Well, that's why I'm getting the nail polish. The bottom of my tub has an anti-slip surface built into it, and when it wears down it gets these awful orange/brown rust streaks on the smooth surface. I'm hoping I can get rid of the rust and then maintain the polish coating so it doesn't re-rust. Or at least takes a much longer time to do so.

I guess the moral of my story is that CLR can potentially have collateral damage you aren't anticipating. It wasn't clear from my post but I wasn't actually trying to clean the shower stand with it. I didn't even apply CLR to it directly. It was instead accidentally misted by the spray bottle and despite being washed off (I noticed mist land on it) within minutes, it still turned to crap. Make sure there's nothing around the thing you are CLRing that you can't afford to destroy, if possible.

I'll be sure to avoid bringing my laptop into the tub while doing this.

New guts for La Machine: (and a promised photo for @hobbsyoyo )

    IMG_20191120_212124953.jpg

This is the new killer system.

    AMD Threadripper (16 cores)
Twin Radeon Vega 64 video cards
    1000 Watt power supply
4 SSDs and two hard drives
And a beautiful new water cooling kit

I've benchmarked this thing and it just shreds my old system.

    Life is good. :)

Okay, that's the real deal in killer systems.

    Yes. That would be unfortunate.

My old one was three years old. The only reason I bought a new one is that the old one didn't fit the new processor. I wasn't going to buy it but the first couple of days I used it with an air cooled heat sink and fan, and it was waaay too hot. This new watercooler keeps my processor temp around 45 degrees at full load. I have lots of room to overclock if I want to.

Want to? Hell, I'm going for it! :D

This is always a fun read. They accidentally overclocked a 25 MHz 486 chip to 247 MHz. They even got Half-Life running for around three minutes before trashing the processor. And the motherboard. And the power supply. And the...well, you get the idea.

My brother knew a guy who used a tropical fish tank as a water reservoir for his liquid cooling system.
Kept the computer cool and the fish tank warm.

    I HAZ questions
Why is the back fan mounted outside the case ?

also looking at the dust in your PC case, I should give mine a good clean as we are entering summer time.

How does the computer utilize the two graphics cards? I once bought a set of cross-fire cards where you could chain them together but the performance improvement was negligible and I wish I'd spent the money on a single, faster card instead.

You can also try using that clear nail polish on your nails ... you may be surprised at how much stronger and smoother they feel, and also they'll look a lot better and keep out dirt (though I suggest putting on a base coat first so it'll last longer)

It splits the frames up so they alternate rendering frames theoretically giving double the performance but in practice it's far less cus of communication latency between the cards and you run into stuttering issues because not all frames are created equal. For example frame 1 might take less time to render than frame 2 so there's a stutter waiting for frame 2 to render and you get dips in your fps.

It was kind of a big thing 5-10 years ago because single card performance I don't think was nearly as good or was much more expensive than two cheaper cards, but now it's leveled out where a single more expensive card gets you better performance per dollar than two slower ones in cross fire.

If you have a pair of high end graphics cards, you'll find that they work together in tandem very well. The difference in my machine is averaging 150 frames per second.

    You are correct.

I have Radeon's flagship cards. A single card gets me about 200 FPS on one card, when I added a second card my FPS rate went up to 320 - 380. As I said to hobbs above, I average about a 150 FPS improvement with both cards. Using cheaper cards doesn't make sense for this, but if you use really good cards, the performance is worth it.

    The same with mine!

I've heard of splitting hard drives with RAID arrays, but not graphics cards.
