SGOTM 13 - T'dr'duzk b'hazg t't

I agree, no hurry. At this point, it looks like all you need to do is settle and wait for borders to pop, so we've got plenty of time.

Hey guys!

Well, the job interview went well. Maybe too well, as far as SGOTM is concerned, since I have two follow-up interviews scheduled for next week. Since I have to put together a research presentation for each of these, my time is going to be pretty limited for the next week.

Even if I could find time to play, my brain wouldn't be completely in the game. I suggest you skip me, and finish this thing up.

. In that case I'm up next after Alaman. Again there really is no rush, except I am kind of itching to see what other teams are doing. The Ducks haven't posted in quite a while. Is it really possible they've won at 400 AD,?!

Wow, that would be impressive. I'm thinking you may be right, since it is probably possible to pull off a conquest victory that fast if you know what you're doing.

I was thinking the same thing re: the ducks.

You already know this, but this is what I would do:
-Kill off Vicky,
-Take the last mainland city from Catherine, accept another for peace.
-Settle like crazy
-DoW Catherine again
-Steal underpants
-???
-Victory

agree completely. And turn up the culture slider/build culture in any city that can pop any sort of borders.

Have we decided who's playing it. I am free tomorrow, but I'm busy all weekend.. maybe we can get PS to come play it.

You should be able to finish tomorrow. If not, just upload the save and Alaman can finish up.

And we're done!

The uploaded is attached as a .doc file, it wasn't liking .docx. As usual, here's my report:

Sorry for that mix-up with bio. I should have started it sooner and gotten growth sooner. And then I over-corrected which might have cost us a turn. :(.

Overall, I had a great time playing this game with everybody and hope we can stick together for the next game. I'm sure our time won't be good enough to place but hopefully we're better than the wooden spoon! We'll find out someday, although probably not for a while given how slow everybody else seems to be playing.

I've PM'd AlanH so hopefully we get the go ahead to look at the other threads soon!

Here's the message from AlanH

AlanH,

Team T'dr'wh at no't has finished. I've uploaded the "just one more turn" save to the server. If you could let me know that everything got submitted okay I'd appreciate it!

Cheers,

Benginal

It looks good. Domination victory in 1704 AD. Well done :goodjob: You can all go and look at the other team threads now, if you wish. Please don't post in them until they have finished, though, and remember that being seen to be visiting kinda gives away the fact that you have finished.

Its because they are awesome. Sad to say, but its true.

I think we again overestimated the difficulty. DS said Emperor/Immortal, but it played like Monarch.

Yes, I'm looking forward to the next one as well.

ps: Nicely done finishing up BTW.

Let the learning begin. Copied from the PD's thread

quite surprising to read what other teams did/think:D

some points i really start to wonder about:

1. first thing i heard when reading the glh is given to an ai was:
ok, so the build the glh race turns into a capture the glh race... ...and if i remember rigth that was the principal thougth of most teammembers here. strange that the other teams didnt think along this line (really strange, if not to say weird)

We completely missed the boat (get it, archipelago map) on that one. I can't believe this didn't occur to any of us. I guess looking back we decided on setting up our own empire first and REXing first and then warring. We probably should have gotten our game on sooner. I think we also managed to underestimate how great it would be to have TGL.

2. given the task + level building any wonder that doesnt directly speed up teching or has a really great roi rate (all wonders except of oracle and, if the game might have lasted a bit longer, moai + colossus) are a waist.

I think given our grand strategy of a galleons + maces war we got appropriate wonders. I'm shocked to see some (really good) teams actually went for the pyramids. We stuck to the basics in Oracle and Colossus and then the appropriate later game wonders: GL, Moai. We pretty much understood this concept by leaving out the silly wonders that we might usually have gone for: Oxford.

3. the mids are usually a hammer grave. even when running a SE its in most times better to focus on growth instead. there are only some rare cases where the mids are actually worth it...

Agree. We knew this.

4. again, after juging our game i would even say building the glh ourselves would have slowed us down... ...our game was basically along this line:
selfresearch towards math, get the oracle, get bronze meanwhile, pick construction -> total war. cant see how even building the glh could have speeded this up... ...quite on the contrary, it would have slowed things imho

I'm sure we would have built TGL.. But it's an excellent point.

5. innitially i thought about a beeline guilds-knights to have a 2move unit, but given the early date you can start to conquer with cata + xy, i now doubt there is a viable way to compete with that... ...starting a war 20 turns earlier is a lot of advantage...

Well we had the right idea with cats and maces. Did we even think about Knights? I don't remember, but I don't think so.

Comparison with the Ducks

No meaningful comparison exists. But our score was way higher and we had more than twice as many cities as they did!
