Schweitzes Reich: The Swiss Empire (MeM)

I don't want to hijack HT's story, but yes. I have seen the AI build next to the same active volcano several times in the same game. You can read about it here if you're interested.

That's gotta be some kind of new record for AI stupidity!

I want to apologize for doing such a crappy job running Zurich. I don't know how that Black Plague got into my city. Those Gypsies said all their girls were clean!

Preceding nicely, Hikaro!

i found the problem, my stupid computer wouldn't stop the posting process like it normally does, since i kept adding more smilies

EDIT: Never mind, False Information

P.S. - is this gonna be updated

Is this gonna be updated soon. :(

Patience, young grasshoppah! I've been computer-wrangling the past few days....

Kapitel 6: Stadtstaat
Chapter 6: City State

Spoiler :
AD 1102: The 12th century begins auspiciously, with the Salt Trader in Basel sending a Shipment back to Schwyz.

AD 1104: Dr. Frankenstein announces that his political scientists have worked out the details of establishing each canton as a city-state within the Confederacy, lifting some of the burden of running the nation off the central council in Schwyz while at the same time increasing the freedom of the people and making them happier.

(City State is basically Republic, but with COMMUNAL corruption and 150% worker bonus... I.e. one of the best governments in this mod, even despite the fact that City-States can't build any kind of Forbidden Palace type wonders).

He says that his next project is looking at the stars and establishing a codes of Astrology.

AD 1108: Herzog Benjamin Beinbrech von Schwyz completes his great work, the Book of Kells.

The collection of strategy and weaponsmithing techniques contained therein will likely double the research output of the capitol!

Later on in the year, we hear that Aragon, though thwarted in the race to complete the Book of Kells, decided instead to build the Theodosian Walls in Zaragoza... That will make taking any of their cities very painful, in the event of any future war! (Theodosian Walls = The Great Wall)

AD 1110: The Wool Trader in Bern and the Dye Trader in Zürich send shipments to Schwyz, giving the treasury a much needed boost.

AD 1114: Dr. Frankenstein announces that his alchemists have discovered Astrology, and will now start working on engineering:

This was the signal that the Herzog was waiting for. He summons a meeting of all the leaders of the Swiss Cantons: Graf Marius Schatten von Bern, Markgraf Arexander von Basel, Graf Bucky Rea von Zürich, Comte Sima Qian de Geneva, Comte Gamezrule de Lucerne, Markgraf Snowstar von St. Gallen, Graf Blaze Injun von Thun, Graf Abraxan von Winterthur and Markgraf Dumanios von Minderstadt to announce that he feels the time is right to change the way the Confederacy is run.

The council agrees with few reservations: The Swiss Confederacy has become too large to easily manage under the current feudal system, and the peasants were getting restless... It was time to organize the cantons into semi-autonomous republics known as city-states, which would, in turn, send representatives to the High Council in Schwyz to formulate National policies (such as taxation, maintaining the Army and Navy, etc).

The domestic adviser, Anna Bäuerin, warned that the transition would take anywhere from 5 to 10 years, however the council deemed that the increase in trade and productivity that would result from the new system would be worth it.

Thus it was that the Swiss Confederacy entered into another transitional government... This time, however, thanks to improvements in technology, Herzog Beinbrech was able to draft enough Merchants and Astrologers to rake in 37 Ducats per year, and still keep research into Engineering rolling along.

AD 1118: The Varangian Guard barracks in Schwyz finish training another Varangian Guard unit.

AD 1120: Late in the year, disturbing news arrives that Aragon has started construction of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in some unknown city away from the Aragonese mainland... Apparently the Aragonese have researched Pilgrimage and discovered the Holy Land on some unknown island! (Curse the Spaniards and their +1 movement Lateen Galleys! :()

AD 1122: Acting quickly on this latest news, Herzog Beinbrech trades Crop Rotation to Aragon for Pilgrimage... Even though we don't see the Holy Land anywhere near our borders (this mod is set up so that there will always be one and only one source of Holy Land in the entire map, regardless of size), we can now train Pilgrims, Settlers that can move through swamps, desert and over mountains without roads!

The Herzog then decides to sell Crop Rotation to everyone else before the Aragonese can, and makes quite a few Ducats out of the deal, which should see us through the time of transition.

