SGOTM 13 - Veteran

I've uploaded the 1425AD save on the GOTM server. In summary, we got a monopoly on miniaturization and traded for space flight. We still have a semi-monopoly on miniaturization as only the Ottos know it besides us. The Mayans are no more and we captured 4 cities. We got two leaders in the war; one made an army and one rushed the Apollo Program. We built the heroic epic in Kagoshima, military academy in Edo, and FP in Kyoto. Our uranium at Izumi exhausts itself, but we successfully poach some from the Ottomans. We only lack a native source of oil. We lost our gems from the Zulu, but traded for them from Arabia. We have a settler that could poach Ottoman oil or go north to claim gems near Zululand. The Vikings just got advanced flight and will trade for it. Maybe this and gold could get satellites from the Ottos and we've a good chance to get a monopoly on nuclear power in 4 turns. When will the other ai's get a tech? The next turn-set should be key.

No moves or deals have been made this turn. Pollution is becoming a problem. An ever increasing number of wars between the ai's should present some opportunities. We no longer have any embargoes against us and still have 8 turns of our GA left.

The complete turn-log:

1375AD(0): Worker joins Suo and it rushes a settler for 104 gold to claim free rubber or oil; Bizen rushes library for 316 gold to contest rubber; 3 workers join Kyoto and it rushes a factory for 888 gold in prep for FP--a clown is hired temporarily until we get silks; sell harbor, marketplace, and walls in Chichen Itza; wounded destroyer loses a hitpoint and destroys galley; another destroyer loses 2 hps and promotes destroying another galley; marines board transport and evacuate Chichen Itza which is abandoned; four more units airlift over to Maya lands; 6 units board transport in Tokyo and unload on the homeland; 4 units and 4 artillery move onto Mayan iron mountain; rush research lab in Izumi for 788 gold; rush airport in Echigo for 314 gold; rush tank in Nagasaki for 52 gold; rush factory in Satsuma for 104 gold; rush factory in Tokyo for 132 gold; rush factory in Toyama for 102 gold; destroyer moves to cover transport in ocean near mainland; plant spy on Maya for 82 gold--their military is 9 javelins, 6 MI, 16 muskets, 2 galleys, 16 longbows, 10 pikes, 2 swords, 1 spear, and 2 workers;

Looks llike good progress. Sadly, I won't have time to play in the next few days. Hope this changes before we win this game.

^^
Well, we are very far ahead of most of the teams. We could wait more than a few days for the next turn-set and still be ahead, most likely. Maybe you could play this weekend?

Well I've wound up my CPU and got the save.

Nice. I've been thinking we should probably not sell out for the monopoly satellites now. The other ai's should be getting some techs soon and if we get the monopoly on nuclear power, we should be able to get the others from pretty easily. Nuclear power is worth more than satellites by itself. Advanced flight from the Vikings should get a good amount of gold in trade. We probably need to save more gold just in case we're beat to the laser and robotics. Also, the Ottos are clearly the main threat and are continuing to grow. We might use RoP rape to kill their spaceship as a last resort? We should at least be ready to win earlier than 1600AD.

Well I'm about half way through, and the tech situation has moved quite a bit. First up, we didn't get Nuclear Power as a monopoly; Korea got it two turns before we were due to finish. So I gave Miniaturization to Korea to finish Nuclear Power, and to the Vikings to get Advanced Flight. And then I went for the Ottoman's monopoly Satellites; it took Advanced Flight, Nuclear Power and about 27k g. :eek: A couple of turns later 3 AI showed up with Synthetics, so I bought that and sold it on to the Ottomans for 21k g. General sales of Advanced Flight also brought in plenty of cash, so we are currently sitting on about 35k g, with an income of 3.5k gpt, researching Lasers. Oh, and the Ottomans just got Superconductor, so we are just Lasers, Robots and a Superconductor trade away from the end... it's coming on quite fast! In fact, I've been caught napping a bit on the builds. I put up a lot of solar plants, but with only 20 turns or so to go, there is no way they will make back their build cost. But hey, we have money to burn, and it's not every day one gets to the modern era with no chance of building Hoover, hydros or nuclear plants in the core towns, so maybe they are worth it just for the novelty value :crazyeye:
A dogpile has started on Portugal, so I am trying to get in on the action, but of course the transport network is overloaded with AI stacks. And we also lost our wool town to the Ottomans in a flip, which was pretty infuriating. I am arranging to poach another wool source from them, just out of spite.

