Setting up a mic

Hi all,
I'm setting up a mic to use with Ventrilo.

I got an Altec Lansing headset, and apart from telling me to plug it in it offers no instruction.

Anyways, I'm trying to get the mic working and windows help is telling me to go to places that don't exist.

Any pointers?

Try all the plugs in the back until one works?

In sound options make sure you set it to use a mic. You might need to change the audio properties to do that. Usually you can do this from the control panel.
