Hi
I have used CIV IV Beyond the Sword for many years but always with the ‘default’ start. Out of interest today I looked into some of the options that I had never used, decided that I was not interested, and closed the game.

Now when I start I am faced with a few marines and a settler – not quite what I am used to! None of the screen icons seem to react and I have re-booted in the hope of clearing things - to no avail.

I would appreciate a pointer as to how to get back to the base game.

Thanks in advance...

You likely set the starting Era to "Modern".

To reset this, go to "Custom Game", set the starting Era to "Ancient", and START the game. (I presume this is what you mean by "the base game") This will change the entry in the .ini file that saves your settings for persistency between games. (AFAIK the .ini file is only updated when starting a game)

Alternatively you can go directly into the CivilizationIV.ini file and change the Era entry to ERA_ANCIENT:
Code:
; Era options are ERA_ANCIENT/ERA_CLASSICAL/ERA_MEDIEVAL/ERA_RENAISSANCE/ERA_INDUSTRIAL/ERA_MODERN
Era = ERA_ANCIENT

This file should be linked to by a "Civ4Config" link in your main Beyond the Sword folder, i.e. the one containing the executable. (This file is typically located in the /My Games/BtS folder. I think this varies between installations.)