Wow, that is moving fast. We're looking at a sub 1550AD launch now. We'll probably be beaten to either the laser or robotics, but maximum research should lower the cost of a trade. Hopefully, another ai will complete superconductor lowering the cost of that as well. I think solar plants are okay, at least they don't add to pollution like the coal plant in Edo and Kagoshima. I guess the Ottos completed the Internet by now and their culture must be monstrous.

Too bad about our gpt rep loss but we should have enough bank to buy the last bit of research on laser and robotics if beaten to them. I've read a bit about this recently and it seems the Byzantines lost their capital and their trade route before they were destroyed. Otherwise we wouldn't have taken the hit. I did'nt even think about it, since I didn't fancy the chances of an ai conquering their island. Unfortunately, it was the Vikings who did them in, so it wasn't a problem.

Phew, finally made it through to 1475ad.

So, what's going on?

Research
We are 2981 beakers away from Lasers, and expecting to make 1487 beakers this turn. That leaves 1494 beakers for the turn after - that shouldn't be too hard to find. So Lasers complete in 1480>1485 interturn. Then Robots costs 18285 beakers. We should be able to do that in 12 turns without too much trouble, or maybe even 11 turns. So we should reach Robots in about 1540ad.

Tech Trades
Osman is still the only guy with Superconductor, and he isn't about to sell it. Our whole treasury (47433g) is only good enough for a "doubt". I have been selling modern techs when I could get a price of over 20gpt, up to Nuclear Power. Only 5 civs know Synthetics and Satellites (us, the Ottomans, the Celts, the Americans and the Vikings). But we could consider letting out another tech - some of the civs on the right hand side of the shift-D menu have decent gold to pay, e.g. Germany has 111gpt, Mongolia has 1519g.

Conquest
I have attacked Portugal and taken 4 of their cities. Most of the units got there overland, but I have set up a sort of ship chain running west from Kappa to the Spanish mainland coast. There is also an airfield next to Leiria which can be used to reinforce the Portuguese campaign. Our modern armours have taken quite a thrashing at the hands of the Portuguese rifles, and I also lost the samurai army trying to snag a fifth Portuguese city this turn. However, I also got another leader and formed an army of 3 mechs. We have a spy planted in Portugal.

Builds
Most of the core towns are building units to throw at the Portuguese, but a couple of towns are still working on SS builds / prebuilds. The 1-tile island of Matsuyama has 86 shields invested in a palace, and in 13 turns this should be up to about 340 shields, i.e. we can probably use it as a prebuild for the 320-shield SS Stasis, which comes with Robots. Lasers will get us SS Party Lounge, which is only 160 shields, so we can build that in any of our core towns without much trouble. Superconductor opens up SS Fuel, which is also 160 shields, and SS Life Support, which is 320 shields. I started an army build in Edo which I envisaged would become SS Life Support, but we could build it elsewhere. Our best shield producer is Kyoto at 60spt.
Now might also be the time to let Osaka grow to size 12, although we would have to bring some extra workers back from the Ottoman province to guard against pollution on Theta. Nara has already stopped pumping workers and will reach size 12 this interturn.

1475ad
I have moved most of the units already this turn, including all the workers, and the military engaged in Portugal. In particular I was trying to grab Evora; my failure to make that attack stick means that there is a good chance of Celtic cavlarymen snatching the town from under our noses. :(
I haven't yet moved the freshly-built mechs and armours on Theta and Kappa, or most of the navy, which is arrayed in three locations: (1) 3 transports running a comfortable ship chain between Theta and Kappa, and one lurking in Matsuyama to no special purpose, (2) the chain of trasnports running west out of Toyama to the coast near Sagres, (3) the destroyers are in the channel between the Portuguese island and mainland, mainly just waiting to pounce on any Portuguese shipping, and to provide bomb support to our units in the seiges of Oporto and Guimaraes.
I also micro'd the towns to try and squeeze out enough beakers to allow us to finish Lasers next turn, and I did a round of map trading.

Nice! I guess I'll get to this in a day or two. Should I just finish since we're looking at 14 turns at the most?

Should we use lasers and cash to trade for superconductor as soon as we get it if monopoly? Or hold on until we notice a price drop on the sell price? We might get beat to robotics so we might need to get Kyoto on a pre-build just in case. Matsuyama could come up short if he beat us by a few turns and it probably wouldn't take him any time to build the ship. Do you think we would have enough cash to buy the rest of robotics if he beats us?

Pretty good game overall, it's well in hand at this point. It looks like we won't even have to use spies on Osman? Portugal should be trampled by the end and provide enough scientists to shorten the time/cost of robotics as well.

Nice! I guess I'll get to this in a day or two. Should I just finish since we're looking at 14 turns at the most?

