SGOTM 22 - Anti-TSR

Turnset report, t203 onwards.

t203

100% Research in Steel.
Saladin pays us 90 gold
We CF Gil; close borders with Brennus. Our Galleys move into Nibru.
Darius pays us 70 gold
I've done all the shuffling units around that I can fit in before we DoW Brennus
Interestingly, the barbs recaptured their iceball iron city.

We Raze Venta immediately. It was defended by 2 knights. This promotes another praet to CR3.

IBT:
Brennus dutifully moves his stack onto our flatland, 2S1E of Bovino.

t204
Battle of Bovino:
Killed 21
Withdrew 1
Flank-killed 6
Lost 2. One was our C4 knight @96% (the best 2XP battle available); the other was an archer trying a 48% battle for 20GG points.

We take a peek into Vienne with a healthy Cuir.
7 Cats
3 Muskets
3 LBows
1 Mace

We pick off a CG2 LBow outside Calleva.
Time to upload for the night - I'm out of time.

Changed my tune just a bit about Bibrachte. Maybe upgrade a few extra grens. Capturing Bibrachte is worth it with HE. Still, not if the odds turn out to be against us.

Those 7 cats in Vienne must be the cats that were in Bibrachte a few turns ago. Hopefully they'll move to the eastern front.

I've uploaded for the night. A fresher mind will make it easier to see what to do with our Cuirs next turn.

Brennus still has a massive army. His power dropped 223K from 1,189K to 966K. Average AI power is 543K. Weakest must be Zara at 100K.

Our power is 1,403K. Decent.

Calleva is pretty tough with 40% cultural defenses. Against our Cuirs the musket's 21.6 with and 18 without. I agree with WT on knocking down those defenses. The trebs can then upgrade to cannons.

Wouldn't hurt to build a couple trebs for Bagacum (and then Durnovaria) too.

Since we have some full-strength Cuirs, we could send them to Duroc to join up with a pair of trebs.

Kind of nice razing cities. No need to defend them.

Rifling supposedly obsoletes walls, except for the defense bonus. I just tested it and they still slow down the cannon bombardment. So what is actually obsoleted?

So we have 112 war success already

Assuming I calculated that right. Not that it matters, but isn't it 4 for each kill +1 for multi-kills (like the siege) + 10 for the city.

so 24 kills is 96
6 flanked siege is 6
city is 10

We should get another ~100 pts before this is over. Maybe 200 for a total over 300.
Can we do anything with that besides get a bunch of gold for DoP. Brennus will be spending all his gold on upgrades.
Would that be enough to ask for a city? probably not, but if it was, how would we manage that? whip Nibru down to nothing and give it away? Give away HC? None of this will happen, so no discussion is required. I'm just thinking out loud.

Great progress!

Should we work an engineer in Rome, for a small chance to pop a GE for bulbing Steel?

Good question. I suppose Rifling obsoletes free Guerilla promotions from Duns.

A few more thoughts.

1. We could use our GGs for XPs for certain units, plus upgrading the general from chariot or warrior. This might be a way to get several Cuirs with Commando.
2. We could revolt to Hindu and Theo+Bureau to get Steel faster.
3. With cannons, our spies aren't really needed for revolting cities, so it might be better to keep on stealing techs at very low cost. Optics, Paper, PP, RepParts, Rifling.
4. What will we do about Emancipation when Gil gets Demo?
5. We need to be on the lookout for Brennus caravels when our galleys take the trebs to Duroc. Perhaps one Cuir in the stack could become sentry without affecting our warring.

6. Strategically, I think it makes sense to view our eastern 2 stacks as the ones that will join up with cannons to finish Brennus off. Our western stacks will go after Hanni.

Only Rome is likely affected and not even Rome right now.

Bureau looks good, even figuring in the 'high upkeep' which is 11, but we need to make sure in 6 turns (before GA end) we select the final set of civics we want for the end. I think Nationhood for drafting (possibly Rifles) and the EP boost is preferred.

Bureau should also give us a lot of overflow gold from excessive hammers. That will give us the upgrades we want and still research fast.

If Nibru runs 12 scientists, then 11 scientists, we should be very close to getting Steel in 7t. Just some fiddling should put us over.

Nibru will still get 46:culture: from those scientists, so could expand its borders to the spices 1t later by running some artists.

What explains Gil's Shuruppak having culture at Nibru-2N1W? Its culture should not go more than 2 tiles across water, right?

Is that fake culture (goes away as soon as we defog it)? Real culture (artifact of worldbuilder)? Does the code actually consider Shuruppak part of our landmass, though we know it's an island?

No, that's going to stay. 100% sure on that. It's because the tiles have his culture leftover from other cities.

On T181, 1210AD, we have 9 foreign TRs, but only with Gil. He has 10 cities. We have an overseas TR with Umma. Conspicuously absent is any TR with Shuruppak!? :crazyeye:

On T199, 1390 AD, we can see inside Shuruppak and it's showing overseas domestic TRs with Gil.

What gives?

Actually, i don't think it even needs culture on the tile. Just that Gil previously owned it.
You mean there's a goofy-assed bug in the code that says that when Shuru is at 100:culture: its own culture doesn't go to the 3rd ring, but then again it does if another city put some tile culture there once upon a time?

Because he can't own a tile if current city culture isn't on it.

I'm betting the culture vanishes once we defog it.
