SGOTM 13 - T'dr'duzk b'hazg t't

My perspective on expansion has probably been overly conditioned by the early game, to the point that I forget how aggressive you can be once you get to the middle ages.

Oh goody, its me :)

Catherine & Vicky, your going down. :ar15:

This is my got it, and a plan.

- Build wealth/units almost everywhere
- Build MA in Paris (it has the Heroic Epic)
- Finish Kremlin, we definitely need it
- No universities - its simply too late to get anything from Oxford
- Finish off Willem
- Keep up the war against Vicky
- Start a war with Catherine, starting with horse city
- Research to rifles, then turn teching off
- Spam about 10 more settlers, but dont settle them yet, just move them into position.

Have I missed anything?

OK, slight change of plan. I have played 1 turn and whipped about 15 cities to finish various infra.

Took Middleburg, reducing Willem to 2 cities (he just settled another ice ball city). I then accepted Corporation for peace. This increased our commerce by more than 100gpt. Obviously, in another 10 turns we will mop up the 2 remaining cities.

Vicky has only 1 strategic resource, an Iron. No Copper or Horses. So I am sending the navy and troops directly to it. Once we have it, she will only be able to build longbows.

Played a few more turns.

We missed Kremlin, to Vicky, and Vicky's lands are crawling with Cannons. We haven't got enough troops to land on and keep the Iron. So a more standard war is required.

I think I am done, I will pass the baton. Played 25 turns.

Took Corporation from Willem for peace.

Lost Kremlin race, to Vicky, who promptly upgraded a pile of siege to cannons.

I took Hastings from Vicky, and a large stack of Cannons with Curassairs showed up. Things were looking decidedly dicey until rifling came in. Upgraded our little stack of by now very injured Maces. Problem solved.

The wars took a long time to get going, as both Vicky & Catherine threw the kitchen sink at us. The naval battles have been particularly nasty. Catherine has lost at least a dozen Frigates attacking/killing our navy, she still has lots of Frigates roaming the seas picking off our galleons that are trying to drop settlers off to the arctic/antartic coasts.

Vicky is down to 2 cities, and is 1 turn from getting Rifling. She will give us her second city for peace.

Catherine still has 1 decent city, but that should fall next turn. She has 5 or 6 further crappy city scattered around. I would strongly recommend taking 1 for peace, and regrouping. She has so many Frigates that it is very difficult to get troops onto her other landmasses. A surprise DoW and multple beacheads should solve that issue.

Other than that there are a lot of settlers being built. Joao has 23% of the land, we have 43%, and we need 64% for domination, so we do not need to DoW him, just settle all of the rocky outcrops.

Culture slider is running at 50% just to maintain happiness. At one stage, we were at war with Willem, Vicky & Catherine, and Willem was in emancipation. Paris had 18 unhappy citizens when its pop was 19! A whipped theatre and 70% culture rate finally stopped us losing a pop every turn.

Here is the updated bodycount:

Yes, we are on the home straight now. We have left everyone else for dead. No doubt they will beat us by 500 years, but at least we get to read their threads once we finish. :)

I just realised that there are a few troops still moving around, particularly on the former Spanish lands. They are heading for the southern tip, as there are 2 barb cities on the antartic coast.

Yeah, this game is very nearly won!

I love the fish in the ocean between former Spain and Portugal. :).

Want to finish this game up Trystero?

hahahaha at the attached image. that's one way to claim land alright!

Its the simplest and the best :)

The annoying factor is that there are just so many tiles at the top & bottom of the map. The good thing is that at our current culture slider, it only takes 4 turns for a new city to pop its borders.

edit: Also, if the new cities build wealth, they only cost a few gpt.

Wow - things are really flying.

I have a job interview on Tuesday that is going to require some preparation (it's a technical interview). I can't really focus on the game until after then, so I wouldn't mind if somebody else wants to play for me and finish this up.

I don't mind doing the finishing touch, I should be able to do it tomorrow if you trust my bloodshedding skills.

Thus said, am I assuming correctly in reading your post, your willingness to finish what I always thought was a useless piece of rock and your link with vicky's upgrade that Kremlin's discount also work for unit upgrades ?

I don't think the Kremlin has any effect on upgrades. Keep in mind she had Steel for nearly 30 turns by the turn you started.

Heh, so the strategy is now to out-breed them? Love it! If necessary, can plan for a quick war or two to grab cities at the end if we're slightly short.

Doesn't it? I was sure that the Kremlin meant savings for unit upgrades as well as rush buying.

Oh dear, close perusal of the civopedia confrims you are correct. How embarassing.

edit: it seems I have had this misunderstanding ever since changing from Civ3 to 4. In the first editions of civ :old:, there was always a wonder that reduced upgrade costs, and I have confused them. :wallbash:

 Yes, every action has an equal and opposite reaction.

ps. Good luck with your interview Trystero.

I don't think we have to skip Trystero if he doesn't want to be skipped. We have a month now for him to play his final turnset.

So in other words, trystero, don't feel like you're slowing us down if you want to wait to play.

Also, I'm woefully behind on the write-up. And I need some time to catch up on that, :mischief:.

Good luck on the interview!

Thanks guys!

Yeah, I wouldn't mind playing my turns, if you guys don't mind waiting. But between now and Tuesday it's all research papers, patent applications, and press releases for me.

In any event, this should give you plenty of time to bang out a nice plan to minimize the amount of hand-holding I require. ;)

P.S. Benginal - You are doing a great job with those write-ups. That's a really nice resource, and I'm sure any present and future lurkers will appreciate it.

Oops, I'm too late to come back and say that we're so far ahead that we can really wait Tuesday.
Anyway, good luck too. Don't assault any chamber maids, and you'll be alright.