:yup: Yes, please do. If we have to wait for another turnset from me, it will probably mean another two week delay. :cringe:

I've been thinking about the Superconductor / Robots situation too, and I have no idea what is the best course of action.
  • Osman got Internet in the 1445>1450 interturn, and Superconductor in 1450>1455. So the fact that he did not get a new tech in 1470>1475 means that at least he is not doing 4-turn research.
  • What is he researching now? The Ambiorix calculation estimates that Genetics is the most likely, with a chance of about 45%. Mind you, Satellites and Superconductor were both low-chance techs...
  • After Genetics, Robots becomes the most likely research (45%) if he already has Lasers. Otherwise he has only a 25% chance to go for Lasers himself - he would rather work on the top branch of the tech tree.
  • If we want to do the Lasers for Superconductor deal, and we fear Osman may be working on Lasers, then obviously we should do the deal on the interturn or risk losing the opportunity.
  • otoh, if Osman gets some other tech next turn, then we know he can't have many beakers invested in Lasers. In that case, we could wait until the mainturn to make the trade. This would have the effect of slowing up his next research (possibly Robots) for an extra turn.
  • If we are confident in our prebuilds, maybe we would actually prefer for Osman to research Robots ahead of us? But I don't know how far in advance - how many turns of research we can afford to buy.
  • We can't add our gpt to a cash payment without Osman going to "never", but we can get an equivalent effect by doing a preliminary deal in which we use gpt to buy cash from Osman. We should be able to afford at least 15k g.
  • Worst case scenario: Osman is working on Lasers right now. He either finishes it just ahead of us, or when we try and buy Superconductor, he considers it insufficiently valuable to make the trade.

My instinct is to keep it simple; trade Lasers for Superconductor at the earliest opportunity, research Robots, and hope that we have enough cash to buy it if Osman gets there first. And if we don't have enough cash, then we would have to try and work out whether we can get enough over the next couple of turns, or if we need to resort to espionage.
In this case we would expect to reach Robots in 14 turns at the latest, but it could be as soon as 6 turns, i.e. we sell Osman Lasers in 1480>1485, he reaches Robots 5 turns later, 1500>1505, and we buy it in the 1505 mainturn. Then our prebuilds have to be ready for completion in 1505>1510. Obviously Kyoto can manage 320 shields by then, and Matsuyama would be better off doing one of the 160-shields components. As for the other 320-shield component, do we even have a town capable? There are a couple of towns that make 40spt - they would reach 320 shields in 1510>1515. In any case, 1505>1510 is a best-case scenario for Robots, which relies upon Osman (i) doing 5 turn research, (ii) starting Lasers when he finishes his current tech, (iii) starting Robots after we give him Lasers, and (iv) agreeing to all our trades. Chances are there will a delay or disaster somewhere along the line.

I haven't done enough close space races (although I have won quite a few...) to really guess what Osman is researching. Can't we add Civ IV Espionage here? ;-)

Personally, I also think that trading Laser for Superconductor at the first opportunity sounds like a reasonable idea.

I am looking forward to a weekend next week, where I'll either be away meeting with some guys to play Civ or where I have a lot of time to Civ...but it'd be great if we'd have won by then.

Yeah, space games I've won haven't been this close in awhile.

I've got it. I think things will go okay. I'll post an update for discussion if there is a snag or long delay.

1540ADLaunch.jpg

This picture says it all. After the first turn it was clear we would win the race to lasers with no new tech. I traded lasers and some 12000 gold on the second inter-turn for superconductor. We also got another leader that turn versus Portugal and rushed the SS Life Support with pre-builds ready for 9 parts by 4-turns and the last part from 4-turns on. There were four flips, two to the Ottos and two to Portugal. We took out Portugal in four turns. I saved money, but got the research time on robotics down to 11 turns.

We could have spent a lot of money and rushed infra for a 1535AD launch, but I didn't know how fast the Ottos would get robotics or how much cash it would cost. Two turns later the Ottos got stealth, but it was too late to rush enough infra to lower the research time another turn. The Ottos got robotics on the turn before launch, too late to save us a turn. I uploaded the game on the gotm server and got a victory notice, but did not see the save on the submission list. I uploaded again and got the same thing. I'll send a pm to AlanH, but does anybody see the final save on the server?

Here's the full turn log:

Turn 0: Go ahead and starve (they won't shrink) a few Portuguese towns for extra science--lasers now in 2 turns. Switch Toyama and Kyoto to ICBM's for pre-builds. Transport in Matsuyama to just south of Ise. Modern armor boards transport in Tokyo--I didn't notice transports lacked movement. Two modern armor's and two mechs to airfield near Leira. Advance one mech on ship chain toward Portugal, covered with destroyer. Two destroyers shell Guimares, damaging Portugese vessel. Two more find a Portugese frigate and galleon and bombard causing 3hp damage. Transports back north from America.

