I downloaded and played late into the night. I updated this blog post in the morning:

    http://blog.muschamp.ca/2012/06/18/civ-v-findings/

I'll maybe write a proper review with screenshots, but my ever refining tactics seem to work pretty well. The game runs better than before I updated on my MacBook Pro and it seems you can share your high scores with your friends and all of Steam which seems more interesting than earning badges.

I don't know why Snapz Pro X didn't work for screenshots...

    Cheers,

All I can say is Siege Towers are :crazyeye: even on Deity. Blew up multiple 27-30 strength cities and crushed poor Morocco by like turn 75. At the very least they need to make it so that the +50% vs the city the siege tower is adjacent to doesn't make Siege Towers buff OTHER Siege Towers.

In the middle of a culture game as France, three cities on small continents, sharing my large subcontinent with Theodora and Ashurbanipal, who is surprisingly friendly. I noticw there are FAR more slots for great writings than any other type of GW, something I hope will be balanced. Loving the Chateau, especially on grassland, and during golden ages. two culture, food and gold without the improvements from flight? Yum. :yumyum:

And that huge massacre caused by two or three barb camps surrounding Lyon around turn 80 better pay off by the time I'm pumping Indies.

My standing policy in Civ V is I'll kill barbarians when some city state pays me to, other than that I go around and explore. I of course kill barbarians that are threatening my capital or in the way of my expansion plans.

I had 2 barbarian sea units (a galley and a galeass?) attack one of my cities. It had a surprising impact (about 1/3 hp down) but they broke off after that, I guess they rolled that their hp was now too low.

I'm also noticing the importance of spreading your cultural projects around. All of the guilds for example... having them all (or even a couple of them) concentrated in the same city just isn't going to work... it's too costly removing citizens from tiles to work the specialist slots if you have nothing but guilds built in your cities.

In other words, city management is shaping up to be even more important for the culture/tourism players.

So true. I had to put my musician guild in my third city that had an excess of food because my capital city simply could not grow fast enough to keep up with GP production. It does force you to have a diverse amount of cities or at least be flexible with your plans.

There really are alliances in the end of the game, it's great. All the ideologies band together.

Just sucks my first BNW game was a default loss on time.

    Ready, Set PLAY!!!
Finally have the time to launch my first BNW game :)

I will play as the Shoshone... Pangaea, standard settings, emperor
My AI opponents will be (self selected)
    Morocco
    France
    Russia
    Egypt
    Zulu
    Maya
    Babylon

I picked these opponents because I felt they each are quite strong at certain aspects (Culture, Science, Commerce, Warfare). I am curious which opponents others would self pick?

    Pathfinder choices: T2-tech archery; T5-20 culture, 1st policy Liberty for Pyramids; T17 +1 pop; T19-90 gold; T23-tech sailing; T26 +1 pop (5 pop); T54-60 faith; T55-70 gold to buy settler (2nd city T64); T56 +1 pop (7 pop); T60-60 faith;

Build choices: 1) Pathfinder, 2) Shrine, 3) Monument, 4) Great Library (finished t45 for Philo), 5) Granary (bought t45), 6) Archer, 7) Ntl. College

Religion: Pantheon @T27 monument of gods

Played 3 King games with latest patch pre BNW release. From those three I thought there was hope AI unit levels would be higher.

Haven't made it through my first BNW game yet, but so far AI unit levels seem pretty low for King. Germany and Zulu were on either side of me. Zulu had predictable early DOW and offered what I'd say was Prince unit levels. Pretty weak.

Germany had me as a buffer to the rest of the continent so I expected a huge force. While it was sizeable it was not close to Emperor levels and overall I'm a little disappointed. I was hoping to be able to drop down to King with BNW.

AI early expansion has been very limited. I have the most founded cities with 5, other Civs on my continent are at 3-4. This is highly unusual for my play style, even when I go liberty I'm usually behind the AI. Maybe the AI on the other continent are having a better time of it.

Gold is...rough! I did peak at about 70 gpt at Universities, but wars and pillaged caravans have left me in an economic freefall.

No lump sum deals and poor AI's (negative GPT is more likely than not) on my continent have left me with multiple copies of luxes and no one to trade them to.

I'm starting archipelago to (1) test the naval warfare in BNW and (2) see how effective the Exploration tree is. Also curious how the sea trade routes will fare on a water heavy map

I don't know which civ I'm choosing yet, but this time I'm self-selecting because I want strong naval civs:

    -Byzantium
    -Carthage
    -Denmark
    -England
    -Indonesia
    -Korea
    -Netherlands
    -Ottomans
-Polynesia (AI was awful at selecting the best moai culture chains that didn't sacrifice production/food in G&K. Sometimes they didn't even build moai where they should have. Not inclined to believe that would change in BNW but we'll see)
    -Portugal
-Songhai (not really an out-and-out water civ but I wanted 12 civs to fit the larger map and Songhai units all get War Canoe/Amphibious)
    -Venice

Not sure what civ I'll go for just yet, feel free to suggest

Also - some may find this tidbit interesting. I've basically decided that making your first spy a diplomat is useless. Unless you're playing on a pangaea map, it's just not likely that you're going to have discovered everyone on the map by the Renaissance era. I think you can maximize the effectiveness of that first spy/diplomat by keeping it a spy and making your Industrial era spy/diplomat a diplomat, because by that time, the World Congress should be in session and in full swing.

It's also extremely easy for an entire economy to collapse during wartime if it's not managed properly. I've found it very wise to make sure you stay buddy-buddy with your closest trading partners/the trade partners you get the most gold from. If your relationship with any of trade partners goes belly up and war is declared, is can absolutely trash your economy.

Culture victory with Poland on turn 363 on Prince. Too easy, but it was fun. things were just starting to get interesting, diplomatically. Too wiped out to give a blow by blow, but it was complete domination. Those trade routes really make the game. When you have a city that has all hills and forests, and you can ship 10 food to them, it's just amazing what you can do, the city will be producing to the max and STILL filling up the great people slots. I just had all the great artist slots filled in my capital the whole game and spammed great works. Did some archeological digs toward the end. England was the only civ that I didn't have a lot of tourism bonuses (no open borders, no shared religion), so I planted a great musician on them and won the next turn. Still think they need a better victory screen, but whatever, it was a blast. I haven't slept for 21 hours now...

    Things I've noticed so far:

    - There's a tough choice to be made between Education/Drama and Poetry.
You need those Amphitheaters and the Writer's Guild if you're going to start putting out Great Writers.

    - Political treatises seem a little on the weak side... I wish they gave a bit more culture than what I'm seeing.

    - Recommended citadel placement? That seems new. Kind of wonky, but new.

    - I can get my resting place with city states really high these days. Protection, plus patronage, plus religious powers. Trade routes also give a nice way to bump them up to allies on occasion.

    - Is it just me or do city connections give more gold now?

    - Monte declares war on me, and I take his capital. Suleiman says I'm a warmonger. But that's okay because Suleiman doesn't really have a problem with warmongers. Declares war on me anyways. Passive aggressive much, Suleiman?

Decided to play a Culture Game for fun, in my first BNW Multiplayer game in NQ. Haven't tried for culture in forever, as culture games are nearly impossible in Multiplayer... needless to say I got unlucky by having a constantly attacking neighbor and finally lost to artillery in about 1300 A.D. I had about 40 tourism per turn though with 5 cities and was having fun :p.

Still... there appears to be little use for tourism, which is dissapointing
