[BTS] SGOTM 25 - Xteam

99% sure that Churchill has Rifling as There was no redcoat anywhere to see during the opening scouting. The Janissary and Praetorian were clearly gifted and probably to hint that the techs were also gifted. (Gunpowder and IW). We already know that Toku has CS which is one of the techs leading to Samurais. Panzers can't be built without oil. Anyway this is all speculation.

Attacking from SW of cow is not slower than attacking from the north (takes two turns to pass through Mumbai meaning that the attack takes place in 3 turns. Attacking from north we also spend two turns getting close to Mumbai and the attack happens in the 3rd turn. The important difference is that by attacking from south we are flexible regarding how many bombing runs to perform. It may be important to be able to attack two turns after declaring war because if Mumbai is not building a redcoat it cannot dry whip (whip without putting hammers into) a redcoat at size 4 so it would take two turns to build. Thus we should have time to do a bombing run + move HA to bait. If the bait is taken our priority is probably to take Mumbai and prevent further redcoats from appearing. It's a little tricky if we want to avoid splitting our stacks. Maybe staging 2W of Mumbai is better. Trailing units can be teleported by closing borders before attack i.e. a unit 1W of Mumbai is moved by closing borders with movement intact.

Quite hard to plan this attack in advance. It may very well come down to reacting to what the AI does. We could hope that Mumbai is building worker or settler and thus not growing to size 4 for a while. That would make it perfectly safe to do one bombing attack and two air strikes which is probably preferable.

Perhaps we should put the WB on queue in Guangzhou and whip a HA ASAP.

We could hope that Mumbai is building worker or settler and thus not growing to size 4 for a while. That would make it perfectly safe to do one bombing attack and two air strikes which is probably preferable. Another possibility is that he will whip archers -- certainly if we can attack while he's at pop 3.

Perhaps we should put the WB on queue in Guangzhou and whip a HA ASAP.
Won't work for a two-pop whip, but will try to maximize available attack units.

Playing in about 5 hours. Playing now . . .

["We could use the fur in Manchou soon." That's my intention.

REPORT T36-39 -- Attack Prep

T36: Make build adjustments and advance toward Mumbai
IBT: Mumbai grows to size 4, so judge a preemptive attack unlikely to succeed
T37: Infiltrate Ts (Germans 8 turns from Alpha); advance on Mumbai; capture one Russian wkr west of Mongolia and another heading for the horses
IBT: Scout produced in Mumbai; HK now pop 2
T38: Continue to advance forces
IBT: Another scout produced in Mumbai [Why not a settler?]

T39: Note Tokyo is now defended by 4 archers and a longbow, plus a galley is now at port

Planning to bait and bombard next turn, having removed all other units out of range of capital.

Will play some more in about 3 hours, but here is the save if anyone is curious or wishes to give feedback:

REPORT: Turns 40-42 -- Piece o' Cake

IBT: JC adopts HRule
T40: DOW, bait, and bombard
IBT: Redcoat takes bait; Mumbai builds a worker and is now pop 3 [Never overestimate the AI]; JC founds Cumae
T41: Lose a second HA killing the redct and advance on Mumbai; HA spots worker in Moscow but no road or mine on iron; sword confronts roaming Russian archer
IBT: Complete Kremlin [Exactly what does "-33% hurry production cost" mean?]; France cancels Peace Treaty
T42: Take Mumbai without further losses and captured two needed workers (leif's test map made it a piece of cake, and some luck kept our losses to a minimum); queued pavilion to fight NY culture; sword kills the Russian archer; note that T of Artemis has been built in Chongqing; GG born in Gang

I will bring Gspy back to America soon.

I will have time to continue play in about 14 hours, unless someone wants to take over. Would appreciate thoughts on the following:

What to do with GG?
How to take advantage of the Kremlin.
City builds -- in particular where to build another settler?
Hold or raze St. Pete?
Diplo concerns?
After taking HK, planning to rebase bomber in Istanbul for Russian attack and probably some scouting. Any problems with that?
After Russia?
Are we going to continue to leave Tokyo alone?
Any thoughts on where Washington is and what problems the mapmakers may have in store for us there?

Great progress :goodjob:

Alpha should be up for trade in 6 turns and Caesar has Monarchy so we should be able to trade for this as well.

