I was wondering if some of you would be willing to share your 'sequence of event,' i.e. those first few orders you issues during those critical early years in a game.

I play as Catherine (Russia) on prince level. My 'SOE' goes like this:

warrior
settler (2nd city)
worker
settler (3rd city)

What do you guys do? I'm frustrated because I can never seem to get ahead. Maybe I'll post a game for feedback.

Warrior.

Bar (I don't let it finish)

Once pop is up:
I whip a worker + I steal a worker

Bar again until pop is back up.

Whip a settler.

I typically only make 2 cities.

1. I start with a warrior if it takes 8 turns
If making a warrior and worker both take 15 I generally go with the worker first

2. I build a warrior or worker (which everone i didnt build)

3. I then build an archer

4. Archer (make him find a good spot to build)

5. settler (go build the second city)

6. another archer for defence

7. Stonehenge

Start with warrior or scout if available, then build another one.
If forest nearby, worker, research BW. If not, settler, research Pottery.
Then worker if settler was built first or vice-versa if worker is already built.
If Copper located nearby, hookup and produce nothing but Axemen, not Archers. If no copper near, attempt to go for IW and cottage spam on floodplains + mine hills and build archers as Barbs will start appearing. Second city produces Stonehedge, Axemen/Swords hunt other Civs or Barbs, pillage, capture workers and kill.

i think it's a bad habit to have a predefinite SoE (like you call it)

And you cannot think about building without techs.
what good is a worker if you're isabella? (start tech are fishing and mysticism)

I agree that is a bad habit to have a set of rules that you have to follow at the beggining of a game. The sequence I posted is something similar to what I would do, but every game is diifernt. You have differnt leaders, techs, land, ect. So to have a predetrmined SoE is not a very smart plan. When I play as a nation that gets fishing a the start my fist move will sometimes be a fishing boat. So to say that you have to stick to a predetirmined plan is stupid.

now that it is clear that you shall not stick to a predetermined plan, here are some of my usuals:

(Archipelago excuded)
warrior first for worker robbery
at this point, the city is size 2, and i've researched some useful worker tech
then if i met more than one neighbour, warrior 2 (more robbery!),
else, i go for a worker (blehhh : unsuccessful robbery)
then i let the city grow to size 3 or chop/whip a settler
hooking bronze if available
then you may see anything
1)
axes (loads)/spears (1/2)
war,
land grabbing
infra building,
2)
library building, growing to size 4, 2 scientists specialists => academy
building settlers + axes
3)
going for religion spreading (meaning priesthood -> CoL through Oracle, building monasteries, then missionaries and open borders to flood the neighbours)
4)
going for alphabet straight, no BW researched, trade all you can

5)
?anything that comes to mind

My biggest flaw is i really dislike building workers.
So i need to capture them, or i end up with only 2/3 workers for 5/6 cities.
I'll work on this with my shrink ;)

Initial builds depend basically on resources in fat cross balanced with the benefits of early exploration. If agric/husbandry/mining resources available then I'd build a worker first (usually) while researching the tech then warrior, settler. If no resources then probably scout, warrior, settler.

early BO ?
hmm mainly depends of your capital site.

First every single one ought to have at least 1 scout.
If you started with a scout you MUST get a warrior ASAP for worker rob, there no choice here.
If you started with a warrior some option can be explored :
- Is your site balanced enough to have a good city at the very begining ? (at least 1 comm ressource + 2 good production sites + enough food). Affirmative ? then go for a warrior and get a scout ASAP (anyway hunting leads to archery which you might need greatly before barbs pop). dont loose time with worker consideration : your city can grow, you can concentrate on religious & military techs.
- Good spot too are coastal city with at least 2 fishing ressources (fish for instance). there go on for wotk boat (eventually build a warrior while waiting for fishing). why ? this will allow your city to grow extremely fast, to produce a reasonable amount of comm and the best point is that food counts as production when building worker/settler. So your city should soon reach its max happyness size and go on for work/settler spam with a regret du to growth stop.
- U did your way on a good hill that gives you +2food +2hammer for you city. You might reasonnably have the working tile giving you +3food or +2food +1hammer. This is the only times when building a worker first appear acceptable (2 + 3 = 5, worker cost 90 in epic thats only 18 turns).

And in most of the game, no particular spot, assure early exploration (2 scout + 2 warrior) so you can get many hut and rob 1 or 2 workers. Go for techs that match your ressources (remember your site is poor, you must improve it asap) so you can get at least 1 other capital (remember we are in the common case when your capital is not so sexy... so take your neighboor one, it looks better ;) )
