Bucking both long-standing Congressional policy and the Obama Administration’s terrible transparency record, a shadow group of Congressmen have apparently released every Congressional Research Service (CRS) report, bringing tons of deep insight and research into the light for public review.

CRS is a Congressional body that does the research for Congress. It is widely praised as both highly effective and largely immune from partisanship. CRS embodies the dream of scientists working for the good of the nation under the wing of government. Despite the agency’s virtue, Congress has been traditionally very wary about releasing CRS reports to the public. CRS reports have long been desired by watchdogs and held close by Congress. Congress defended the non-release of CRS research by stating that CRS works directly for Congress (a defense that raises the question of for whom Congress works) and voting down every measure to make the research more widely available.

All that has been blown out of the water though. The Congressional Data Coalition has begun releasing CRS reports to the public. Like all of them. The website is literally named EveryCRSReport.com, and it permits the public to rapidly and easily search and read the varied CRS reports that have been issued in the last hundred years or so. Apparently the Daily Caller is hosting this service, a service that will open up a vast, previously difficult to obtain resource of information for researchers, watchdogs, and the general public.

How the Data Coalition is getting the reports remains a mystery. CRS reports are prepared for members of Congress. The data dump appears to be fairly complete and is being automatically updated. These two facts suggest that some unknown Congressmen may be releasing CRS reports to the Data Coalition.

CRS is a good source. I got some stuff from them when I was in school.

We're living in awesome times. The ability to be two-faced is eroding, and I think it's gonna shake out painfully, but better in the long run.

Unfortunately, as soon as you say "the Daily Caller is hosting this service" the possibility of the reports being edited, or even outright fabricated, has to be considered. What sort of quality control is being applied to ensure that these reports are genuine? It's not like they can be readily compared to the original source material.

Nothing demonstrates a commitment to transparency like an anonymous release.

Unfortunately we're also living in a time when you can openly be two-faced and it doesn't matter. The tribal aspects of democracy have reared their ugly head as they do.

    EDIT:
I did not realize I was responding to a two-year old post. My how times have changed. Thanks Trump
