SGOTM 09 - Fifth Element

The turn set looks line. Good to see that he game is moving along.

How long are we going to wait before Rexing?
Right after the Oracle we'll start build massively workers, road to the sites, settlers.
I think that the Marble city is good for the 2nd since it will speed up the Oracle. When we research CoL, Conf is likely to be founded in our 2nd city. It is better to have the be different than the NP/NE city so that if we get the Shrine, we can maximize gold by amking it our financial center (i.e. a good spot for Wall St. eventually).
I doubt we can spread easily religion without monasteries. But we can see if it's worth to revolt to OR. After all, we'll have a long building phase.

Does everyone think that Marble for #2 and NP/NE for #3 sounds good?
No.
Have you seen? cows, wheat, wine, uranium in BFC.
Those are placed by the Evil Viking to invite to settle there.
And i'll do.
City #4 wil be the NP+NE, with rice, wine and cows. And a lot more forests.

We only need one Monistary. Missionaries can all come from the same city. Even a moderate :hammers: city should be able to crank them out in 1-2 turns on quick.

Aren't monasteries obsolete already? That's why Blub says we'll need OR. Maybe it'll be doable, and no reason not to try and time CoL for this, but let's not delay cities just for this reason.

Yes, Monasteries are already obsolete. We need OR to produce missionaries.

IMHO we can give it a shot if we pop a GPro. Otherwise religion is only useful for temples and happiness.

Mining Inc will be our religion, i guess.

in my test games, confucian spread by itself. It could be worth a revolt into OR if we go into a heavy infrastructure building phase, but lets see how it goes.

I'm always a fan of Mining inc :)

I don't have a preference for which order between radioactive cows and the NP city are founded. We need a large worker army to build the FPs, (and a few lumber mills) for the NP city anyway, and biology is a way off.

I'll see what I can do about putting out a new test, but if we're just going to speed ahead it may not be worth the effort. I personally like testing for several days to get the optimum city placement and research.

I'll see if i can put something together, i'm not bad with WB.

Just remember that this game is designed to accomplish certain targets: the team able to understand them, will win.

Usually Gyathaar puts resources in a way you're undecided between 2 crappy cities, but this game seems say: i carefully prepared the spots, to you see them in the right way.

Same for the Airships thing i have exploited.

Or for paratroopers early, if you follow a certain path.

Just a heads up. I'm still around. Been following the thread but hasn't been able to contribute to the discussion.

To make matters worse, my wife is expecting and the due date is 6 weeks from now.

I can still play when my set comes around between now and then, but I'll be offline for a couple of weeks after the baby is out.

Now then. I see that we settled on the corn ... oh well, can't complain since I haven't contributes. Can someone post a dotmap so we can critique? I'll see if I can throw one together tomorrow night. We can either road more efficiently or fog bust enough so we don't need escorts to speed up moving the settlers into place.

Whoa! Congrats! Is it your first? Anyway, some sleepless times ahead... sounds similar to civ, actually. Perhaps you can press enter while rocking the cradle.

Congrats! don't worry, just tell us when you can play.

@ Unclethrill
I opened your save
:( :eek: :mad::mad:

Have you controlled what the stupid city governor did when you grew to s3?
I don't think so. Or you completely mistaken the tiles to work (despite my notes).
True, the worker was ready exactly on turn 15, but no hammers overflow.
In my attempts, warrior #1 is completed NEXT turn, warrior #2 2 turns later, when Capital grows 4.
There will be a lot of MM for next player to partially recover.
Partially, not completely. Anyway i reproduced the situation and the final result is not jeopardized (hopefully), but with a bit more attention things would have been easier.

To be clear, i'm not a MM maniac (and this is probably why i'm not a top player), but in this early stage, and at this speed every gold and hammer make the difference.
We can have some distraction in the mid-late game with lots of cities to MM, but not with a single one.

As a HoF player, like me, you probably are used to mara or epic.
This is a completely different game, you'll see.
If the previous SG was a nightmare in normal, this will be worse.

Just take a look at this post by Jesusin, one of the best players.
And member of Murky.

Sweeta, in my test Athens grew to s.2 on turn 4, WB ready t.7!!!

