SGOTM 01 - Xteam

Glad to hear that the Vacation was good. Wish I had some 24 degree celcius weather around. It is hot and humid here, but certainly not as bad as Gator has it. ;)

If you wish to slip in and play a set, please feel free. Post a "Got it" and its yours. We're playing 20 turns per set now to try to catch up.

Good luck.

Pictures froma campaign

After getting everybody off the Inca island and on Long Island take down Seattle with the loss of a single mace.

After a little healing and some upgrades start shipping to Kufah and traveling overland through Arabia to get to the hills above Philadelphia. While waiting for the final shipments to arrive run some knights through Roosevelt's land on a pillaging expedition (gold first)

Then bomb the defenses down and that is pretty much all she wrote in 1613.

Roosevelt did try a counterattack with four knights but only one survived by retreating, three others died to the Winchester rifles of the boys in blue and gold.

Then a few more turns and a little more healing and some upgrades and it is off to Boston in 1625

Here are Boston's defenses

And here is the oncoming Egyptians

Takes a few turns to get into position and bring the defenses down to manageable but the result was preordained, though a little help was needed from newly arriving troops from the transport network

Now that we hold Boston you can ship from Seattle straight into Boston in two so that troops unload and move to the front upon arrival in Boston.

As the army moves through Arabia to Washington Roosevelt sends a expedition to retake Boston, elephants and one catapult.

It is carnage at the gates of Boston as now healed cavalry wipe them out without delaying the seige of Washington.

And here is the situation at Washington

And the Egyptians

There may be some pain on the interturn if FDR sends his cats out against the stack, but there is a pike with Medic I on the way in heal any wounded and more cavalry in the wings at Boston or on the road in.

It may take two rounds of bombardment to bring the defenses at Washington down anyway.

Have fun delivering the coup de grace to Washington, Capt BK!

Looks good Bede.

The Capt is back and up.

My availability may be limited for the next fews days and over the weekend as I'll have a housefull of guest including my 5 year old niece running around, so don't despair if I'm not around until Tuesday or Wednesday next week. I'll try to check in but playing may not be a possibility.

Turn 0 – 1640 AD There are holes in our territory that could be filled by settlers. We need to settle the islands before Gandhi or else we’re in for quite a race for domination (unless his and our territory count together, in which case we should win soon, but I doubt that).
In Civ3 I happily switch builds in a sgotm. I’m a lot more reluctant in cIV cause I consider myself still learning. Moreover, shields don’t carry over if you switch.

IBT: Thebes Pike --> Cav
Helio Cav --> Cav
Novgo Cav --> Cav
Hua Rax --> Longbow
Roosevelt destroys fishing boats outside Elephantine.

Turn 1 – 1643 AD Washington: Bombard defences down to 0%. We have over 90% chance so start pounding Wash with cavs. Take out a cross and 4 other defenders, capture 2 workers and 210 gold.
Will go for Houston and Portland next.

IBT: St. Peter Mace --> Cav
Tarsus Rax --> Cav

Turn 2 – 1646 AD Capture Houston losing a Cav. Rosie just pulled up with a musket so I promote Cavs with Pinch.

IBT: Novgo Cav --> Cav
Incan revolt in Cuzco

Turn 3 – 1649 AD Destroy Am Caravel outside Rostov.
Spread Judaism in Boston.

IBT: Cav defeats Am Musket outside Portland.
Saladin wants Spices for Sheep. I’m more tempted by fur, but decided to leave it be. We may have to remove the culture bombs soon.
Chemistry --> Printing Press
Rostov Bank --> Theatre
Tiwa Rax --> Longbow

Turn 4 – 1652 AD Capture Portland without losses (3 Cavs).
Move towards New York (capitol) with healed Cats and all available Cavs.
Set sci to 30% running almost at break even and PP in 9.

IBT: Vilcas Lighth --> Granary
Seattle Work boat --> Market
Boston starts Theatre
Houston starts Wealth
Vilcab expands.

Turn 5 – 1655 AD Not much

IBT: Defeat a Cat while another retreats outside New York.
Memphis Mace --> Settler
Helio Cav --> Settler

Turn 6 – 1658 AD Not much, preparing to take on New York.

IBT: Novgo Cav --> Cav
Rostov Theatre --> Wealth
Thebes Cav --> Colosseum
Perse Cav --> Theatre

Turn 7 – 1661 AD Quit for the night :sleep:

Like Gator, I haven't been too much in this kind of sit in Civ4, so any advice would be welcome.

I would set the science to 0 and collect cash to upgrade the remaining maces and any more that get built with CR 1&2 promotions. Don't forget to include a pike in the build queues every so often and give them Combat and Medic or Combat 1&2. We are going to need pikes when we go on the Arabian expedition.

