I'm not one to jump on the "I hate Steam" bandwagon, but after picking up a copy of Civ tonight at Walmart I find that I can't install and play the game. Steam says it's not released. To heck it isn't! I've got it in my hands. But no, I have to wait for some arbitrary time for Steam to "unlock" the game I currently have physical possession of.

Thanks.

Go rant in my Steam rage thread, Mkay?

It is officially released tomorrow morning in North America and later this week everywhere else. Boxes may be sold earlier, who knows.

By my clock it's 40 minutes in to 9/21. That's two hours ahead of Steam headquarters in PST time. They're showing the game won't be unlocked for another 9 hours. That's well beyond midnight PST as well. Little peeved I bought a game legitimately on it's release date and can't install it. Never had this problem with any other software.

So technically you can install it?

You sir just wasted a minute of my life. I demand satisfaction, therefore I challenge you to a duel.

Speaking Walmart, I once talked a cashier into giving me a free PS3 with a coupon I found online.

So technically you can install it?

Negative. It says my game can't be installed because it is not released yet. However it's well in to the 21st and I have a retail copy in my hands. Apparently I have to wait 9 hours for Steam to decide it's acceptable for me to use the software I purchased.

You're upset because Walmart released it earlier than they were instructed to?

Another 8 hours and 12 minutes to go before it's 'officially' released then you'll be able to play as much as you like.

Assuming that Steam unlocks it at the time that 2K says they are supposed to. It wouldn't be the first time for Steam to delay the unlock by many hours.

The release date is 9/21. It's 9/21. How is that releasing it before they're supposed to?

Yep, that's just like the last time I bought a retail copy of a Steam required game. Once Valve says you can play you can finish an install and play, not before then. Luckily, you are in the US and so only have to wait a few hours. I have to wait days.

The release date is 9/21 at 10EDT, not Midnight.

I can't say where you live but where i am , it's not even 11PM on the 20th, and walmart released it early as was shown in some other threads here since the 'official' release time is 10EDT on the 21st and we're still unfortunately a little over 8 hours away.

Use your key to referrer the game to steam and download the game in advance, it will be playable when it its released then.

Also you pay for a license to play, so there very concept of buying the game is one that is not accurate. Owned by steam indeed.

Brota, pics our it did not happen.

I too was sold this game from wal-mart thinking I could play right away. No where on the box does it mention the release time nor did the wal-mart associate have a clue. Firaxis needs to do a better job informing its vendors of release times.

Lets defend steam and arbitrary release times even when people PAID for a game and holds it in their hand, because we want to be unique and have different opinions from the majority.

People like that are so tiring to listen to / read.
Its always the same. They jump to the "rescue", ready to defend anything no matter how ridiculous it is, as long as more than 2 thirds of the replies has been in favor of the topic starter.

Make a thread about how diarrhea sucks, someone will reply and argue for why its tasty, just to be different.
^^

It's ridiculous and uneccessary to not be allowed to use the product you already paid for, because of an online countdown. Period. Fact. Agree or be gone, its not an opinion, its fact.

The game isn't officially released yet. Regardless of what Walmart did.
Just calm the heck down and wait like everyone else.