Our military campaign is going well and it's probably time to build some more infrastructure (forges) and a bunch of settlers for the open land to the W and SW. Dot-maps with proposed city sites are very welcome :). We also need to start putting overflow into wonders for fail gold. Immediate target is ToA, but we can also put hammers into Mids. When we get the new city in "India" we can scout the island to the south with the bomber and see if it holds some nice city sites. I think we should consider the copper site so that we can build Colossus for fail gold and maybe also to keep.

Note, that HA's are now a 1-pop and workers are also 1-pop and still much better to whip than to build with food but we have to control the build-up of angry faces and use the culture slider. Well, whipping is really better in all cases except for wonders. When Guangzhou gets the Globe we can 1-pop a bunch of workers down there with big overflows.

We will have 6 pavilions in 3 turns and can start building the Globe in Guangzhou.

Bismarck is in war prep mode but the military adviser says we are safe. Not sure why. Maybe because of our military strength. His likely target is de Gaulle.

What to do with GG? Super medic chariot?
How to take advantage of the Kremlin. We have a sizable army (14 HA's 2 chariots, 3 swords, 1 cho-ko-nu) so I think it's time to build a bunch of settlers and claim all the open land - in particular the rich land to the SW. Also, we should start the push for fail gold with focus on ToA which we know will complete in ~9 turns in Chongquing. The -33% hurry cost translates to a multiplier of 1.5 on whipped hammers. This means that in most cities 1 pop is worth 30 x 1.1 x 1.5 = 49 hammers. In cities with Tao we get 30 x 1.35 x 1.5 = 60 hammers per pop for buildings because of the OR bonus. If we build forges we will similarly get 60 hammers per pop in any city and 30 x 1.6 x 1.5 = 72 hammers/pop for buildings in cities with Tao. It's the multiplication of Kremlin bonus and other bonuses that makes this so strong. I think we should 2-pop forges in our Tao cities very soon (ASAP in Guangzhou) and seek to get gold and gems improved for 4 happy faces. Forges in all cities as we move along.
City builds -- in particular where to build another settler? Forges in Tao cities, settlers in multiple cities (Note, that settlers are 2-pop now!), try to time it so that each turn we can pass overflow hammers into ToA and finance our expansion. It will take some time before we get Currency in trade or from a steal.
Hold or raze St. Pete? Hold, it has 3 resource tiles and we don't have any distance maintenance. I think St. Pete will auto raze if we capture now because it is size 1. Do we know when it was founded? Better plan to go for Moscow first.
Diplo concerns? I think we should try to keep Roosevelt, Bismarck and Caesar happy. They will be our trading partners and we should grant them demands.
After taking HK, planning to rebase bomber in Istanbul for Russian attack and probably some scouting. Any problems with that? I think the bomber needs protection. Mehmed has OB with Stalin and the bomber could worst case be destroyed by a wandering Russian unit.
After Russia? After Russia we can go for Mehmed. It will be interesting to see if he has built any Janissaries. He is a competitor for land in "Asia" so he needs to go sooner or later.
Are we going to continue to leave Tokyo alone? We should probably go after him at some point. Right now he seems like less of a threat compared to Mehmed.
Any thoughts on where Washington is and what problems the mapmakers may have in store for us there? The mapmaker has most likely put Washington on another continent. That would also explain why their tech rate is so low (High city maintenance).

Nice work CP! :goodjob:

Agree with Fred that the Great General would make a great healer with a chariot.

Are we going to need to build a city in order to allow the bomber to reach Moscow? If we're going to use Istanbul, can't we send a Horse Archer to the city to defend the Bomber?

Agree with Fred's other points.

Great progress :goodjob:

Alpha should be up for trade in 6 turns and Caesar has Monarchy so we should be able to trade for this as well. Will try to play six turns to obtaining Alpha and pause game today.

Our military campaign is going well and it's probably time to build some more infrastructure (forges) and a bunch of settlers for the open land to the W and SW. Dot-maps with proposed city sites are very welcome :). Don't know how to make dot maps, so help requested (though may not be critical to this turn set). We also need to start putting overflow into wonders for fail gold. Immediate target is ToA, but we can also put hammers into Mids. We will have 6 pavilions in 3 turns and can start building the Globe in Guangzhou. Will do, probably use overflow from forge and lths. Need a wkbt from there for India city ASAP, though.

Bismarck is in war prep mode but the military adviser says we are safe. Not sure why. Maybe because of our military strength. His likely target is de Gaulle. Again, thanks for heads up. What tells you he's on war footing?

"What to do with GG? Super medic chariot? So, all experience points on chariot? Already have a medic chariot. Should we further promote that one or use points on the rookie?

