SGOTM 12 - tao

Only managed 2 more turns, Galleons have almost got into position to pick up the Armies which have nearly healed anyway. Have had a peep with a Frigate around Mongolia and it is going to be quite difficult to find a landing place there are so many troops. I will probably bring the Hittites into an Alliance tieing it to peace if necessary.

Sanitation due in 2 so I shall switch some of the builds to Hospitals.

Sorry it's taken so long, but I've finally finished. The Mongols are gone, we have several Hospitals built, 1 size 13 city with more growing next turn. Replaceable Parts is due in 11

Aim: finish the Vikings & prepare for next target, get some Hospitals built.

1250 AD (Turn 0): Change Chichen Itza and Cuzco to Harbour; mm for more gold, trade world maps fo a bit more gold; we have over 90% chance of defeating the Musket in Bergen with an Army, but at the cost of many hit points, so decide to wait until next turn when there will be 4 Armies that can attack. Attack the pike in the Jungle rather than have it retreat to a city; Cav from New York defeats the Pike and a Knight the Berserk (Knight Elites); Move Knight from Entremont to Alesia. Move remaining ships to collect Constantinople Cav next turn. Press button.

IBT: Vikings lose a Berserk and a Musket attacking our Knight and Cav that attacked last turn, the Ca Elites; Beserk attacks Alesia defeating a Knight and Eliting; Istanbul: Bank>Cav; Tenoch: Bank>Cathedral; Constantinople: Cav>Pentagon;

1255 AD(Turn 1): The builds were chosen to be hospital prebuilds. 14/14 Knight Army defeats 4/4 Musket in Bergen for the loss of 3 HP; 13/13 Knight Army defeats another Musket and is 12/13; 12/12 Army defeats another Musket and is 9/13, 9/13 Army attack 3/4 Berserk and takes the city; other 3 Armies move on Trondheim taking out another Berserk on the way; mm and sell maps.

IBT: Ur: Frigate>Cavalry; London: Uni>Cavalry; Cuzco: Harbour>Frigate; resistance ends in Bergen and it riots; Sumer: Cannon>Harbour; pollution strikes Constantinople.

1260 AD (Turn 2): Attack Trondheim; 14/14 Army is reduced to 5/14 killing a Musket; 12/13 Army is reduced to 6/14 killing the next and 11/14 Army drops to 9/14 killing the final one leaving a Berserk defending which a Cav kills wiping out the Vikings. That didn’t take as long as I thought it would. Stop for the night.
Next day – sell WM for gold; change Washington to a Worker and Copan to a Harbour; move ships towards the Mongol invasion; railroad.

IBT: Chichen Itza: Harbour>Bank; Seoul: Library>Wealth

1265 AD (Turn 3): Looks like the Armies are going to get chance to heal as it’ll take that time to get the ships there; trade maps; railroad; mm

IBT: Washington: worker>Library; Kyoto: Cavalry>Cavalry (hospital); Copan: Harbour>Bank; Veii: Library>Harbour; Teot: Rifle>Cav (Bank);

1270 AD (Turn 4): move Galleons, nearly there and Armies will be healed next turn; Peep at Mongol cities – it won’t be easy to find a landing place but the troops are Spears, Pikes, Swords and MI. Only 2 turns but I’m too tired to continue again :(

Too tired to play at all the next night, so 2 nights later I continue. Sell WM; MM; this isn’t a good start all my menus are coming up blank manage to save with ctrl-S but a reboot is needed and I’ve just started. The save reloads although Civ had lost everything but my C drive so I had to search for it; check and there is no point in loading up the single Galleon this turn, I’ll wait until next when 2 more arrive; upgrade a couple of Knights; press button.

IBT: Barcelona: Court>Library; Osaka: Cav>Cav; Sumer: Harbour>Barracks;

1275 AD (Turn 5): Disperse a barb camp for 25 gold; load up Galleons, they move off next turn; drop science and turn some scientist to taxmen to avoid overrun; Workers rail; trade maps; MM.

IBT: Learn Sanitation, after much thought start replaceable parts, start to switch cities to Hospitals but misclick and exit back to the game; French start Universal Sufferage – so they went the Industrialisation route instead;

1280 AD (Turn 6): Finish changing the cities to Hospitals, Constantinople wasted shields as a result of me not switching it from the big picture; with MM Replaceable Parts is due in 15; France wants both Scientific Method and Sanitation for Industrialisation; trade WM; MM. We attack next turn.

IBT: French troop movement does not appear random and a large SOD appears on the single tile joining us the them; Rome: Uni>Barracks; Tenoch: Hospital>Cav; Constantinople: Hospital>Cav; Tiwanaku: Market>Cav;

1285 AD (Turn 7): Complete railroad joining Portugal to Korea/Spain; Germany, France and Persia have Communism. Check French SOD – mostly Crusaders so perhaps they’re building a fortification; check troops around mongol cities with Frigate – the hill are all blocked and we’ll have to land on the grassland; move Frigate out and DOW on Mongols; build Embassy with Hittites for 54 gold; Military Alliance with Hittites against Mongols; Mongols have troops fortified all round Karokorum and I can’t land next to that city; land Armies SE of Tau-Tau.