Portugal has gotten Rio back from America in a flip--still 2 turns from conquering;
vet modern armor and vet mech inf. board transport for Rio landing next turn;
artillery, tow, marines, 2 mech inf and modern armor advance on Oporo;
workers are added into Osaka;

With 320shield SS Life Support rushed we only have one part left to build. Kyoto and Toyama stay on prebuilds for 4-5 turns respectively, Matsuyama will complete planetary pary lounge ub 2 turns, and Edo will complete feul cells in 4-turns. We will get robotics in 12 turns, possibly down to 11 for win or buy from Ottos or anyone else as soon as they have it. We have 48548 gold making 4743gpt. The only way to lose now is to be unable to buy robotics from Osman, which is highly unlikey.

Embargos between Portugal and Korea and Spain ends as the Glorious Portugese are destroyed;
Our cash will already buy stealth from the Ottos, so should have no problem if he or anybody else gets robotics in less than 10 turns; it is very doubtful we will lower time on robotics, but will see after resistance ends in Portugal; no deals this turn as I believe we already have enough gold to buy the rest of robotics if anyone gets it and only those that have already started on it can help us lower time now.

1495>1500AD: Zulus and Aztecs sign peace treaty;
Zulu end RoP with us;
Sumeria and France sign peace treaty;
Persia and Ottomans ally versus Korea;

We're up to 1566 bpt and need about 150bpt extra to lower time on robotics--we'll see;
We 61527 gold at +4422 gpt; no more deals are needed-- we will just look to buy robotics if available and attempt to lower research time on robotics one turn; 6 nations have the laser and could be working on robotics--especially look for Ottos on any turn after 1515AD;

1500>1505: Germany cancels RoP with us;
Mongols and Celts ally versus Korea;
The Celts end RoP with us;
France and Egypt ally versus Rome;

Last trade, hopefully--Shaka: laser > oil + wm + 20 gold; we have 56,589 gold at +4277gpt for robotics due in 8-turns and the ability to build the SS Stasis Chamber on any turn we get robotics; with the rushes made this turn we should be able to get robotics down to 6-turns next turn; switch Edo and Nagasaki to modern armor; we are now strong versus 4 civs and average to 4 others with only 19 civs left; we have 9 spaceship parts complete and the Celts are second at 6 parts;

1510AD(7): We now have robotics due in 6-turns--since we need 740bpt more to get it to 5 turns, there is no point in rushing, anymore, but we'll rush the last bit of culture being built in Portugal as the resistances end; Coimbra rushes library for 130 gold; we have 60,626 gold at +4083 gpt; this is the 4th turn the Ottos have had laser and completed their last tech, it is possible on any turn over the next 6 to hae robotics available. Both Toyama and Kyoto are over 320 shields, but Kyoto will complete BM in 2 turns; only 4 cities are still in resistance;

1525AD(10): Still no way to reduce research time further, but we could have if the buildings had been rushed just a little bit earlier in the turn-set--I just didn't realize how much resistance ending in Portugal would add to our bpt; we are now at about 2100bpt which is more than enough for robotics in 9 turns; still no new tech by the Ottos or anybody; we are 3-turns from robotics with 58,187 gold at +4000bpt; rush aqueduct at Omi for 460 gold; we have 39 cities with 379 pop. and 521 domination tiles; Celts are still second at 6 parts on victory screen; we will either buy robotics next turn for a 1535AD win or we will launch in 1540AD

Well done, Veterans :goodjob:

Check the info at the top of the progress and results page, which tells you that your final save is hidden until the results are published, to confuse the competition.

Correct, on both counts. You can post in threads where the team has finished.

:hatsoff: Thanks for bringing it home Prince. And thanks as well for rescuing the enterprise about half way through. There certainly was a point where I was ready to go bury my head in the sand for a couple of months, and hope that everyone forgot about this SG. But now we are done, and it looks like we have a great chance of getting second place, a mere 20 turns behind klarius. Feels good to be finished doesn't it? In fact it's only a couple of hours after completion, and I'm already feeling nostalgic about this leviathan of a game! Not that I'm in any hurry to play another Huge game, but I can relieve the agony by lurking on the threads of those teams that are still playing. :pat:

Great news guys!

I am very happy on us winning this game and that with a good date!

Sorry, that I wasn't as much help as in earlier games.

Everytime I started a turnset, it took me very long for a turn...therefore I didn't manage to play more often.
So, thanks to those playing more regularly for keeping the pace!