Roosevelt should be off the playting board soon, though he does share an island with Gandhi at Chittagong so once he is off the continent make a peace deal and let's get to work on the Arab.

Capt said:

I would be very careful about planting more cities! Our finances will only get worse as we conquer more and planting cities just adds to maintenance, etc. :rolleyes:

Looking at the Victory Condidtions Screen, Ghandi currently has 27% of the world in his empire, along with 27% of the pop. That leaves us 73% and we need 64%, so I think there is enough cushion. Besides, we can't fight Ghandi anyway. We are almost to 36%, so we've got to get Roosie and Salad out of the game! :mischief:

Just keep and eye open for Ghnadi getting the UN! We'll need to have enough pop to defeat any resolutions... :mischief: :mischief:

EDIT
I agree with the 0% research and getting those Maces upgraded, they'll be useful against Salad. :hammer:

Turn 7 – 1661 AD Continue play.
Research set to 0.
New York: Bombard to 0% def. Defeat a War Elephant, a Knight, a Crossbow, 4 Longbows, a Mac and a Cat, without losses (all attacks had over 95% success rate).
Capture 191 gcs and install a governor.

IBT: Olly Jew Temple --> Market
Huamanga Longbow --> Musket
Boston Theatre --> Colosseum

Turn 8 – 1664 AD Saladin sends workers who starts irrigating the cottages outside Wash. I hate when the AI does that :gripe:
Gaul (a bit of a gamble, but we’re on a roll here, and I really want to set up for or maybe even start on Saladin): destroy 2 Pikes, a Longbow and a Musket. Rosie must have rushed cause there’s one unit left (a cat).
Destroy a cross outside Atlanta (next target).
Whip a few builds, whipping truly shines with WW as bad as we have now. Gandhi should be pretty far off a UN victory anyway, but I’ll try to keep our pop count over 50% just in case.

IBT: St. Peter Cav --> Jew Mission
Perse Market --> Cav
Vilcab Court --> Light
Moscow Theatre --> Bank

Turn 9 – 1667 AD Capture Gaul by taking our remaining Cat defender.

IBT: Thebes Coloseum --> Jew Mission
Novgo Cav --> Cav
Vitcos Light --> Granary
Wash starts Theatre
Portland starts Theatre
Helio Settler --> Grocer

Turn 10 – 1670 AD Spread Judaism in Wash.

IBT: Memphis Settler --> Cav
St. Peter Jew Mission --> Jew Mission
Yakutsk Bank --> Wealth
Novgo Theatre (switched builds b/c of WW) --> Cav
Tiwa Longbow --> Light

Turn 11 – 1673 AD Atlanta: Bombard to 0% def. Defeat 2 Pikes and a Longbow, a Mace holds the city.

IBT: Thebes Jew Mission --> Cav
Wash Theatre --> Rax (suitable city for a money town, but I think we should prepare to reinforce our troops on this island once we declare on Saladin).
Portland Theatre --> Light
Philly Theatre --> Granary

Turn 12 – 1676 AD
Defeat a Mace in Atlanta and take the city along with 120 gold. Dial up Rosie, who now has 2 cities off his (previous) mainland. He won’t give both so I decide to take SanFran as well before making peace.
Turns out SanFran is poorly defended by a Pike and a Longbow. Hopefully it falls on the next turn...

IBT: St. Peter Jew Mission --> Cav
Tarsus Cav --> Cav
St. Augustine born in Rostov, it’s a special child; bald and with a long white beard ;)

Turn 13 – 1679 AD St. Augustine goes to Heliopolis.
SanFran: Defeat a Pike and a Longbow (risky at around 70% per attack). Take the city and 101 gold.
Rosie gives Miami, World Map and Philo for peace.
Miami starts a Light.

IBT: Elephantine: Observatory --> Duct
Perse Cav --> Cav
Gaul starts Theatre

Turn 14 – 1682 AD Move towards Baghdad. Will try to expand our borders so that we don’t have to move too many turns before hitting the city. Turn Sci up for Printing Press in 3.

IBT: Heliopolis Grocer --> Cav
Novgo Cav --> Cav
Boston Colosseum --> Court
Gandhi declares on Inca (wonder if he has amphi troops?)

Turn 15 – 1685 AD Still moving troops towards Saladin’s borders, should be able to hit before my turn set is over...

IBT: Wash Rax --> Cav
The incas have been destroyed. Even though Gandhi gains a little more space on the map, this should be good news for us, cause Cori was hindering a good bit of border expansions in our Incan cities.