AD 1124: The transitional period is over! Switzerland has become a TRUE Confederacy now, and the new freedoms granted to the commoners brings a HUGE boost in trade and production nation-wide! Herzog Beinbrech's Title is changed to Großherzog (Grand Duke) to reflect this change in status.

AD 1126: Thanks to the hard work of our highly-motivated construction crews, we now have a land trade route with Denmark... Unfortunately, they've already traded their surplus Olive Oil to someone else. :(

AD 1128: The Wine Trader in Bern sends a Shipment back to Schwyz.

AD 1130: Dr. Frankenstein announces that work on Engineering is complete, so Großherzog Beinbrech assigns Korpskommandant Sephiroth von Niebelheim to help Dr. Frankenstein formulate tactics and weapons suitable for Medieval Combat.

AD 1132: The Amber Trader in Bern and Spice trader in Thun send Shipments back to Schwyz, adding 500 Ducats to the Federal Treasury. In Basel, Markgraf Arexander formally breaks ground for the Leaning Tower, a great project sure to bring fame and happiness to the city! (Leaning Tower has 4 Culture and makes 4 people in the city happy).

AD 1134: Dr. Frankenstein's Astrologers complete construction of a Royal Observatory (SW that boosts science and can only be built in the capitol) in Schwyz... Großherzog Beinbrech insists on messing around with the telescope.....

In the town of Minderstadt, Markgraf Dumanios christens the second ship of the Swiss Navy, the galley SMS Morgenstern. The ship departs after launch on a journey to explore the sea routes near Minderstadt and Thun.

Later in the year, our OTHER ship, the SMS Rosenrot almost causes an international incident when it is forced to seek shelter from a storm in Sicily's coastal waters... King Roger II starts to pitch a fit, but Großherzog Beinbrech offers a Right of Passage agreement, which the King immediately accepts... Now the Rosenrot and Morgenstern can move freely through Sicily's coastal waterways without fear of reprisal... Of course Sicilian Lateen Galleys can do the same, but we aren't overly concerned about that anyways.

AD 1136: In a momentous year for discovery, the SMS Morgenstern rounds the Cape of Sicily, finishing its chore of mapping our entire continent!

AD 1138: Dr. Frankenstein announces that, with the help of Korpskommandant Sephiroth von Niebelheim, we now have a workable treatise on Medieval Combat!

Großherzog Beinbrech then assigns several monks and priests to help the good Doktor develop a system of Theology.

Graf Marius Schatten von Bern begins working on the Bayeaux Tapestry (increases chance of leaders and increases Army value), while all Swordsmen begin reporting to Forges, Stables and the German Principality building to be re-equipped as Men at Arms.

On top of all that, the Gold Mine in St. Gallen sends a shipment back to Schwyz.

AD 1142: Shortly after the transition to the new government, Großherzog Beinbrech, seeing a need for bigger and better facilities for government offices, had ordered construction begun on a Ducal Palace... Construction of which was completed this year:

(Ducal Palace boosts research, luxury and tax output, plus it produces 1 extra trade per trade-producing tile, and can only be built in the capitol city of a City-State).

The expanded Palace not only provided a center for the government and an expanded Council chamber for the High Council, but it also became a center for learning, trade and entertainment as well!

The Varangian Guard even recruited a new unit to help guard the expanded facility. One of Großherzog Beinbrech's first acts after moving his offices to the new Ducal Palace was to contact King Canute of Denmark and begin repatriating Danish Captives taken in the last war.

The Salt Trader in Basel sends another Shipment to Schwyz, while at the OTHER side of the Confederacy, the SMS Rosenrot, somewhat worse for wear, finally makes port in Minderstadt, bringing its great journey of exploration to an end among cheering throngs of Swiss citizens.

Later in the year, word comes via foreign merchants that Castile has begun work on the Bayeaux Tapestry... Hopefully Bern will be able to finish it first!

AD 1144: The last unit of Swordsmen is re-fitted as Men at Arms, completing Korpskommandant Sephiroth's modernization program (for now).

AD 1146: Dr. Frankenstein announces that the priests and Monks working with him have developed a formal method of Theology, so he has decided to discuss improved Marksmanship with Markgraf Arexander der Finne's elite Archer unit.

In Minderstadt, repairs to the SMS Rosenrot are complete, so the ship sets out to explore once more... Hopefully we'll be able to discover some new lands soon!

Later in the year, wandering priests report that Aragon has begun construction of the Notre Dame cathedral in Valencia.

