Seeing as Silk and the TH series are out for the summer, I thought I'd try my hand on starting a SG myself. Not quite original, but hopefully a bit of fun nonetheless.

Goal of the game is to win using espionage to the extreme. Self-research is not completely forbidden, but strongly discouraged.

    Variant rules:
    - We can tech the basic worker techs & Alphabet. After that science slider must be set to zero and espionage tech must be set as high as reasonably possible.
    - Espionage buildings should be build before gold/science buildings
    - Spy specialists should be assigned before merchants/scientists
    - We can only bulb/start research on techs that aren't researched allready (as far as we can know).
    - We cannot build the Pyramids (adopting Representation later in the game is allowed, but with representation early, the game will probably end up as a SE, even with the restrictions imposed)
    - Great Spies must be used for spy-like activities (no bulbing/GA for GSpies)
    - Bombarding and other uses of espionage-points are encouraged over other non-spy options (ie, switch civics through espionage, instead of asking it, city revolt instead of bombarding).
    - We cannot focus all points on one AI untill we can see the demographics of all AI's we've met (and we must keep enough points on the other AI's to keep seeing the demographics.

    Difficulty: Monarch
Leader: to be discussed (organized trait would be nice)
Map: Probably pangea, but open for discussion (as is the size of the map)
    Speed: Epic
    Patch: 3.17

Other settings can be discussed as well.

I'm interested, of course, but that patch note is the newest patch, right? One of the other SGs I'm in decided not to patch, so I'm not really sure what's going to happen if I download the patch myself.

If that keeps me out of the game, I'll just lurk it.

No, it is the old patch (I'm playing in another SG which is using 3.17 and I'm playing/modding FFH which isn't updated to 3.19 yet).

If you install the new patch you can load 3.17 games just fine, but people playing 3.17 can't open saves from the 3.19 patch (so we can decide at a later date to switch over to 3.19 without problems).

I am intrigued by this variant...

Put me down as a possibility.
I'll give some other people time to join in.
If later on you need me to fill out the roster and would like me on the team then slot me in!

I'll be following this one either way!

Proving my wishywashiness yet again...I have changed my mind.

Ok, I've added you to the roster, one (or two) no spots left.

Which leader do we want? And what map settings are we going to use? I personally favor large, but I'm not sure how other peoples computers can handle those, so I'd be willing to go for standard as well.

Sumerian Ziggurant is great early source for espionage points, but then again Philosophical leader would get those Great Spies out so much sooner. Peter of Russia (phi/exp) would go nicely with the theme :)

I have no clear preference on map type and large size is ok for me. Personally I like the layout of Big and Small maps.

We could always mix and match leaders and civs, or is that adding too much to the variant? Or is it just too cheap? Ha ha.

I'm pretty sure that I can handle Large maps, though what script are we using? Something random?

I don't really care about leaders too much, but part of me wants to use Gandhi or some other meek little guy.

Yeah I'm fine with the Large Map so thats no problem.

Although the Petey crew should be very familiar with the Large sized Big and Small Map.

I'm not an expert with the maps but something a little different would be nice.
    Perhaps Lakes or Inland Sea???

I'm game for any leader...Gandhi does sound good though.
He's meek and you wouldn't suspect him of being a manipulative person.
Plus his UU is awesome and the UB is a beefed up jail that gives us 2 happies along with the spying benefits.

I hardly ever play large maps, but I think my computer should be able to handle them...

How about Frederick, to throw in another one? Philosophical and organized if I'm not mistaken, nice combo for a spy game I think. And panzers to run over everybody if all else would fail. :)

I have no preference though if we are going for the GW (assuming) someone that starts with mining would be a plus.

Do we count Masonry as basic worker tech? :p

@norvin:Good call on the mining bit...that will be useful without access to stone.

@meiz: I assumed that if a worker can utilize the tech then we can research it.

If this is the case then these are the early techs that we can...well...tech:
    The Wheel
    Agriculture
    Hunting
    Mining
    Pottery
    Animal Husbandry
    Masonry
    Bronze Working
    Iron Working
    Fishing???

Then later on you get into the specialized techs like Monarchy for Wineries, Calendar for Plantations, Metal Casting for Workshops...etc.

I think these techs should be unresearchable according to the non research rules.
If its an ancient era tech then I think we should be able to research it.

I also believe that we should be able to research Alphabet since it enables the building of spy units.

EDIT:We will need to allow teching of Writing too...since we can't get to Alpha without it.

we should definitely be able to self researche alpha, the variant rules say as much :)

I wouldn't define too precisely which are the worker techs and which not. It should be played in the spirit of the game to go alpha as soon as reasonably possible. If we start next to 4 clams I say we can research fishing for workboats. Just get soon to alpha and start stealing from there. Masonry should be researched soon though :) If we miss the GW the variant will be a bit painful...
