Large world, archipelago with smallest landsize, Byzantine.
Powerful combination. Curraghs are cheap and can be built from the beginning. With seafaring, that's a 3 move explorer unit. Get the Lighthouse, and dromons are excellent exploring units (5 moves in the ancient era!). At the end of the ancient era the Byzantines own 2/3 of their starting landmass, and 5 other smaller islands with no warmongering. I also have contacts with every other civ just as I moved out of ancient age. The Iroquois come in second with number of contacts: 3.
The extra commerce, when every city is coastal city, is uber. I was making over 100 gold per turn on despotism during the middle of the ancient age. Used my normal city placement that I'd use with non-seafaring civs, I'd estimate nearly twice as much income compared to a civ without seafaring.
Harbors! With 5-move trading range, all of my islands are connected for trading. Good thing too; I had to snag iron from another continent. Went and camped the German's dye before they could build a city close enough.
Scientific helps too; I had a scientific leader just waiting to rush the Great Lighthouse if needed. He wasn't; waited for Statue of Zeus, then Great Library. Finally rushed Sun Tzu's when I got feudalism for entering a new age. Only went for Great Library for the culture mainly: only got monarchy. With 100 gold per turn, it doesn't take long to buy all the techs.
EDIT because I wrote before completing my coffee.