AD 1148: Word arrives through the merchant grapevine that Queen Isabella has begun construction of Notre Dame in Compostela....

AD 1150: This year Großherzog Beinbrech begins construction of the Notre Dame cathedral in Schwyz... According to our "diplomats" in Aragon and Castile, it will take 40 years for Valencia to complete work on Notre Dame, and 100 years for Compostela, whereas Schwyz can build it in 34 years!

The Honey Trader in Bern and the Dye Trader in Zürich send Shipments back to Schwyz.

Some rather disturbing news comes when the Black Death strikes St. Gallen... Markgraf Snowstar, along with the city Garrison take to the plains until the disease runs its course!

Thus this chapter in the history of the Swiss Confederacy comes to a close.

Hurrah!!! Update!!! :goodjob:

It is my pleasure to build the Leaning Tower of Basel to entertain our people and to bring more income for our great Confederacy. And I am happy to help Dr. Frankenstein to research better equipment and tactics for our archers.

Great update! :goodjob:

Well, the archers NEED upgrading.... They're the only Viking Age units I have left in the Swiss Army.

Kapitel 7: Verrat!
Chapter 7: Treachery!

Spoiler :
AD 1154: The Wool Trader in St. Gallen send a Shipment back to Schwyz. Großherzog Beinbrech oversees the repatriation of the last Danish POWs this year, making King Canute rather happy. (Attitude goes from annoyed to Polite!)

AD 1156: Dr. Frankenstein announces that he's developed a system of Marksmanship training, with the help of Markgraf Arexander's Archers.

Korpskommandant Sephiroth von Niebelheim begins upgrading our Archer companies to Peasant Crossbow companies, starting with Arexander's Archers. Dr. Frankenstein begins researching Edumacation next.

AD 1160: Word arrives that Castile is attempting to build the Leaning Tower in Leon, the Sicilians have started building it in Palermo (their capitol) and the Aragonese have started construction of the same building in Tarragona... Fortunately, Basel already has a good head start on it. :D

AD 1162: The Plague hits Schwyz.... Großherzog Beinbrech moves all government offices to his private retreat in the mountains outside Schwyz until the plague runs its course. For some reason the Großherzog has taken to calling his retreat "Camp David"....

AD 1164: Dr. Frankenstein goes to the Großherzog Beinbrech's hunting lodge in "Camp David" to announce that he's finished developing techniques of Edumacation, and he is directed to begin research into Holy Warfare... Crusaders will be our most powerful foot units for the foreseeable future!

In the meantime, the Black Plague spreads to Zürich, no doubt thanks to merchants traveling the Zürich/Schwyz/St. Gallen trade route...

Near the end of the year, King Roger II of Sicily sends envoys offering a trade deal where they give us Furs in exchange for some of our Amber and 3 Ducats per year... Großherzog Beinbrech is only too happy to accept!

AD 1166: Another Varangian Guard unit is recruited by the Varangian Guard HQ in Schwyz, on top of which the last of our Archer companies are finally upgraded to Peasant Crossbowmen.

AD 1168: Queen Isabella manages to complete the Bayeaux Tapestry in Burgos, beating us to it! Graf Marius, not to be discouraged, simply switches the current project into founding the Sorbonne University instead. (Sorbonne Univ doubles research output and grants 7 culture per turn!)

AD 1170: The Black Death finally dies out in all the affected cities, allowing all troops and government officials to return. To celebrate, Graf Bucky Rea von Zürich christens our third Galley, the SMS Sonne.

AD 1172: Dr. Frankenstein announces that we've completed research into Holy Warfare, and that he and Korpskommandant Sephiroth will begin research into Armorcrafting, which will allow us to upgrade our Mercenary Guards into Armored Spearmen.

As if that wasn't enough good news in one year, the Spice Trader in Thun and Amber Trader in Bern send Shipments back to Schwyz.

To top all of this off, construction of the Leaning Tower of Basel is completed this year as well!

The citizens of Basel go wild with joy!

AD 1176: Lucerne finishes organizing a Pilgrim party, which is sent to Zürich to board the SMS Sonne... Hopefully the ship will be able to find some unclaimed land somewhere!

Großherzog Beinbrech meets with Queen Isabella and trades City State to them for Ecclesiatiocracy.

