Sharia law in UK is 'unavoidable'

The Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams says the adoption of Islamic Sharia law in the UK is "unavoidable".
Dr Williams told BBC Radio 4's World at One that the UK has to "face up to the fact" that some of its citizens do not relate to the British legal system.

He says Muslims should not have to choose between "the stark alternatives of cultural loyalty or state loyalty".

Dr Williams argues that establishing Sharia law in the UK would help maintain social cohesion.

In an exclusive interview ahead of a lecture to lawyers in London later on Monday, Dr Williams proposes that Muslims be able to choose whether to have issues like marital disputes or financial matters dealt with in Sharia-compliant proceedings or the existing legal system.

Dr Williams argues this relies on Sharia law being better understood. At the moment, he says "sensational reporting of opinion polls" clouds the issue.

He stresses that "nobody in their right mind would want to see in this country the kind of inhumanity that's sometimes been associated with the practice of the law in some Islamic states".

Personally I think this is just a smidgin barmy. There's no way a country can have a two-tier legal system. I know Rowan means well but something like this would lead to segregation, not integration, and would set a precedent that could only lead to chaos.

Seriosuly dude, what hell does that have to do with Sharia law? I mean stopping that would just hurt people like myself, who have to go on 'the dole' due to being made redudant whilst I/we look for more work.

I don't think he does mean well in this case. The fact is that religious leaders such as Williams are almost completely irrelevant in Britain. I suspect that this is just attention grabbing fear mongering and an attempt to push religion onto the agenda. I thought he was above the kind of stunts that another Bishop tried to pull recently but it would seem I overestimated him.

Britain is only 6/7 white. By 2050 British people are a minority. Democracy can't protect you for ever. Soon we will be like the jews, a small religous and ethnical minority without a home land that is constantly harrased by the majority.
