BtS SGOTM 13 - Napoleon's Revenge

Welcome to your BtS SGOTM 13 Team Thread. Please use it for all internal team communication, turn logs and discussions. Subscribe to it to receive notifications, and do not visit the other team threads for this game until you have finished. Please also subscribe to the Maintenance Thread for this game, where teams and staff may post non-spoiler information of general interest.

In a break with tradition, I am not going to copy the Game Details into this post. You can find them in the first post of the Maintenance Thread. If any changes occur in the game settings or rules, I shall post them in that thread, and edit that post.

Please wait until your team leader/administrator/scribe has reserved a couple of top posts in this thread for game admin information. Then post here to let your team know you have arrived.

Good luck, and remember rule #1 - ENJOY THE GAME!

Checking in!

Lets have some fun.

<Who is up for being captain? >
Good question. Everyone's already said no, except Vra. Anybopdy changed their mind? If not...

I think maybe we maybe should have a less prominent captain role this time... all of us have played together before, so we don't need our hands held. I'll do stuff like send out PM's to players to remind them to check in before sets and when on deck and stuff like that. I'll delegate stuff that comes up or if I'm unavailable. Sound good?

Our play order will be the order of check-in to this thread, subject to availability blah blah blah.

Lets rock! Who considers themselves a specialist in the arts of war? I'm looking for our first great general. :mischief: :scan:

Checking in, but my main comp is currently not working. Hopefully I can have that resolved before we begin!

Good to see you all back. No point waiting for Vra... he shows up when he shows up.

OK... I guess we can start talking about strategy. Big strategic difference if we can reach AI with galleys or if we need Optics/Astro.

I'd guess at least some of the AI can be reached by galley. SIP looks pretty good, fishing/sailing will be priorities. But of course we'll need BW to make use of all that food/whip out an army. Any AI we can reach by galley must be killed in the BC years, imo. Tricky if we do not get horse or copper...

No vassals, so it is to keep the best and raze the rest.

Anybody up to make a test game? We'll need to do that to establish early build orders and settling places... but without more map knowledge it won't be useful for more than that. We'll get the save on sunday 27/2, so there's no hurry, and Narri can get his game computer up and running hopefully. :)

I am not sure axe rushing is the way to go here, seems very difficult to have success.

Rexing to all the isles and then preparing medieval war sounds more like it to me.

As for the start first thoughts are settling on the plains hill, going worker/workboat/workboat/

and tech wise going fishing/minining/bronzeworking/sailing

I'm not sure of anything. :p

My thoughts with the axe rush (or chariot rush?) is that island cities will be quite limited. We will want cities on a larger landmass asap... I think that will be a key to fast victory.

However, your point is well-taken. Wars need to be quick and efficient, and medieval war is probably the earliest way to make it. Especially if we consider we'll need to concentrate on a tech pace that gets early astronomy (I'm guessing). Then the medival techs are where the winners will (start to) conquer. But I do think that getting a foothold earlier is advisable if possible... maybe we can peacefully settle on a significant landmass. But if not, then an earlier war would be needed. Maybe not a rush... maybe with cats/swords/axe.

Tech path and build order sounds fine. But we will need to consider if giving up the seafood for an extra hammer in the capitol is wise. Its a better longterm decision to get the extra seafood, but quicker short-term to get the extra hammer. So I would say your settling suggestion goes better with my warplan, and my settling suggestion goes better with your warplan.

catas/swords/axes is definitely a plan to consider. Exploration is needed fast, that is for sure.

My feeling is that there will be land to settle with galleys.

As to settling spot, 3 food resources seem enough to me and that leaves the 4th for another city on that isle. Settling on the hammer has better production and if I read the map makers minds correctly the starting spot of our settler is either copper, iron or horse!

Move warrior 1NE :). Moving to plains hill sounds good to me the warrior might show us other seafood to replace the clams. Drawback about plains hill is that we might be left with a 1 city island. I've stared at the image for awhile and I'm still not sure if there is land 3N of the warrior. If only one tile then I'm for settling PH as there aren't enough workable tiles for two cities.