After taking HK, planning to rebase bomber in Istanbul for Russian attack and probably some scouting. Any problems with that? I think the bomber needs protection. Mehmed has OB with Stalin and the bomber could worst case be destroyed by a wandering Russian unit. Had not considered that. Will get a HA to Istanbul ASAP, as per leif's suggestion. Bomber cannot be lost.
After Russia? After Russia we can go for Mehmed. Will proceed with that in mind.
Are we going to continue to leave Tokyo alone? We should probably go after him at some point. Right now he seems like less of a threat compared to Mehmed. Concur.
Any thoughts on where Washington is and what problems the mapmakers may have in store for us there? The mapmaker has most likely put Washington on another continent. Yes, but why? What else might there be to it?

Will try to play in a couple of hours. Like to have advice on which chariot to promote.

Leif is right . Moscow can't be bombed from Istanbul. I suggest to whip a settler in Yan'an and found a new city in the NW near cow and gold:

Bomber City

From there we can reach St. Pete. and when St. Pete is ours we can rebase there and go after Moscow. We just need St. Pete to grow so that it won't auto raze. Alternatively we can attack and resettle.

I made two dot-maps. One for the area NW of Moscow:

Moscow NW

And one for SW of Mumbai:

Mumbai SW

We are in a race with the nearby AI - this is particularly true for Moscow NW because if Bismarck beats us to these spots we can't just go ahead and take them by force. We should plan ahead and have settlers on their way so that they reach Moscow about the time when it is captured. To claim all these sites we need a total of 7 settlers. Add to that some more marginal city sites and new sites on the southern island and it's clear we need a lot of settlers.

What tells you he's on war footing? Red fist in the box in the lower right hand corner.
How do you estimate the 9 turns to completion? Says so when you open the city screen.
Yes, but why? What else might there be to it? It may force us to learn Astro. If Roosevelt builds the AP we probably have to go after him at some point to get diplo points.

Bomber needs to re-base somewhere closer to HK which is currently out of range.

Wait, there is another way to reach Moscow! Looking at Ottoman culture it seems that Mehmeds second city is founded north of Istanbul. I suggest we send a HA to explore this area and protect the bomber if the city is there.

I had noticed that and was planning to have a look, but think it's just expanded borders -- if extant, much better than the sorry cow city site.

I made two dot-maps. One for the area NW of Moscow:

And one for SW of Mumbai: I still like the site 1NE of the lake better, rather than your two sites, but neither will be settled soon.

Understood. The primo site NW of Moscow will be where I begin moving toward with the next settler out.

Thinking the promoted chariot will be GG'd, as he will get to 26 experience points. [see your cross post]

Quick feedback much appreciated. Will be playing in about an hour.

Sorry been a bit busy the last few days.

Save the file as a WorldBuilderSave then change this line for the correct AI:-

Well, it worked out fine, NZ, but how do you know that kind of thing?

REPORT T42-46: Bit of Frustration

T42: Move GG toward chariots; start to manage cites to produce future forges and settlers efficiently
IBT: Bismarck completes T of Artemis
T43: Advance on HK
IBT: Uneventful
T44: Take HK, lose lighths, retain granary
IBT: France founds Orleans
T45: Churchill offers Peace, but refuse at least until we have Alpha; can't find a hidden city site for bomber, so rebase it in Istanbul; Note that Istanbul is only defended by 2 archers;
gift Bismarck fish for long-term diplo
IBT: St. Pete to size 2; JC will trade Alpha
T46: Only trade JC Math and CoL for Alpha (hopeful that we will eventually be able to get Monarchy from someone else without giving up HBR or Metal Casting);
no other trades available -- AI is technically backwards for now
note that America can research Superconductors, which seems concerning;
find that Russia has just completed and roaded his iron mine, which can't be pillaged for two turns;
bomber scouts west of Moscow and finds uninhabited wilderness, but unfortunately there is a German settler party headed that way; good news is that we will very likely be able to base our bomber in the new German city in a few turns and attack Moscow from there;
Pause game for feedback.

For Discussion:
Peace with Britain?
After gems are mined and roaded and workers returned to the mainland, considering sailing a HA to the landmass to the south of India, depositing him on the marble.
What about gifting Math to our trading partners (America and Germany) to speed their acquisition of Calendar, Construction, and Currency?
Going to scout south of Istanbul one turn then rebase bomber and scout elsewhere (suggestions?) until new German city is founded.
What about sending one settler to the NW of Moscow to take what Germany leaves available and others toward India?
