless there is a road through them).

Later in the year, word reaches us that the Kingdom of Aragon has begun efforts to establish the Holy Roman Empire in Zaragosa (their capitol)! As if that news wasn't disturbing enough, several Castillian Archer companies are spotted loitering around Basel and Geneva... Thankfully both towns are fairly well defended!

AD 978: Herzog Beinbrech, aware of Castile's proclivity for sneak attacks, allocates gold to rush training of Spear companies in Basel and Geneva (which costs 95 gold each, but better safe than sorry!)

The move is proven unnecessary as the Castillian troops move out of our territory later in the year.

AD 980: Dr. Frankenstein reports that we have now established a set of Diplomatic Protocols to help smooth future relations with other nations, and his crack research teams have started looking into Bridge Building techniques.... Which will be VERY helpful with rapid troop movements throughout the Confederacy, due to all the rivers flowing through our territory.

Now that the option is available, Herzog Beinbrech establishes an embassy in the Aragonese city of Zaragosa, mainly as a means of checking their progress on establishing the Holy Roman Empire.... According to our spy's ambassador's report, it will take them ten times as long to complete it as us... Another embassy is established in the Castillian city of Burgos, and our spy ambassador with Castile reports that Oviedo will require double the time it will take us to complete the Holy Roman Empire, so we've basically got that one in the bag!

AD 984: St. Gallen and Lucerne are finally linked to our trade network... As soon as we get the Gold hooked up, we'll be able to start upgrading our Spearmen to Mercenary Guards (thus, hopefully, establishing the reputation of Swiss Mercenaries early on in this timeline :D)

Some traveling Mummers stop by the Herzog's palace and inform him that the Kingdom of Denmark is trying to establish the Holy Roman Empire in Roskilde!

AD 986: Schwyz's influence expands a second time, giving the Swiss Confederacy a nice, solid core territory.

AD 988: Dr. Frankenstein reports that we now know how to build bridges across all our rivers, so he's going to research growing things on Plantations (Plantation uncovers two bonus and at least two luxury resources... The bonus resources are Cotton and Dates, while the lux resources are Olive Oil and Wine).

Coincidentally, the "We Love the Freiherr" celebration in Schwyz comes to an end at the same time....

AD 990: The Gold deposits outside St. Gallen are FINALLY connected into our trade network, meaning we can finally begin upgrading our Spear companies to Mercenary Guard companies. All Spearmen begin rotating into Schwyz for said upgrade.

As if that wasn't enough good news, a Dye Trader is established in Zürich, giving the Confederacy a much-needed boost to its potential income!

Additionally, Bern sends out a Settler expedition, which heads for the last free spot along Lake Geneva outside Zaragosa's extended borders.

AD 992: Thun is founded in the hills SW of St. Gallen and Geneva is finally connected to our trade network.

AD 996: Dr. Frankenstein reports that his research into Plantation management is complete and his alchemists are now looking into Horse Breeding.

Dates are discovered near Thun, Lucerne and Bern, granting much needed boosts in food and productivity to all three cities. Cotton is discovered near Basel. A source of Wines are found JUST outside St. Gallen's borders....

Later that year, word arrives that Sicily is trying to establish the Holy Roman Empire in Catania.... Good luck, guys!

AD 1000: According to our analysts, Switzerland is now the largest nation in the known world, both in terms of land area and population.

And so this chapter in the history of the Swiss Confederacy comes to an end.

It is my honor to serve the Great Feudal State of Switzerland by taking care of this wonderful hilly town of Basel. (Mind if I convert it to a ski center? I'm a huge fan of downhill skiing. :D)

BTW, it took me a while to found any info about Markgraf to understand what the h*** I am called now.

so much for swiss neutrality ;)

Fitting that you managed to put Geneva next to the lake. It is my honor to have such a beautiful corner of your empire to call home. :hatsoff:

Sure, just as long as you don't get in the way of the Silver mining operations... Which shouldn't be a problem since we've only got silver on two of the many mountains... I figured you Scandinavian types would enjoy the skiing opportunities. :D

Also, Markgraf (Also Margrave) = Marquis (more or less)

so much for swiss neutrality ;)

Hey, they started it! :mischief:

oh btw rammstein ROCKS!!! :)

You aught to like the names I'm giving the Schweitze Marine Schiffen (Swiss Navy Ships), then ;)

Oh, I've also decided to spoiler all my chapters due to the massive amounts of images in this story (should help with loading times)...

Nice story! If I were any good at downloading files, I'd probably get this one and start playing.
