SGOTM 11 - ChokoMisfits

Okay, I am deliberately not playing until friday morning EST to allow any discussion.

I will play 1 turn, if nothing important happens, play 1 more in that session. Stop. Upload, and wait for team feedback.

Clearly

1) Run Culture at 100%
2) Send Missionary to Saxon. Convert Saxon
3) Move units to Cordoba to prevent revolt

Confirm
1) 4 GP on fur tile
2) We control necessary resource tiles (fur, dye, silk and ivory)
3) ALL CITIES HAVE ACCESS TO fur, dye, silk and ivory
4) Run State Religion
5) Confirm religion in all cities

I'm not fully up on the bribing civics, so lets go over that.

I can't access the save so don't know whether Saxon has a religion already or not but if it does, then our missionary might fail, so we should have another in the pipework or check that we can gift the city to someone else. We should also try to grow our cities where possible to give us more votes just in case.

As for the bribing civics, if a civ changes their civics, they cannot change again (unless they have the CR wonder) for 5 turns. If we can bribe the civs to change their civics (doesn't matter to what) then they can't go to free religion (and thus stop us from winning). Step 6 in the checklist needs to be check all AI running a state religion.

Saxon doesn't have a Religion and we are running Theocracy, so the only Religion that can spread naturally is our State Religion. The possibility of natural spread of our State Religion and the fact that our last Hindu Missionary would convert it with 100% probably is partly why I suggested that it be the last City converted. Another important reason Saxon was last to be converted was it was 1t further away from Toledo or Cordoba's Fort/Port than all others Cities we needed to convert and would have delayed all Hindu Missionaries behind in the pipeline by 1t (better to delay conversion of 1 City for 1t than delay the conversion of 6 Cities for 1t each).

Great set of Turns, Mighty Dwaarf!

Only minor concerns, if Cordoba goes into revolt we will lose both our current dyes there is another near Konya but we need another border pop which we can get in time if we go 100% on culture slider. Or we can rush another settler and plonl it there to get it.

Checking the Nationality bar in Cordoba, there isn't actually any chance of Revolt right now. Our Garrison of a Musketman (7) and Crossbowman (6) providing a Cultural Garrison Strength of 13 appears to be Sufficient at the Moment. Here's the best Article that I'm aware of that describes the Mechanics of Cultural Revolt:

http://www.civfanatics.com/civ4/strategy/culture_mechanics.php

The article is pre-BtS, so some of the details may have changed, but I strongly suspect the Cultural Mechanics have not changed, since that would make BtS too different from Vanilla and Warlords in a Fundamental Game Subsystem, Culture.

Just to be sure we retain control of Cordoba, all spare Military units that aren't protecting Fur or Irovy Camps or Silk or Dye Plantations should be moved into Cordoba, our only Captured City that faces a Cultural Threat. (In hindsight, we should have captured Seville and Madrid, razed Seville and given Madrid back to Isabella or razed it.)

To go along with setting the Cultural Slider to 100%, Cordoba and Cities coming out of disorder should work maximum Commerce Tiles to maximize Culture per turn generated.

We should also adopt now to Free Speech and Mercantilism. I'd like Free Speech now, become it will cause Cordoba to pop borders in 2t rather 4t. We might also adopt Caste System after any final Pop whip we might consider; that would allow Bursa to pop Borders with just two Artists + Free Speech = 2 * 4 * 2 = 16 Culture per turn.

Free Speech also allows Konya to pop Borders to Ring 3 in 2t, covering Dye 2-SE. A Plantation can be built there in 1t with 9 Workers, I believe. May as well have three Dye Plantations, since the first two might be at risk due to unforeseen revolt in Cordoba, despite our best efforts to prevent that.

Running 100% Culture for 4t will be very Costly (-225 Wpt), so absolutely all Cities not producing something important should be Building Wealth. We may also be able to make some Technology trades for Wealth.

Good point about FS for extra culture Sun Tzu Wu. The dye in the East has a fort on it so no need for a plantation. We have enough cash to run at 100% culture for the last turns and as we dont need anything else no need to worry.

Bribing Civs into other civics. we have to be running that civic for the to swap so would suggest.
Adopting Caste/Merc for us.

Have to load save and look but at a guess and we only have to bribe them to one civic.

Just into Caste or Universal.
Tok into Theo or caste though he doesn't have Lib so not a prob, ditto Mehmed/Isa
Sal into Caste or Merc
Zara same caste or Merc

That should solve the Free religion problem and we can give them whatever tech they want as doesn't matter now.

If we use tech to bribe Just into changing civics do we incur a trading penalty with Toku due to worst enemies??

This is my fear also. Given that Justinian has Theocracy as a favourite civic, I would be comfortable with NOT bribing him to do anything, just to avoid any negative diplomacy from Tokugawa, as I would consider it unlikely for Justinian to revolt to Free Religion.