Graf Buckyrea breaks ground for a new Royal Port in Zürich, which will not only allow us to upgrade our ships and train veteran crews, but will also provide a significant boost to productivity, fishing and ocean trade (Royal Port is a SW that produces vet sea units and also increases food, trade and shields in water).

AD 1178: A Fur Trader is established in St. Gallen to process and sell the furs that are arriving from Sicily.

The Gold Mine in St. Gallen sends a shipment of 250 Ducats worth of Gold back to Schwyz.

AD 1182: Dr. Frankenstein and Korpskommandant Sephiroth announce that they've worked out the details of Advanced Armorcrafting, and that they will now try to establish a Code of Chivalry, which should improve our Knights' combat abilities.

All Mercenary Guards begin reporting to the nearest Forge or Stable (or the capitol) for issue of new equipment and retraining as Armored Spearmen.

The Salt Trader in Basel sends another Shipment back to Schwyz.

AD 1186: Großherzog Beinbrech wins the race for Notre Dame! Construction of the famous Cathedral is competed in Schwyz this year.

(Notre Dame makes 3 people happy in the city that builds it and 1 person happy in every other friendly city as well as producing 7 culture per turn!)

Not one to leave grass growing under his feet, the Großherzog begins construction of the Charles University (unique wonder for Switzerland that boosts research by 50% and halves unit upgrade costs)... Schwyz is rapidly becoming a great center of learning.

The Wine Trader in Bern sends a Shipment back to Schwyz. Lucerne completes training of our first Crusader company. (in addition to having 5 att and 3 def, they also can build Fortresses).

Late in the year, in what appears to be a jealous fit of rage due to losing the Leaning Tower to us, King Roger II sends several companies of Sicilian Swordsmen to attack Basel!

Yes, despite HAVING A RIGHT OF PASSAGE AND A TRADE AGREEMENT ACTIVE, the Sicilians declare war on us! One of the Sword companies manages to wipe out a Knight company in Basel before being driven back!

Foreign Adviser Hans Klugschwätzer, upon hearing the news says to Großherzog Beinbrech, "What great fools, Großherzog! Their diplomatic reputation will NEVER recover from this idiocy!"

"Oh, you're quite right!" Großherzog Beinbrech growls in reply, "I'm going to wipe them off the face of the earth as an object lesson to our OTHER neighbors!"

AD 1188: Bern completes construction of the Sorbonne University and Zürich completes construction of the Royal Port!

In addition, our last Mercenary Guard unit is upgraded to an Armored Spearman unit, and not a moment too soon, either!

A company of Men at Arms wipe out a Sicilian Spearman unit that landed outside Thun, while the Warriors accompanying them are wiped out by a Knight company.

One of our first Crusader companies wipes out a Sicilian Swordsman Northeast of St. Gallen.

A Knight company from Basel wipes out the Swordsmen that killed our Knights last year. All offensive troops march out Basel and St. Gallen to attack the Sicilian town of Tropea next year!

Late in the year, a Sicilian counterattack on our invading army forces a company of Knights to retreat.

AD 1190: Dr. Frankenstein and Korpskommandant Sephiroth submit their final draft code of Chivalry and begin working on establishing Military Orders.

The Honey Trader in Bern and the Dye Trader in Zürich send shipments back to Schwyz... The money from the sale of the goods is used to hurry troop training and armament projects around the Confederacy!

Another Varangian Guard unit is recruited in Schwyz and all Knights begin reporting for upgrade to Chivalric Knights (Chivalric Knights have the same stats as Crusaders, but they also have 2 movement)

Swiss troops descend on the Sicilian border town of Tropea, with a Crusader company, Arexander's Archers (veteran Peasant Crossbowmen) and a Man at Arms company wiping out three companies of Sicilian Spearmen in the initial thrust. A Sicilian Man at Arms company forces a company of our Knights to retreat, but another Knight company runs them down and slaughters them to the last man!

Tropea is captured! Großherzog Beinbrech declares that Tropeas current location is unsustainable, due to both its proximity to Basel as well as the fact that the surrounding terrain is not favorable with food production. Therefore, the citizens are ordered to begin packing up their belongings and will move to the Silver-bearing hills to the West, which will give them access to the unworked vinyards (Wines) just outside of St. Gallen's influence as well as to some rich grasslands... No wonder the town had such a low population!

Another Knight company attacks some Sicilian Men at Arms outside the city, but is forced to retreat.

