It occured to me that the upgrade path for these units ends for no particular reason...I have read threads about people wanting some kind of special forces unit and it seems logical that this is the unit to go there....Explorer should upgrade to a special forces unit that can pillage and perform spy operations (steal tech, sabotage -invisible like the stealth units in the medevil Scenarios-
I can see why calvary is the end of the horse upgrade...but a
scout/explorer/conquistidor....perfect for Special ops ...

Why. The American Cav now ride around in choppers. Why cant CIVs.

Actually the American Cav now ride around in either tanks or helicopters(e.g. the 7th Armoured Cavalry division)

Explorers upgrade into Agents into my game. (Hidden nationality units that ignore movement costs for jungle, forest, marshes, and moutains.)

well a horse is pretty specific...air cav and tank-as -cav (operational they are similiar) however they are just titles ...but i can see the argument...just seems like "conquistidor/scout/explorer..those type of personalities would probably be the type that would be like in the green beret or something to that effect

how about a mobile radar unit 2 movement, treats all terrain as roads, 0.6.2 treats all terrain as roads, available with radio? i'm hesitant to put in that 6 defense, but i believe radar bieng able to see units coming would give it a huge advantage, i'm also hesitant to put in the "treats all terrain as roads," but i don't want a unit to lose something in the upgrade path

in one of my games i actually did mod it so that calvary upgraded to tanks

I think that it should stop with the explorer unit. I mean there wasn't really any need to explore the world after this period in time. It had almost all been mapped by then. Just because you use it for pillaging and things of the sort doesn't mean it is supposed to be used that way. they are a means of exploration not pillaging.

OTOH I do see you're point, but don't have the explorer upgrade just make it a different unit. Oh well I'm tired of typing so that's all from me.

Most of Africa had not been mapped until the 1800's. So maybe an industrial age explorer unit of some sorts.

I always thought that the recon ability of fighters repaced this...

The upgrade paths have very little to do with realism, but is much more based on game play balance. If cavalry could upgrade to tanks (which many have suggested), it would offset the game balance totally. The first that becomes able to build tanks will then make sure to have lots of cavalry ready for upgrading, and then in an instant a tank army of 50+ tanks.

Gotta agree with TheNiceOne.

In addition, Explorers, inexplicably, pillage way better than most modern units, and doesn't cost alot, so it doesn't really get obsolete in that role. Sure, an army of Mod Armor pillages even better, but I can think of better uses for that monster.

IMHO, Explorers are useless. I've never built one.

When they are available, I know the entire map, all civs, and sometimes I still have a couple of scouts for any "spy" task.

And if their only purpose is to pillage, then they should be called Pillagers, instead of Explorers... :)

Scout-Explorers-Satelites :) :) :) Seriously, the uselesness of the satelite tech displays the absence of further scouting-units

pillagers.. I mean explorers are indispensable to my attack force. Hit all their lux's and strat. resources.. and voila.. your opponent is completely neutered.