IBT: French move large numbers of troops through Burgen; Mongols and Hittites fight it out, we are not attacked; York: Uni>Cav; our Wool deal expires.

1290 AD (Turn 8): Capture Tau-Tau, big stack of Mongols prevents us getting straight at Karakorum, move some troops in with Galley; trade for a WM and see a barb camp the French are going for; check what French want for Wool – they would accept Scientific Method, but if I add any of our luxuries to the deal they could never accept it – looks like some damage was done to our rep; we go without the Wool for now; MM; trade more maps, rail.

IBT: French dispose of the Barb camp with 1 Cav and all the rest of the troops return home – I didn’t realise we had a ROP with them; Mongols attack our Army in Tau-Tau then the Hittites attack the Mongol stack; Persia demands Incense, I give it to him; Koreans want a MPP, I decline; trondheim: Worker>Library; Constantinople: Cav>Cav; Sumer: Barracks>Cav;

1295 AD (Turn 9): reduce the number of troops in Karakorum and land a few more Cavalry.

IBT: Hittites kill a huge stack of Mongols on the Iron hill; Rome: Barracks>Cav; Tenoch: Cav>Cav; Lisbon: Hospital>Cav; Bombay: Hospital>Cav; Barcelona: Library>Uni; We lose our supply of Gems and Furs;

1300 AD (Turn 10): Bombard Karakorum and capture it with only 3 Cavs;

Treasury: 88gold, -23gpt, Replaceable Parts due in 11 (60%)

Post-turn: Mongols are gone.We also need to renew some lux deals we have just lost. There is another Army in the Galleon off the coast of Mongolia and the Hitites have lost many troops fighting Mongolia. I have not finished moving all the troops and there are some Workers still unmoved. I have not done any MM or traded Maps this turn either as there are other deals to do as well. I have the Hittite Embass Screenie and also a screenshot of the French troops that crossed out lands, but I’ll post them tomorrow.

Why are we researching RepParts?Did you trade for Industrialization?Should have traded for Indus at any cost and started The Corporation, not RParts

Good progress.:goodjob:

Yikes: I just noticed that NE of Constantinople we still have a forrest. :(

I agree with Ignas and tend towards switching research despite of the 4 turns invested in rep parts.

Persia is not willing to give even 1 gpt for an additional lux, thus we should not touch the ongoing deal.

I would cancel the ROP with France as IMHO it is risky.

Here are the screenies I promised. Hittites lost many troops in the battle with the Mongols and several retreated to the capitol to heal. I pretty much left troops outside the cities alone and went straight for capturing the cities.

The French screenie is taken 2 turns into their incursion, 1 turn into our research of replaceable parts. Several Cavalry had already got through to the barb camp which I had missed by the silk. On seeing the incursion I had not spotted the barb camp and initially though they were going after the American cities. We had the 1 Army there and little else, most of the troops were off towards the Mongols. This started just before we completed Sanitation and as the French still had not researched anything else I went for RP thinking we would need Infantry very soon. French researched Industrialisation the following turn. I did not trade for it as it would take both our techs and allow France to go for Hoover. I was hoping they would trade it with someone else quickly to drop the price and give us a few more turns on Hoover.

The Workers around Constantinople were kept busy clearing 2 lots of pollution. I even shipped over 3 more native workers as the slave just wasn't getting there. There may well be a lot more of it to clear.

And btw we are three techs ahead upon French for Hoover (Sc Method, A Theory, Electronics)so it's really low chances we wil lose Hoover if trading San and Sci Meth for Indu, and let's say we lose it - it's not a big deal as we are going for diplomacy (we need just 2 productive cities with factories - for prebuild and another for prebuild 2 unless we didn't get Fission upon entering Modern Age)

Ok, so tell me if I've got this right...

Trade with France for Industrialisation and wool, using Sanitation and Sci Method. Switch research to Corporation. Trade with Persia and Greece for other luxes. We don't need factories yet, do we?

Cancel RoP with France. Maybe leave this until they have got all those troops bac home? I can then plug the fortress gap.

Hittites have troops in our area and we can give a 'leave or declare war' command. I'll leave it for a turn so that those troops get off of the iron hill but this is too tempting a target to let them get away. I'd like a couple of defensive troops here but still...

Anything else?

I was at least hoping for a confirmation that I hadn't missed anything. I'll play tonight and play it my way then...

Sorry Tone, been busy

Agreed, get those French troops home then cancel the ROP, it would be quite a battle to take them now as they have multiple Cavs etc and we would have to rely on the Armies who are elsewhere. I'm still not convinced about changing research for that reason - I keep meaning to look at the what will the AI research next spreadsheet but just haven't had time.

