SGOTM 01 - V Q

Well, right now FDR doesn't have Calendar, so we could trade it to him ... however, I don't know how long that lasts, somehow I suspect he'll have it within 15 turns. Sugar will be available for us once Moscow expands next turn (you don't need the tech in order to take advantage of plantations). I'm wondering if maybe we should switch to Mono so that we can do OR once we capture Yakutsk and convert to Hinduism.

I'd check with Gahndi every once in a while to see if he'll gift us a tech...

BTW Cathy has Calendar and Monotheism... if you want to strip her tech tree in exchange for letting her live 10 turns longer on a single city. Given our current economy - I almost think the delay in removing her might be worth the turns saved on research. Thoughts?

Maquis said he'd be angry with me if I didn't eliminate Cathy...I don't want to make Maquis angry ...

Well... a 10-turn peace treaty still gives you 5 turns to take her out... :mischief:

:twitch: ... is that a challenge?!? Are you willing to possibly forego the Golden Laurels and let me play my turn in that manner? If so, I will gladly take up the gauntlet.

Dont think we are actually in the running anymore, laurel wize....

Picking up the techs if she is willing, will give us a leg up.... On the short term anyway... Dont know about the longer whole....

To bad about that Indian city landing there....

If I take the challenge, one of two things will happen:

In Turn 1 I attack Novgorod. Regardless of whether I'm successful, I make peace immediately afterwards for at least Mono and Calendar. I'll then trade Calendar to FDR.

Here's where the paths diverge:
1) If I take Novgorod, I can move the remaining troops to a position near Yakutsk and wait for the Peace Treaty to expire (you better believe there will be galleys involved). I can then start building up infrastructure and hopefully focusing on catching up in the tech race.

2) If I don't take Novgorod, I'm going to have to focus more on troops builds because we don't have enough troops at this point to take both cities in 10 turns. There will be whipping. And there will be a good chance it sets us back so far that the laurels go out of reach.

So there's definitely a high-risk/reward scenario here. I will play the turns as above if I'm given "permission" to do so...

Just to add a twist to my offering. We need to keep an eye on her and make sure that she doesn't send out a settler on a galley to another island site!

Heh, and you have my permission to do whatever you think best! Course my permission amounts to >< as compared to the rest of this "expert" group.

Well I don't think I meant to put it forth as a challenge I was merely pointing out something that was possible...

And by no means do you need "permission" to play out your turnset however you see fit... If you want to attack Norvogrod, be my guest! I think I had left 3 axes there, vs. one longbow? I was thinking that would be odds in our favor? Again, if you don't think this is enough to take the city, then wait for more reinforcements.

There's a big part of me that doesn't want to give Cathy any more time... Since she can build LB's, why give her 10 turns to build one more in her last city?? (giving her 3 or more there!)

It's just a matter of how bad we want her techs. We can probably research Mono in what, 2-3 turns? Calandar in 10? Don't know if it's worth it...

You have it reversed; the 3 axes vs the 1 longbow is actually not going to happen--too difficult without a catapult. It's the other city I'd be going for (defended by 2 longbows, iirc).

The other advantage for doing it is trading Calendar to FDR who doesn't have it yet.

The more I look at it, the more I like this gamble. If we succeed, we'll get a nice push. If we fail, it'll suck, but it won't be catastrophic.

Sorry about not leaving one of the cats there... I though I had the defenses bombarded down all the way?? (I didn't think a suicide cat is needed with only one defender... no one to collateral dmg)

You did. But even with defense at 1%, the Axe only has a 0.8% chance of winning. Effectively I need to suicide at least 1 Cat and 1 Axe to have a chance of winning--and that's just a guess. Obviously I could suicide a different troop, but I'm anticipating Cathy adding another defender there in the next couple turns.

1 Cat and 1 Axe to have a chance of winning

Just curious, is it any better to suicide one cat and one axe, than to suicide 2 axes? (Not saying you want to do it this way) Would the Cat have a chance to do more damage to the LB? Both units are STR 5, does the cat add collateral dng when there is only one unit?

Cat has withdrawing ability, that's really what I'm favoring in that assessment...with an Axe, if it suicides, it suicides. With a Cat, however, it might just be a cry for help...

Ok, that's what I kind of figured, but I wasn't sure if I was missing something.

Again, do what you think is best. If you want to take the gamble... go for it!

I really hope none of us are expecting to win the Golden Laurels... I know I'm not worried! I'd rather us keep up the pace and complete the game way before anyone else!

... is making me wonder. In a game I'm playing - when not posting ;) - I've taken Maos next to last City. I'm playing on Prince. He didn't even than give chemistry to me even though I only had three more turns to discover it myself - assuming that AI is somehow counting this in. So I bet that cathy won't give you calendar for peace. Maybe mono ... But if you're really able to discover that yourself in some 2-4 turns ... why would you want to make peace???

On flipping Gandhi's city ... that should work. Since you're creative the theatre will be available for halfprice - giving you 3 :culture: pt :D

Roosevelt. In the US, he's frequently referred to as FDR (as in Franklin Delano Roosevelt). We do the same thing with JFK (John F. Kennedy). With FDR, it's mostly a way of distinguishing between he and TR (Teddy Roosevelt).

@ChrTh: :thanx: FDR and TR have been new to me in Initials. But that makes sence. JFK is quite well known in Germany though since "I am a Berliner." :)

Didn't he say "I am a donut"? ;) (it's all about the ein)