Level: Notionally Emperor, but this is a difficult map for warring.

Possible no horses or metals on our island and those in close proximity? I suspect warring with chariots & axes will be out of the question. More likely swords & cats and pray for some elephants.

Also agree with initial tech & build order with the addition of another workboat for exploring.

Are barbs on or off? Not that we'll have to worry about land barbs the now.

Yes.
on 27/2, IS (first player) should move the warrior to the hills, save the game and post it in our thread. Then we analyze the rest of the island and decide where to settle.

:agree:

@TSM: The only option listed is "No Vassals", so I assume we have normal barb activity. However, in the discussions DS mentioned that he would remove the "Random Events" from the game, and I think huts as well.

I'll post in the Maint thread to ask that the main page be updated for the options that are in effect now.

Hej... here's an idea... everyone should outline what they think seems a good strategy from what we know now. No details needed, just the strategy.

Besides... the admins are worried that with only active players we won't be viable to finish. The post counts sure show a possible lack of enthusiasm to an outsider. However, that's something of our style.

So spam the thread until the game starts.

Anybody know any good jokes?
..........

There were three blondes walking in the countryside when they came across some tracks. The first one said "Oh, those look like moose tracks.". The second one said, "Don't be silly, those are bear tracks." The thrid said, "I think you both are wrong, those must be rabbit tracks." So they decided the only way to solve their disagreement was to follow the tracks and see what they led to....

Spoiler :
....and that's how they got hit by a train. :p

Checking in!

And good jokes? The Dutch vs England cricket match was fairly hilarious.

Welcome aboard the Crazy Train, Vra! Great to have you back.

I think the whole concept of cricket is hilarious, so I'm sure you are correct about the Dutch/English match.

................. Some Yer a'peein' etiquette:

An American tourist in London found himself needing to go to the bathroom something terrible. After a long search he just couldn't find any public bathroom to relieve himself. So he went down one of the side streets to take care of business. Just as he was unzipping, a London police officer showed up.

"Look here, old chap, what are you doing?" the officer asked.

"I'm sorry," the American replied, but I really gotta go."

"You can't do that here," the officer told him. "Look, follow me."

The police officer led him to a beautiful garden with lots of grass, pretty flowers, and manicured hedges.

"Here," said the policeman, "whiz away."

The American tourist shrugged, turned, unzipped, and started urinating on the flowers. "Ahhh," he said in relief. Then turning toward the officer, he said, "This is very nice of you. Is this British courtesy?"

Spoiler :
"No," retorted the policeman. "It's the French Embassy."

Hey guys, I need a bit of advice. I been offered 8 leg of venison for £40. Is that too dear? :)

:ack:

Patient: "Doctor, I think I'm going crazy! Sometimes I think I'm a 3-ring circus."
Psychiatrist: "Its not that serious. You're just two tents."

I was walking past the mental hospital the other day,

and all the patients were shouting,

'13...13.... 13...13.'

The fence was too high to see over,

but I saw a little gap in the planks and

looked through to see what was going on.

Some b*st*rd poked me in the eye with a stick.

Then they all started shouting.

'14...14...14. ..14.....' .

OK... thought I'd better throw in one of these real posts...

Under the assumption we will conquer the world only after we gain astronomy, what is the fastest way to a post-astro conquest?

Deckhand, your job is to look at the GS bulb path... work backwards from Astronomy. Don't worry about whether beeline makes sense for this excercise. Just what techs would we do manually (or get by trade) to keep open the bulb line through astro, and which techs would get bulbed.

Indiansmoke, your job is to look at the tech tree working from an astronomy perspective. What techs are the keys to speeding things up, productyion, happiness caps, and what miltary techs?

Narri, your job is to write an essay comparing and contrasting the hammer benefits of going for grens/rifles/cavs versus medeival conquest.

TSM, you need to propose a way to fast galley conquest, because (a) that could be an early opportunity for advantage, and (b) astro might not be needed.

Vra, please list the key things we need to acheive. Which wonders do we consider essential? Is CS sling do-able and worth the costs? Any of the "first to" bonuses that we need to get?

And me... my job will be to find some more jokes. :D