How in the hell you managed to grow it in turn 6?

OK, ok working fish and corn as you're doing will recover.
We'll grow 3 in 2 turns, this is the target... and you accomplished it. Sorry.

According to this post, these were the two best tiles to work and I worked them. After the city grew, I worked the tile 1E but it obviously changed to the tile 1W (2 :food: 2 :commerce:) to increase research. I double-checked the file that I started with and see now that emphasize food is turned on. I apologize for not catching that before now.

@GB: I guess you need to be sure to turn that off before you get started.

OK, criticisms are to improve and to avoid future mistakes.

but:
my long-studied plan, with comments on the tiles to work until turn 17 was posted on #3.
Just reading that and play accordingly would have done a 10 minutes TS.
The only variant was to keep the scout alive while exploring.
Not that scouting is so important, we have Airships for that.

I'll update #3 with some playing rule, for you new players.
Useful to refresh also for veterans.
If actually Sweeta turned on an automation.

Now GB has an hard job.
I'll post an autolog with comments for the targets.

edit:
@GB
please, don't waste your time to post a PPP.
just confirm you've read and approved (or your variations) to my #3.

@ALL
remember: always look my #3.
there will always be the approved plan (or to be approvved) and the roster.
As you will note, i largerly edited my #3.
I added a final target which can be competitive (i hope) comments on that are welcome.
Any comment.

I'm fine with the goals as stated, As I said before, I'm not at this level of planning, so I'll just throw comments in and let those who know more decide if I'm talking out of my hat or not. :)

The only comment I do have is that I find BLubmuz's communication style a little, hard to follow sometimes. I also wasn't expecting the level of control over the playing either. But that's not a huge problem to me. I expect it will loosen up a bit later in the game.

Maybe my poor communication style is due to the fact i'm not a native language, so i got my limits.
You're free and welcome to ask me to clarify.

No, usually i'm not a stresser. (WT was a bit, last SG)
Only for this initial phase, since i made a very accurate plan. Managing to gain 6 turns on the initial tries. I think there's no place for individualism at this stage. We're a team. A team is not a group of individuals, is a thing which acts as a whole.
Just i've found a way to be successful in our initial targets, go ahead.
This phase will be the key for our victory in game. To win a medal we need more, but i'm not optimistic, seen the level of some other team. I think that all the top players are in this competition, maybe just 2 or 3 do not participate.
But i can try to beat them ;)

After the Oracle (hopefully) i'll stop to stress people.
I guess veterans of Fifth Element can confirm this.

Absolutely, Which is why it doesn't bother me too much. I'm used to dealing with non-native English speakers every day at work, so I'm used to it.

On thing that I don't understand though I don't fully understand what you're saying in your post#3 in the log entries. I'm not sure which is your comments, and which is the autologger, and when you we're posting autolog of turns beyond where we had played to, I got very confused for a while.

and just looking at post 3 about three times writing this, I just figured out what you did. You've posted the autolog from your test game, and then cut/pasted some of the sugested goals for the turnset into it. Certainly got me confused. :crazyeye::crazyeye:

So, to summarize, I'll be sure to post my understanding on what I'm supposed to be doing when I take my turn. Then I just hope I can remember what my understanding was :)

I guess veterans of Fifth Element can confirm this.

That's what I was expecting. And to be honest, I should probably have checked out some SGoTM threads in more detail to know the level of comptition in the game.
Now I've joined though, I'll do my best to match everyone elses level of commitment.

my wife is expecting and the due date is 6 weeks from now.
Congrats Berserks! Tough times ahead maybe in some senses, but my experience is that kids just keep getting to be more and more fun as they grow up. I've particularly enjoyed introducing my daughter to Civ IV. ;)

Good luck to everyone at Fifth Element. Knock 'em dead. :scan:

I agree with most of the goals in post #3. My only disagreement is with Polytheism. Since there is no reason to go down the Asthetics/Literature path early, Polytheism is an unnecessary tech. Meditation is a cheaper tech to get us to Priesthood. We can trade for Polytheism, Asthetics, Literature, etc. later on in the game.

What does the rest of the team think about researching Meditation instead of Polytheism?