Tokugawa doesn't yet have Liberalism but may get it soon, so it may be worthwhile to bribe him into Theocracy or Caste, to prevent him switching to Free Religion in case he gets Liberalism within 5 turns.

Mehmed and Isabella don't have Liberalism, so no need to bribe them anything.

We also need to revolt to Mercantilism, for the benefit of our relations with Tokugawa.

Diplo vote will be on T299 - remember to call for a Diplo Victory vote and vote for GANDHI!!!!!! Results will be announced on T300.

If we bribe Just then yes we get the trading penalty.

I assume I will go through and bribe Toko, Zara, Sally ? on my very first turn to ensure theyre all running state civs, excluding Just, Meh, and Isa

No, you need to wait to T296 for the bribes. If you do it now (T294) then the 5 turns will elapse and they can change Civics again before the game ends on T300.

Change our Civics right away to Free Speech, Caste System and Mercantilism, but wait to T296 to bribe the others. And as you say, exclude Justinian, Mehmed and Isabella.

Gotcha. wait 2 turns, then bribe. Okay I will throw that in the plan

What I am going to do

Tonight - Post turnset plan for the next 2 turns
next morning - wake up, see feedback, play said 2 turns.

You might as well play 3 turns, because there are 6 turns left in the game, so it probably makes more sense to split into 2 x 3-turn blocks, rather than 1 x 2-turn block and 1 x 4-turn block......

Very good turns, Mighty Dwaarf!

Out of curiosity, what got our privateer?

The rest of the planning looks good to me. If we have the spare settler, should we produce one more Hindu missionary so we can convert the new city if we end up needing to use the settler?

Good luck, JH! We are almost to the finish. :D

I've just checked the combat log, and is was Friendly Fire that killed the Privateer... Zara saw the ship with hidden nationality... didn't know it was on the same side as him, and... well, you can guess the rest...

In the Diplo Victory vote, we have a projected 410 votes, versus the required 392 votes, so we are comfortable there.

It will take the Hindu Missionary 4 turns to walk to Saxon. However he can get there in 3 turns if he immediately boards "Galleon 4" which is a 6-move unit, currently docked in Toledo.

Also in that last turnset, Isabella broke free from Mehmed (predictably) and Saladin and Tokugawa entered into a Defensive Pact.

I don't think we will ever need to use that final Settler, as the Silk and Dye both look secure with the military units and spies, but it may be prudent to build one last Hindu Missionary, just in case we do need a new city for some reason.

Good Luck, JerichoHill !!!

Four turns to vote.

It is actually 5 turns to the vote, because the countdown in the victory screen will display 4, 3, 2, 1 AND 0. Plus 1 more turn to announce the result - total 6 turns left until the vote result is announced. But as per my last post, we can convert Saxon to Hindu in far less time than that.

Is there any point in splitting the turns. Just need to convert Saxon and win the vote and he game. Just finish the game then we can see if a certain team has won in 880AD?

Hap - Zara's Frigate took it down. There is a missionary complete in OW next turn guess with the rubbish countdown we have plenty of time to get it where it might be needed.

I'm also fine with JerichoHill completing the last 6 turns all at once, using the instructions already posted above. No pressure or anything... :mischief:

If anyone from another (already completed) team does happen to be reading this, I've updated our team summary, back on Page 1 - right here

I'm going to do a bit tonight since the plan seems straight forward. I will check this thread at 9pm and play according to the following. If I missed anything major, holler!

Turnset Plan

Inherited Turn
Revolt to Free Speech, Cast, Merc
Culture to 100%
Build Wealth
Route all available military units to Cordoba
Board Missionary into Toledo Galleon to head to Saxon
Confim GP on Furs

Turn 295
See what techs we can sell for Cash
Board Missionary into Toledo Galleon to head to Saxon
Galleon to Saxon
Check for fur, dye, silk and ivory
Confim GP on Furs

Turn 296
Bribe the following
Tok into Theo
Sal into Caste or Merc
Zara same caste or Merc
Convert Saxon
Last GP on furs

I think all the GPs and Warriors are already on the Furs!

Make sure the Missionary boards the 6-move Galleon and not the other Galleon in the same city.

Avoid trading with Justinian at all costs, including bribing his Civics and giving in to any of his demands.

Run Culture at 100% only until the borders pop in Konya, to give us the 3rd source of Dye. Then revert to 100% Wealth.

Also (4 turns from now) ensure that the borders of Bursa pop 1 turn after the city comes out of revolt, in order to give us a 2nd source of Silk.

Inherited Turn

Revolted to Free Speech, Caste, Merc.
Sent many many units to Cordoba
Fur tile is good
resources are good
Justinian asked us for Military Science. I declined. So that was a penalty but we did not want one with Toko so there we go.

Turn 195
Move military to Cordoba
Hindu Missionary into Galleon, due to Saxon now in 2 turns, with escort galleon
Building culture
Konya pops border next turn.

We have alot of spies!!!!
Maximizing Commerce for Culture

Nothing else of note
