SGOTM8 - Cutlery

Hey, the "End of the game spoiler" thread is up. I was sort of hoping we would get a shot at another given that this game has to go into the modern ages.

lurker's comment: Modern Ages? The objective is Fastest finish, not Slowest, and November 2005 :mischief:

And what about the spoon ?! Alan, I think you got too caught up in the serious teams' threads.

That's just my wierd British sense of humour.

I don't mind you going for the spoons if that's what floats your boat, but I'd like to get the game finished this side of hell freezing.

I wonder what's with the brits' sense of humor indeed :p

IIRC jb I was the one to write #2, so I'll start thinking about something, but I might have to go dead in the water for a while, so SW can grab this bull of a spoiler by the horns if it is so.

we could always clear the other continents and then surround the last city with TOW infantries. Then they couldn't grow and will be easy to take out when the deadline approaches.

we also have the spam laurel to think about ;)

Who's turn is it? (now only 39 behind tao)

I really don't think that we need over-seas holdings. Maybe a colony and an airfield..... that's it.

I thought 'British' was inapropritate adjective and one should use English instead. :p

Wow that's 4 posts in a row...... EDIT: dman posted while I was typing :gripe:

Can we buy refining and steel from Lizzy for Atomic Theory? Then we'll only be 4 techs from Adv. flight.

How about starting to build some infantry and artillery so we'll have have something to put *in* our shiny new 'copters? Oh, and deciding who/what to hit and in what order might be an idea!

Suggest:
1. Outlying islands - china, greece, ex-chinese-ex-ours-now-Roman-spice island.
2. Japan/Rome.
3. Vikings.
4. Lizzie.

I say to buy everyone in on a war vs. Lizzy..... She's our only threat. The others are so far behind in techs, that it won't be that hard to squash them.

My order is
1. Lizzy
2. Greece/China (culture flip risks)
3. Japs/Rome
4. Vikings

And I'm still in favor of razing all cities. also build guerillas as they upgrade to TOW infantry. (And upgrade existing longbows to guerillas)

First of all, I misspoke on the ages so my statement for another spoiler still stands but just switch "Industrial" for "Modern".

I don't think we'll be able to reach Lizzy straight away. IIRC we'll have to make at lease one hop to get units to the English continent.

MM was up and he's got it

Yep, Lizzie is too far away to effectively wage war against. Nothing to stop us bringing her into any wars we start, though, or even dogpiling her early on.

dogpile lizzie.
nukes will be fun.
going for the spoon is OK by me :D

im out of civ and internet till monday, so wont be able to do that spoiler till then (if bigbear hasnt by then)

JB, you still have those pics and quotes you said youre saving for the spoiler?
if you could zip em together and mail them that would be great.

my mail is troykil AT gmail DOT com.

IMO, deliberately going for the spoon is lame. And wiping out our opponents except for one city, then sitting on our butts for a hundred turns or so just so we can claim to be the slowest finishers is kind of cheap. In SGOTM6, we earned our spoon fair and square (and likewise with you guys and SGOTM7). Let's just finish this out as effectively as we can.

Speaking of which, I'm going to have to ask for a skip. RL isn't terribly conducive to playing Civ this week, and we need to get this game moving again.

So that makes the roster:

eldar -
Tubby Rower -
soul_warrior -
Beorn - just played
Minute Man - skipped
jb1964 - up!
A-K - on deck

10-4 on the no wooden utensils.

I would still like to raze all off-shore cities. Unless we need them for landing helis. I've never used them so I don't know how they work.

Well, if we raze all offshore cities, that'll leave a lot of empty space. Which means that we're going to have to keep going back and clearing out newly founded AI cities.

I don't know for sure how helis work, but I suspect they're like other air units, which would mean that we'd need either a city or an airfield for them to operate from. Does anybody know how airfields in neutral territory work? Can we use them? If so, can the AI use them? Can they be pillaged by the raging barbs that'll pop up in all the empty space?

If nothing else, I strongly recommend keeping at least one city per island, so we have a foothold. And I'm not sure I see the drawbacks to keeping more - it'll give us more unit support and some specialists, at least.

Ok I'm being stupid.... I would just like to land a lot of units and wipe each island clean..... heal the units and move off to the next island. I don't think that it'll be too hard, especially since all of the other teams took off and stopped posting after they apparently got adv. flight.
