Shadow Game: Immortal w/ Sitting Bull

Spoiler T93 - Cats to the front :

T91 - 2-whipped 3 cats in Chaco, Capital, and Mound

T92 - chopped 1 cat in Poverty

T93 - 3 cats chopped in Poverty, Capital, Mound

That's 7 cats - 2 more will be chopped in Capital and Poverty next turn, 3 more could be whipped by ~ T96, and 1 scraggly cat will eventual roll out of Chaco.

That's 12-13. Too many for this war? 2 Swords and a DS are still pre-built and will need turns to finish production. Do I need more melee i.e. Swords?

Worker S of Mound - stuck trying to think what he should be doing?

Current rally point is the desert hill S of Poverty - it's 4 turns movement to attack Timbuktu, or am I wrong?

All 3 Mansa cities scouted and marked as advised by samba - each protected with skirmishers, the two smaller also have a swordsman each

Diverting troops from Timbuktu was suggested - anyone want to spell that tactic out? How should the sacrificial unit(s) be placed, to try and draw out defenders?

Useful to send a unit, chariot maybe, to pillage Mansa's iron?

Had a quick look.
3 workers on a forest hill with no roads is too much.
2f2c cottage in capital should always be run. Why run 1 food tile over that?
Any reason 2nd fur not being improved?

Spanish now have horse and copper. At some point they will likely attack you.You will have border tension soon too. Annoyed towards you and other AI but you are closest.

Starting with 8 catapults is perfect for 1 turn bombard. You are likely building too many now as you have 2 more arriving from your capital and PP. Maybe grow Chaci Canyon now and switch from catapult beofre it reaches 20 hammers. I thought you were going to have 2-3 swords at start but I wouldn't delay your attack for that. You can always replace lost catapults but maybe 1-2 swords instead. If you lose 3 catapults on capital then you still have 5-6 left. Maybe 10 in total built was a good number. You lack the techs to bribe AI into war now. Mansa will be able to bribe others. So some risk here.

Mansa likely has 4th city east of capital. Worth a scout of that area.

Unlikely to work IMO, and not worth much. Him having an extra unit in a city doesn't matter, it will get a lot of collateral anyway. Baiting is more of a HA/cuir-thing.

fair enough, misjudged that

2f2c cottage in capital should always be run. Why run 1 food tile over that?
I've made this mistake repeatedly this game - it's not me choosing inferior tiles, it's me forgetting to check which tiles are being worked, probably after a whip. Hard habit to break, I'll keep working on it.
Any reason 2nd fur not being improved?
considered it, then discounted it since it doesn't directly contribute to war goals - but then, couldn't think of anything else useful for that worker. Will improve the fur

Annoyed towards you and other AI but you are closest.
believe I'm also worst enemy [pimp]

Unlikely to work IMO
ok, won't worry it with it then

Thank you both for the feedback :)

Go direct for capital. He has no units to divert.

Don't pillage iron, with DS much easier to face swords than skirmishers.

You can trade for his dye, avoids capital unhappy next turn.
Deal will get cancelled later ofc but nice to have until your units move out.

I would road to Salamanca for traderoutes (and possibly resource gifts) with Izzy.
She won't stay annoyed for long if you gift her something..:health: resis are perfect and don't actually help her.

Spoiler T97 - rhythm of the war drums :

T93 cont - scouting E, searching for Mansa’s 4th city, switched Catapult for Sword in Chaco, improving 2nd Fur, Trading Dye for Crab with Mansa (thanks @Fippy)

T94 - whipped Sword in Mound, Found 4th city ‘Gao’ defended with 1 Axe, 1 Skirmisher

T95 - 3 Swords finished, Workers roading towards Izzy

T96 - Traded Construction for Alphabet with Willy, 2nd Fur connected, road to Spain finished, gifted Deer to Izzy

T97 - border pop, rally point could shift 1SE - or, I could just go for it. Army at current rally:

3 Swords
8 Cats
3 Spears
6 DS

with additional 1 Sword half turn behind, 1 DS full turn behind, 2 Swords 2 turns behind

Big Question - Declare now, or next turn?

