[BNW] Screen going black

At random times while playing DX11 Civ V the screen will go black and the computer will have to be rebooted to get any screen display back. This just started 2-3 months ago and I think it is related to pop ups occurring while in DirectX mode. System:
Windows 7 Ultimate
I-7 4790 (not overclocked)
16gb ran
EVGA GTX 980
Samsung EVO 850 1tb
onboard realtek sound (all sound turned off)

All drivers and updates up to date.
Any ideas?