You may find that the choice is between building Factories or building troops so may well end up sticking a few factories in to avoid having troops coming out of our ears and paying ridiculous amounts of upkeep. It depends on what you need for the Hittites I suppose though.

Re the Hittites, you may find that you can bypass the large stacks of troops and go straight for the cities, particularly when you come to the second city. Don't particulalry want that Iron Hill pillaged though so as you say far too tempting. With the Armies in the first citiy they may continue on North (apart from pillaging) rather than attack that highly defended one. Doing this from memory as should be leaving for work so take it with a pinch of salt...

Have fun with the Hittites!

Turn set completed at last. save file link

After the Hittites were taken out I've just moved the armies over to be close to France and I've made sure that we have a few troops on the Persian border. Nothing much else to report.

0 (1300AD)
Trades:
Sci Meth and Sanitation for Industrialisation and wool from France.
Industry and Sci Meth for Gems and Communism from Persia
Electricity for Furs from Greece.

Switch research to Corporation-due in 11 but cannot maintain this level of research for long due to -ve gpt. Scrolled round the cities and moved a few troops/workers

IT
French and Hittite troops start to go home

1 (1305AD)
I issue a leave or declare order to the Hittites and they leave! For the second time in this game I mean to declare, I write it down in the log and then forget to do it before moving troops. I thus waste time rather than wreck our rep (any more?)

IT
Persians are building Uni Suff.

2 (1310AD)
Move frigates back :blush:

3 (1315AD)
Dec war on the Hittites. The RNG is not quite with us. After the first Army loses 7 hp over two attacks, a vet pike takes 13hp from our next 14/14 army. Very nervous times!!! However we take Hattusas. As this is the only town that they will be able to attack I dump three rifles there

IT
I seem to be in the midsts of a bad RNG run as we lose two rifles and the third is reduced to 1/5 (plus a couple of cavs lost) in about eight attacks from knights/MDIs. We hold on though.

4 (1320AD)
I ship in two more rifles to Hattusas, use the armies that need to move to keep a pathway open to Tarsus whilst the 1/14 army and the wounded cavs that are left heal for an attack or Tarsus next turn.

IT
Hittites drop a pair of troops off at lightly defended Karakorum so it would be good if I could take Tarsus this turn...

5 (1325AD)
The healthy troops attack. One 5/5 cav is lost in the assault but a 7/14 army finishes the town off and the Hittites are no more. Start moving the 'Japanese' workers over to develop these lands.

Palace now costs 1000 shields

6 (1330AD)
zzz. We have taken all our objectives except France but we have a lux deal going with them so time for some consolidation. Towns on the soon-to-be Hoover island get factories. Many semi-corrupt towns get Police Stations and I'm trying to flood some areas a bit more to sacrifice a bit of production for more population (and thus more income).

7 (1335AD)

Reduce sci as Corporation due next turn. The science is very finely tuned atm with just two scientists switched to taxmen so be careful if you see some mm opportunities that the science is not affected.

I wondered about starting to gift certain civs up the tech tree. We want them to become polite and gifting them now might help to avert any silly declarations against us in the near future. What do you guys think?

Edit: suggest that our next science projects are Steel and Refining

Good work on Hittites. Agree on gifting techs. Research Steel or Refining, let's hope Persia will research Rep Parts for us and maybe Flight later(low chances but worth trying). Give more work for scientists, even starve cities a bit using them.Suggest building no more units as we are paying too much for their upkeep

10 turns left on the wools from France. Keep this in place and attack nobody this turn set?? Concentrate on science and attitude??

I would like embassies with most civs so we can get lots of allies (and better attitudes) upon getting the UN. Do that soon or it can wait 'til later in the age??

I'd get embassies as we can afford them. There's not a lot of cash flowing around though so maybe start by gifting techs and/or luxes and see which civs attitude improves. We may find that we have to take out a couple more civs if they still don't like us. Persia doesn't matter as they will be our rivals but it might be good to avoid a war with them. Maybe they'll even research a tech for us.

I'm still not convinced about taking out France so quickly. They have provided us with techs all the way through the game. We are taking ages to research ourselves and need all the help going IMO. That doesn't appear to be the team view though.

I agree with ignas on no more building of units. I'd put those cities on wealth. Also starving some of the more useless towns would help unit support as those metros increase income but decrease our allowed units.

Agree on this, unless they will threaten us with culture

If we just want to improve their attitude, it is to better gift a gpt item, i.e. a luxury or strategic resource. And also more likely to deter them from silly declarations.

But gifting techs may help the research and/or free money for us. Thus it is good.

Where do we want the armies at the end of my turnset?? I'm thinking about unloading at least one on the fort opposite of France's fort for safety at least the first 6or7 turns.

I'll probably play it Tuesday evening.