Later in the year, that same group of Men at Arms, despite taking some casualties from our Knight company, decided to attack Tropea, and end up getting slaughtered by our Crusader company defending the city.

AD 1192: Arexander's Archers wipe out a company of Sicilian Swordsmen outside of Tropea.

AD 1194: Schwyz completes construction of the Charles University!

The Wool Trader in St. Gallen sends a shipment back to Schwyz.

Korpskommandant Sephiroth reports that all Knights, except for the company on board the SMS Sonne have been upgraded to Chivalric Knights.

The new class of Chivalric Knights proves their worth by stomping a Sicilian Archer company outside Catania into the ground, earning a promotion to Veteran status.

AD 1196: That same company of veteran Chivalric Knights wipes out a unit of Sicilian Spearmen outside Catania, destroying the Border Fort (radar tower) they were defending, paving the way for the rest of our troops to sack the city next year!

AD 1198: Dr. Frankenstein and Korpskommandant Sephiroth announce that they have worked out the details for establishing Military Orders and begin work on a system of Heraldry.

Swiss Chivalric Knights hit Catania, wiping out both companies of defending Spearmen and capturing the city, along with a worker party!

Upon entering the city, our troops discover a detestable Slave Market in the city! (Slave Markets are available with Barter and increase production, but one of my "variant" rules is that I will never have anything to do with slavery or such). General Dumanios, commander of the Chivalric Knights that took the city, orders the abomniable place torn down, all the slaves freed and has the slave traders that ran the establishment hung from the town's Gallows!

For his prompt action to end this practice of detestable tyranny, Großherzog Beinbrech promotes General Dumanios to the status of a Freiherr (Baron) and grants him rule of the provisional Canton of Catania.

To the Northeast, a second attack column wipes out a company of Sicilian Swordsmen and dismantles a Border Fort outside Napes... Naples will hopefully fall next turn!

Near the end of the year, a Sicilian Lateen Galley attacks the SMS Morgenstern and is sunk by the Morgenstern's brave crew!

AD 1200: Großherzog Beinbrech begins work to establish the Knights Hospitaller in Schwyz (produces free, powerful Hospitallers every 8 turns :D)

In the North, our Chivalric Knights wipe out the three companies of Spearmen defending Naples and the city is captured, along with 31 Ducats, two Catapults and three Worker parties!

General Sparthage, commander of the Chivalric Knights that captured the city, is granted the title of Freiherr and is appointed as governor of the provisional canton of Naples.

Freiherr Sparthage puts the captured catapults to immediate use, bombarding a company of Men at Arms to the North, scoring a few solid hits. A veteran Chivalric Knight company finishes them off and is promoted to Elite status.

And so it is, with Sicily getting its butt handed to it on a silver platter that this chapter comes to a close.

Hey man I'm subscribed. Hope it's as good as "Triumph of the Boers".

I have a question is there anyway to get a screenie of the tech tree for this mod?

I'll try to post some right before my next update, but that will have to wait until after Finals (next week)... I'm in the "end of semester" rush right now, plus I gotta go to Pittsburgh this weekend.

AD 974: Herzog Beinbrech is awoken early one morning by a lout commotion in the streets, accompanied by an equally loud Oom-pah Band. He shakes the sleep out of his head and calls for James "Mac" MacGuiness, his majordomo.
Honor's going to be very upset with you, you know. :p Haven't read past that post, but it looks awesome.

Honor's going to be very upset with you, you know. :p Haven't read past that post, but it looks awesome.

Glad somebody got that little reference... Aside from Eric Flint's 1632 series, David Weber's Honor Harrington series is my favorite series of Science Fiction novels... As a matter of fact, it was Eric Flint's short story, From the Highlands, which was set in the Honorverse, that got me into the Honor Harrington series in the first place (as a matter of fact, most of my favorite novels in the series involve the "dynamic duo" of Victor Cachat an Anton Zilwicki... I.e. Crown of Slaves and Torch of Freedom....)

HT: always enjoy your stories! I understand that Real Life (tm) does sometimes get in the way of your massive responsibility to entertain others ;).

I love the 1632 series as well and have enjoyed them in hard cover and electronic format via the BaenCD sets. I have yet to really delve into the Honor series, but I do anticipate living in the Honorverse for a while as there are many electronically available there. One of my other favorite series is the Royal Cinnabar Navy (RCN) series by David Drake. Well worth the read.

Any chance you will continue your AOI Boers story? or is that one done?
