SGOTM 13 - T'dr'duzk b'hazg t't

Looks like I didn't miss much in the last day. Sounds like a solid plan for the next turn set, so cry havoc and let loose the dogs of war!

Ahhh, thats debatable.

Me personally, I always upgrade them, as it gives you one more attacker, which can sometimes make the difference, but you then run the risk that they defend and are destroyed.

My vote is to upgrade, but I'm sure not everyone will agree.

Ok, another one (I'm playing right now). Do we open borders or not with Willem ? That means trade route, and possibly easier access to the war zone.

By the way the peacedeal with Ragnar revealed his world map, and there is quite a few more cities to conquer :

Annnnd... we got a great merchant. So no education bulb. Trade mission to upgrade catapults to cannons, or simply to run max science for some time ? Settling him (I always love the +1 food) ?

In any case, this doesn't seem urgent, so I'll continue playing the turnset.

In this case the trade mission is probably best. Find the Temple of Artemis city and sail for it. As regards the Super-Medic, I'd also upgrade, but be very careful with him after.

Agreed.

If we continue with the plan to take out more of Ragnar, we're going to have to seriously consider putting the FP over there.

Two trade offers by Isabella, which one you think is best ? I'd rather deal music that everybody else has.

Also, if we (kinda) give up on the lib race, we can trade away education, that we're getting in a few turns. We still can get optics and engineering. I can get horseback riding out of the peace deal with Ragnar.

As it is now, I hesitate to make a peace deal with him : his last cities are definitely not that attractive, and getting in position to capture them, will take us at least 10 turns. So I'd rather capture the elephant city, and strike a deal. I'll wait for you advice to do so.

It doesn't sound like the Lib race is winnable. I'm OK with the blockbuster tech trade with Izzy (Music and CS for a pile of stuff) and with trading Education around once we have it. I agree that peace with Ragnar after taking the Elephant city may work OK, but I'm wondering whether it would be worth grabbing Roskilde?

Nice going. I'd definitely try to take elephant city before peace, and I agree with drlake that Roskilde might be an option. That way Ragnar is left with no resources to produce any decent units.

Sell music, for sure, but I'm not so sure about selling CS around unless we need the techs. To be honest, with no vassals, feudalism is not that useful, except as a precursor to Banking, which we need to ever get rifles. This all depends on who else has it. If most of the AI have it, then by all means sell it.

Another thing that might be worth selling is our map.

edit: after I have paused to think, sell CS. It increases our chances of picking up nice techs from education

Ok, turnset finished.
We're at peace with Ragnar, but that's the kind of peace where the guy has a gun pointed on your head, smiling wolfishly, and just counting backwards the number of turn...
There is an adequate number of troops, catapults and trebuchets now on their way to finish him right and square as soon as the peace deal is over.
After trading away a bit, the tech field is pretty level.
We missed the lib race, but we're gathering a big enough army to make him pay, that salopard d'hollandais !
Started building a few courthouses here and there to prepare for a forbidden city, and we should do that consistently.
We have to decide where to build Oxford and how much of a priority it is.

I'll do a complete log later, I'll just attach the save if you want to look at it.

Looks like it's me! I just finished school for the year today so that's perfect timing. But gone are the days when I could review the civ situation in 5 minutes. I'll have to take a look through this thing.

I'll post a tentative pre-play plan sometime tomorrow for group perusing.

Major Questions

Tech path: Are we beelining steel? I think this is about right unless we want to pick up Nationalism for the Taj? If not we can trade our marble to Joao for 13 gold and some silk!

War: Feudalism means Vassals. Do we want to Vassal anybody? We could probably take the last Viking city on the main former viking island and then just vassal the dude. Also, who's next for some taking over? Willem I think is the group's target right now. He does seem to be plotting on us. So that might be a good idea. Should we let him declare on us and sneak attack? Sack his city with his navy. I LOVE doing this. The AI puts his navy all in one city. Just declare war and take that city. Ba da bing ba da boom no AI navy.

We can trade Marble anyway, if/when we need it again we can simply cancel the deal.

NO Vassals. Its one of the options.

I like going for Steel, its usually a game changer.

Willem next sounds good to me. I would probably do this before taking out Ragnar, as that is justa formality now.

The marble trade was possible before, but not with the 12 gold ! I'm all for getting it, even though we will get silk from the north of Marseilles soon.
I never did a steel beeline, always went for rifle (but it's a long beeline). Anyway, I started researching gunpowder which goes for both.

Willem will be a good next target, but, I'm for finishing Ragnar off first.
We've just started producing trebuchet, and it will take time to get them to the field of operations. But we don't need them to finish Ragnar. With vassals off, there is no risk of him weaseling to a big guy, yet, getting his last cities will just be a warming up for our army.

The apostolic palace is confucianist, the mausoleum went, the pyramids are russian.
Catherine have astronomy, which is quite early in emperor in my opinion.

The trade mission in London (and his famed Artemis temple) netted us 2500 gold. I burned through some in a feeble attempt to catch up on the lib race, but my hopes were crushed fast enough that we're still sitting on a mountain of cash.

What is people opinion about Oxford ? We have a lot of maritime cities that net a lot of commerce, but considering our production, the universisites are going to be whipped, and our cities are already small population wise (we're second in cities and last in pop on the demographics, or something like that.)
The courthhouses and a FP (facepook ?) would probably help us a lot more in the short term : they save us between 6 and 7 on these viking cities...

Paris is now quite awesome, shelling out mace in 2 turns, and cats in 1,5 turns. I stuck to unit producing but a harbor would go a long way : it's at -4 health now, we have all three seafood resources, and it's a palsy 4 turns to build.

I built the Kashi Vishwanath, but still did not convert to hindu, since no one else is. It did spread on its own, including to england, which is a good news since she is a godless heathen and might thus convert, bringing more cities to the fold.

Now, the bad : we lost two triremes to a steroid viking one. And, any warring from now on is going to be tricky. When I looked at the "glance" page of the diplomacy screen, rainbows, unicorns and ponies flew at me. It's goddamn Woodstock out there, and you can feel the love. Any good vibe killing action is going to be tricky. And they don't even all have the same religion !

Ok, have to go to work, I'll try to do a better report with pretty pictures tonight.

I think the courthouses are a good idea. City maintenance is 126 gpt. Oxford also sounds like a good idea. Maybe we should be running engineers for a GE somewhere.

I agree with going after Willem soon. I wouldn't spend too much more effort on Ragnar, Jelling is worth picking up, but the other remaining city on the big island (Tansberg) doesn't have much going for it, and the small island to the south doesn't seem like it would be worth the diversion or the maintenance costs.

England is the other tempting target. London has MoM, which would go nice with Taj.

We are #3 in soldiers, behind Joao and someone else (probably Cathy).

Edit: And my vote is to continue the Steel beeline as well.

Go for steel. As regards Ragnar, I'd kick him off any landmass we have cities on before giving a final peace, we don't want him backstabbing us when we're half way around the world stomping others.

Whipping out Unis on a small poplulation at this moment is a bad idea. I'd build up former Scandanavia (they've a bit more land for production) and build them there naturally, and then we can think about whipping down our islands.

I agree, let the population grow, build up some infrastructure (though mainly units at our cap), and get set for the next round of wars.
