SGOTM 17 - Unusual Suspects

Workers and Settlers for now. There are 4 sweet spots + the island to settle. And garrisons as needed.

On tech I am really torn. Mansa is out EPing us 2-1. I reaaly wish we could see what he is up to. Maybe the best strategy is to go where we think he wont. MC, Compass, or Aes. Currency is less valuable in my opinion as we can only get trade routes and old from 1 AI. And with all the banana he could go Cal.

It's going to be hard to get more cities without crashing our tech rate. If we want to expand more, I think that makes Currency a higher priority. Besides trade routes and tech trade bait, we can build markets or wealth to sustain research. The other option is to try to get CoL from Mansa and build Rathauses. That would also help even up the EP rate. I still like Currency next, since Mansa will probably tech Calendar, as you've noted.

I didn't notice we can't explore to the SW (haven't opened the save yet). If that's the case then definitely wait on the WB. Does this make Astro our tech priority?

My thinking of Currency is that it is worth a little bit more than CoL, Calendar & Monarchy.

These are the 3 techs we really want next, and Mansa already has one. Calendar was super-high priority when all we could see was bananas, but that is no longer the case.

If we research something worth less than his techs, he won't trade.

Rapid expansion before Currency & CoL (for Rathaus) will be tricky.

Oh, and another thing. As soon as Pork Centrals borders pop (and therefore touch Mansa's), we should be able to beg either Meditation or Polytheism

I'm not sure we will need Astro. This is immortal and to make us wait for Astro before we start conquering seems like it would make the game very difficult.

Maybe the island to the east provides some stepping stones south, or maybe a culture bridge from either Copper or Silver cities will be enough.
It could just be a long jungle slog west of Mansa

OK - I will look into fitting a WB into the current build plans. I have a PTA meeting after work, but will look at the save later tonight.

Wow - I haven't had that much luck since 1st year of university. :crazyeye:

Speaking of university, remember there was this exam where I was on the borderline for their cut off :p Not only did I get an interview, they loved me so much, I received an offer in three days (normally two weeks!)!!!! Really happy so been busy with celebrations, but I'm hoping to have some time to give the game a detailed look on Thursday and Saturday before I head off to Korea on Tuesday morning!!

Congrats! The joys of youth. :)

I would bet more on the LJS then the island hopping and put the hammers into a archer to scout NW. Also not, we will not know on the culture bring until settle the island or peninsula. But who knows and we can settle the crab in any event for the health.

LJS?
Spoiler :
I generally don't mind abbreviations.

Long Jungle Slog

Congrats Revent!

So based on the discussion and looking at the save, the choices that will need to be made in the next turnset are:

  1. What to research next? The leading candidates seem to be Currency and Calendar. My current preference is Currency for trades with Mansa and TRs, building wealth and markets. With all this food, getting Monarchy for HR happiness looks to be a priority, although the marble and fur will help eventually.
  2. What to build next? Aachen is building an archer which will finish in 7 turns, or could be 1-pop whipped with 19 hammer overflow. We could switch to a WB and 2-pop whip that this turn (with no hammers invested) with 12 hammer overflow, which would just about finish the archer on the next turn.
  3. Phantastic will finish a worker in 2 turns that should probably help clear jungle and connect the horses around Supercity. Next build should be a settler?
  4. Pork Central's borders will pop in 2 turns and the workers there should connect the other pigs and then the marble. Granary will be whipped when possible.
  5. We will get a GS in Aachen in 8 turns. He can be used for an academy or to bulb Compass. The academy seems like the best use.
  6. (Edit) Beg Meditation or Polytheism from Mansa in 2 turns when Pork Central's borders pop and touch Mansa's. Meditation is cheaper and more likely to succeed.

Anything else I missed?

neilmeister: Is the only difference between the real game and the "city 3 rice" micro that you built an archer in Aachen rather than the WB? I think I could use an updated test game, so I'd like to follow your micro with Chris' last test game.

The 'Neil testing - Pigs' is identical to what I played, with the only exception that we revolted to buddhism on about t52. So if you move t53 down to t54, its perfect. Sorry, I should have done this myself. edit: done!

1. Agreed, I think Currency is best for the 2 reasons you mentioned: trade bait & improved economy
2. Happy to whip the archer, but not the Wb with no hammers invested. Might be better though to delay whipping the archer until max overflow achieved, to finish WB in 1 turn. That way we finish the WB the same turn as the GS, so we can build a settler/worker with all mines/cottages being worked. I can test the options if needed.
3. Yes, I would be tempted to go another settler asap, to secure the Iron. The other option is silver, but we would need to test maintenance first, as it might be crippling.
4. Yes, pig first, then cows as it isnt jungled and both workers can move & pasture in same turn. Whip granary into an exploring archer?
5. Agreed, Academy first.

edit: congrats Revent, that is great news!

Oh, we missed one thing.

When Pork Central pops its borders in 2 turns, our borders will be touching Mansa's, which means we will have 3 beg points for every turn we have known him. Since these roughly equate to beakers, we should have enough to beg either Meditation or Polytheism. Meditation is safer and almost guaranteed.

If you have a look at my test save from 2 pages back, I think its pretty close to where we are (you will have to revolt though).

Do you want me to test the settling locations and build order in Aachen?