Additional questions - what would you be building in the cities? More cats, more swords, something else? What should my workers be focusing on now?

In any case, I’ll be out of town all next week, so, leaving it here, on a bit of a cliffhanger :)

Yup declare now your army is already huge (for this task).

Mound city should put :hammers: into a library now.
Chaco can 2-pop whip Cat soon and put overflow into a library too.
Cap & PP i would put on Cat slowbuilds (no more whipping).

No more Swords or other cleanup units needed for now (and hopefully never), most losses will be cats.
Unit costs are already thru the roof :)
We should think about getting Priesthood fast for a possible Monarchy trade.
Riverplains cottages are not bad if cities cannot grow anyways, your workers should now focus on river tiles for recovery.

Beware of AI being bribed in Mansa has a lot of techs. Roaming ai archers nearby.

Good advice from Mylene. I don't think Mansa has horse so 3 spears is an overkill. Maybe leave one behind. Think AI need to be pleased with Mansa to be bribed. Willem is unlikely to be bribed if pleased with you. China can be bribed even if pleased with you. I suspect those in other religion won't be pleased with Mansa. China does have an archer in your city. So worth keeping a unit you can whip near there.

I wonder if you could of declared a turn earlier.

Spoiler T101 - shadows weep, walls crumble :

T97 cont - DOW on Mansa, building Library in Mound, Cats in Cap & PP, Workers cottaging riverland plains

T98 - advancing

T99 - 1-pop whip Cat in Chaco (2-pop wasn’t an option), my chariot cut off Skirmisher, denying it access to Timbuktu

T100 - Cat finished in PP, building another, now worst enemy of Izzy, Timbuktu defended by 2 Skirmishers & 2 Axes, 8 Cats bombarded defense to 0%

T101 - Sacked 2 Cats, one with Bombard, lost a Sword but nothing else - can’t imagine that going better 😀

Could either march W to Kumbi or S to Djenn - I'm thinking S

Lots of offers to trade for Mysticism, needed for Priesthood -> Monarchy - thoughts on that?

Should I still make Cats? What should my Workers be improving?

You certainly don't need melee/archers. You probably need a medic to reduce recovery time. Maybe west to Kumba Saleh then anti-clockwise finishing with barb city.

I think your army is so overwhelming you should split it. Half towards W half towards S. Then probably peace for currency and hopefully lots of :gold:? Nobody has feudalism at that point probably so no peace vassal. Then finish off the 1-city Mansa.

No, you won't want cheap crap like myst via trade. You don't need monarchy really, you need currency. Definitely take 3:gold:pt from Qin for crabs.

No, war is totally won so I wouldn't build units, unless you plan to go straight for the next victim. Build mostly research and/or run scientists.

Pillage tiles that you won't be using, or ones that you can re-improve soon. I'd pillage the mine at least, plains cottage, probably even the hamlet and build a farm.

Workers have mostly done their job in the core area. Start moving south to chop and improve tiles in your new land.

Sorry not got around to looking at this. Will try to later.

Very nice capital.15 gold shrine and granary!! 2 catapults and a sword was about as good as it would of got.

Tad too many units. Generally you just want units to replace lost catapults. Maybe leave warrior and a sword to defend city. His skirmisher might be annoying.

On his other cities maybe avoid bombarding as not on hills. Use 2-3 pults and attack with melee. Agree leave one city and grab best techs for peace.

Still no cottage on that capital grassland. Shame as 1f tiles slow growth.

Just keep an eye on Spanish as worst enemy. No stacks on your border yet.

Some point maybe send 1-2 cats and melee to barb city as that will give 100 gold or so. Maybe a worker too. Finish Mansa first. See what units you have left over. Those 2 far back catapults could head that way. Securing Mansa land and techs is priority.

It's something I also struggle with right now for early wars, how to build enough units to conquer first target, without having too much left over beyond what's needed for MP and maybe scouting.
