Scientific great leader question

Trying to get scientific leaders on Deity is tough! I am developing a strategy for it, I think Seafaring + Agriculture, or Comm. + Agriculture maybe be the best traits.

So my question:
What if you finish researching on the same turn as an AI opponent? For example, you have 1 turn to complete writing. You look and nobody else in the world has it... you press the space bar, and you discover it. Then, you go talk to the AI to trade writing and now 2 or three AI players have writing. Can you get a SGL in this fact pattern?

This happens so much on Deity! It is maddening!!! Wondering if I got a shot at the SGL in this case or not.

I don't have any idea whether or not an SGL is possible (since I don't know the precise rules for SGLs), but in such circumstances you are certainly the "first" to discover the tech (with several AIs just a few seconds behind). The human player's commerce calculation (which goes to science) comes before the AIs' calculation, just as shield calculation does -- if you ever have a chance to move units and any of your cities is 1 turn from a wonder, then you are assured of being the first to build a wonder (barring some catastrophic loss of productivity like civil disorder, enemy-occupied shield tiles, etc.). In other words, if you and 7 other AI civs all have 1 turn to go to complete Sun Tzu's, you'll be the one whi builds it and they'll be the ones who cascade to other wonders, just as if you and the same 7 civs are one turn from a tech, you'll be the "first" one to discover it, even though everyone discovers it during the same turn.

If anyone has an example of getting an SGL in the situation I described, would you please post a save game?

Katt's post sounds right logically, but if want to know if I am having a "chance" at an SGL in these circumstances or not. I sure hope I am considering how often it happens!

I must say that it is also annoying because I dont get to trade the tech to the AIs that research it the same turn They often manage to give it to other AI players so that by the time I have a chance to trade I cant get much for it

Hi guys - I just want to report that I am becoming more and more convinced that you cant get a scientific leader in this situation. I still havent gotten one when this happens - and it happens alot on deity!!!

Well given that you don't have a scientific Civ, you only have a 3% chance of getting an SGL each time...
That means that even if you discovered half of all the techs first (that's 42, so good job on Deity ), you have a 28% chance of getting NO SGL...

I think it CAN be possible to get an early SGL on diety. I just finished a game that was pretty peaceful until I discovered maths (which makes for high AI tech pace). The AI beat me to it by 2 turns
Early warfare (if you can pull it off) combined with sci gambits on the lesser valued (by the AI) techs is the key here imhso.
Also, make sure your civ has a second level tech to do the gambit on. Maths or writing seem to be the preferred techs to go for here.

Edit: I'm thinking Byzanthium may be a good starting civ.

Thanks for the tips, I still want to keep my thread focused on the question. I dont need tips on statistics, though, when I say I believe this to be unlikely I only say that after experiencing this situation many many times on Deity without getting a leader.

if after u discover a tech, and u go trading with other civs, but other civs already have the tech, then they discover it first... if no one has the tech, n u r able to trade with them on the tech, then u r the discoverer...