Turn 16 – 1688 AD St. Augustine has to turn around cause I sent him to the wrong city. Now moving towards Memphis :blush:

IBT: Printing Press --> Replaceable Parts
Memphis Cav --> Cav
Moscow Col --> Bank
New York Theatre --> Granary

Turn 17 – 1691 AD Turn off sci. Complete Kong Miao.
Cancel all deals with Salad and declare :eek:

IBT: Philly: 2 Cavs and 1 Gren defend successfully against Camel Archers.
Vilcas Granary --> Wealth
Macchu Forge --> Light
San Fran starts Light

Turn 18 – 1694 AD We’re set to strike Baghdad on the next turn.
Spread Judaism in New York.

IBT: Moscow Bank --> Cav
Novgo Cav --> Cav
Perse Cav --> Cav
Salad captures Philly losing quite a lot of units, I should have built walls, but it’s only a temporary setback.

Turn 19 – 1697 Atlanta starts Light.
Baghdad is bombarded and then attacked with our cavs: Defeat a Longbow and a Mace and capture the city with 2 workers and 151 gold.
It only takes one Cav to recapture Philly.
Outside Philly: Defeat 3 Camel archers, a Longbow, 3 Horse Archers, 2 War Elephants, a Mace and 3 Cats.
Alexandria founded, starts Wealth. Pi-Ramesses founded, starts Wealth.

IBT: Thebes Cav --> Cav
Helio Cav --> Cav
St. Peter Cav --> Cav
Tiwa Light --> Gren

Turn 20 – 1700 Defeat 2 Camel Archers outside Houston.
Kufah: Defeat 2 Longbows, lose a Cav to a Pike. This was meant as a diversion attack as Salad had quite a few troops in the city and also some galleons. I wanted to make sure his forces stayed on the island while we move towards and (hopefully) take Mecca.
Outside Philly/Kufah: Defeat a Mace, 2 Cross, 4 Camel Archers and a War Elephant. Lose a Cav.

2:45 AM now, better get some :sleep:
I've got a busy day tomorrow, but I'll see if I can't post screenies and comment more on my play. Can't think of what that should be, though :lol:
We should keep hitting Salad, hopefully he's a little gassed now. Apart from that, there's a few holes in our territory in America and there will be some in Arabia as well. We should consider settling the holes to get us to domination earlier.

Good night ;)

That sneaky Indian!!! No way no how would he consider war with Inca in my turns, then he goes and declares before we can get him into an alliance. We could have used that to get to a Permanent Alliance at some point in the future.

Now it doesn't look possible given the conditions for it, as we certainly don't want him toeholding on the Arab/America continent.

Popping in briefly...
We should have this wrapped up pretty soon on our own. I don't think we need the PA.

OK, I've got it.

Looks like were making tossed Salad? :hammer:

Seems like India is starting to settle a little bit aggressively. Do we need to build some settlers to fill in? :hmm:

Update.

Played 6 turns. Salad is down to 3 cities, one more should fall next turn.

We are at 57% land area. Hoping to finish soon? :mischief:

Continued tomorrow. :p

FURTHER UPDATE!

< <FINAL SAVE>>
:band: :hatsoff: :banana: :beer: :rockon:

We achieve a Domination Victory in 1740 AD with a score of 61941.

Thanks guys for all the lessons, excellent time!!

I just checked in and saw leif's post about the victory. Nice game.

Is anyone interested in playing a practice game before the next SGOTM kicks off? That'll give Redbad more time to whip us into shape.

I'm heading off to Melbourne for the next few days so I'll be without internet as my Grandmother's computer is down (part of the reason for the trip).

A practice game would be :cool: :cool: :cool:

Have a good trip Gator.

[party] :beer: :dance: :band:

:goodjob:

Nice game all the way around and a rousing finish from leif.

We got a little slowed down at the start but once we came off the rock it all went our way.

I'll take the shilling for the next one with the X-Team.

Well done, and a fun game it was. At the end it all went quite fast. Just 2 weeks ago we were wurried if we could finish the game in time. In hindsight I must say I was a little to suspicious about monkeys and bears on our road to victory. Only thing that really could have threaten us was Gandhi getting to large. Then we would have needed some culture bombs or something.

The start of the next game will probably coincide with my vacation. I'm not definitely committing myself to the next sgotm at this moment, but chances are good I will volunteer. As this game was so much fun.

Now I'll have a peek at the other teams. See you later, rest and alligator

:goodjob: leif

Thanks for the game every1, enjoyed.
And thanks for letting me try my hands at an invasion with massive forces. I know I could have done a thing or two different that would have speeded us up 2-3 turns. Hope I can do better in the next one :thumbsup:

I'm still going to be busy at work until early September, so having a large team could be beneficial again. Even if you miss the start we'd welcome you back. We need someone to help keep us on course.

Alan posted that we're still 3 weeks from the next SGOTM, so I'm definately interested in trying to improve my play before then. I may try to officially setup another SG for us tomorrow, if people are interested.
