Shopping Thread .. or What Did You Buy?

Total War Rome II in the Steam sale last week. I'm learning it now. I was shocked the first and maybe second time my highly-promoted spies and generals died of old age. I'm used to them living for 6000 years in the Civ franchise.

Last time I opened this thread I spent too much money.
But I had bought the following 3 books
“Monetary Economics” a textbook on macroeconomics
“Power and Profit” on European medieval merchants and the flow of coins
“Sadly, Porn” the greatest book ever written

Also, a hum/buzz eliminator to plug into to make my speakers not buzz. Ask me about this one if you suffer this problem and want a fix.

I bought a new Roomba that connects to Alexa and self-empties.
I'm trying to imagine a Roomba emptying itself.

A self-directed vacuum cleaner with its own litter box comes to mind...

(honestly, how does this work?)

It backs into a stand/charger where it empties its load into a bag/container.

So human intervention is required every 60 days. I wish someone would invent a litter box I could avoid dealing with for 60 days (honestly, I do wish this).
Our backyard serves that purpose for our three cats.

A neighbours backyard will do. I honestly have no idea where my cat poops.

Yet another reason to need a smart phone. :shake:

And the price? YIKES!

I've actually looked into self-cleaning litterboxes (the kind that either run on electricity or batteries). After trying one expensive system and realizing that it doesn't work well because older cats had trouble getting in and out and they ended up using the floor because it was easier (thanks, Chloe, for all that extra mopping I had to do, thankfully the floor was tile rather than carpeted), I decided that any litterbox I use for the cats has to be senior cat-friendly.

Took long enough to get all the parts together. But I finally got everything I ordered and got it assembled.

I just received a maternity maxi dress I ordered from Amazon to wear for Easter, if I make it lol! Easter is on April 17th and I'm due on the 20th.

Anyway, this dress is the most comfortable thing ever! And it has pockets too! I'm so happy.

I also got a new lace shrug, gloves, flats, and a hat to go with it. I ordered these pretty silver celtic hair clips I'm going to use for an updo.

Now watch me be in the hospital and miss the holiday lol.

You inspired me! I got the same, along with the Roomba mop, called "Braava". They came in a set. Wife was so happy and asked me to set them up immediately so she could start playing with all the features.

It was her backup birthday present that I decided on when I found out last minute that the original gift I got her was delayed and would not arrive for weeks. She was really happy with it and told me it was a surprise because she thought all she was getting was the flowers and cake I got her. She said once she found out that I also got her a present she said she just assumed it was going to be pajamas or lingerie.

I'm really so glad that worked out for you both! Feel free to ask me for ideas if you ever want my thoughts on ways you can wow her

What do you think of the Braava? I was considering getting one to partner with my Roomba, but I read a number of negative reviews. I'd love to hear your (well maybe moreso your wife's) opinion.

Out of curiosity, can I ask what your original gift was?

My wife bought a Roomba, set it up to do the living room, kitchen and a hallway. Thankfully, she has no interest in showing me anything about it or how it works. :D

Both of the robots have been working really well so far. Especially the Roomba. I think my wife has it set where they run on alternate days. They seem to work well in tandem. The Roomba prevents buildup of debris and fur that would likely gum up the Braava, while Brava wipes away the fine dust that Roomba might have missed. Roomba was running when I left for work this morning. Floors are so much cleaner when I get home. We have all hard-surface floors (wood & tile) so they get really dusty, plus we just got a dog so the floors were starting to collect even more dirt/dust/fur and it was driving wife crazy. We both work full time, so spending hours sweeping the house is a pain. The kids help sometimes, but sweeping is mostly drudgery for its own sake. Letting a robot(s) do it while you do something more enjoyable has been a good option for us.

We had a robot before, but it was an off-brand (Xiaomi) and it sucked... well... it didn't suck... that was the problem. It just pushed the dirt around but didn't really pick up anything and then when it did, the its brushes would just get clogged and stop working properly (one of the things I like about Roomba is it doesn't have brushes to get all tangled). My wife finally gave up on the Xiaomi and I found it in a corner one day, out of batteries. I'd noticed that she had been doing a lot of sweeping lately, but I thought it was just because of the dog. Then she started recruiting the kids to help with the sweeping and I realized that the robot wasn't pulling its weight. The day I found out her original gift wasn't going to arrive on time I also noticed that the Xiaomi robot seemed abandoned.

I've since cleaned out most of the Xiaomi's clogging/tangling issues and attached a mopping module that came with the Xiaomi robot. It was unusable before, because we have a couple area rugs on the ground floor (largest area of the house) that it would always get caught on and waste all it's water before it could finish the wood floor. Now that we have Roomba, I've moved Xiaomi upstairs to our bedroom where there are no rugs to clog it or snag it in place. Plus its a much smaller room than the downstairs space that it was doing before. With the mop always attached, a smaller room and no rugs, Xiaomi is working much better, and I notice that our bedroom floor looks a lot cleaner than it used to. It has poor suction, but the mop attachment seems to cancel that out since its mopping the dirt instead of vacuuming it.

I noticed that both Roomba and Braava had a ton of negative reviews, but they also had way more positive ones. I generally read mostly the negative reviews to see if there are patterns, and most of the reviews seemed to center around poor customer service. So far the robots have been performing well, even including Xiaomi, now that I've cleaned it out and given it a new limited role.

Oh, and the original gift was a custom 40" x 11" picture frame with a custom collage of pictures from our family's last trip to Disney World, years ago when the kids were much younger. The pictures are individual shots of various family members, usually the kids, taking pictures with each of the Disney Princesses. Each picture also has the page of the particular Princess' signature from my daughter's signature book she carried around the park to get the character's signatures wherever we went in the park. Because of the pandemic we cancelled our planned vacation to Disney World, two years in a row, and then had a Disney Cruise cancelled, also because of the pandemic. Disney World is very special to us, because its where we had our honeymoon so not getting to go back for years has been a bummer. The frame is still coming, it just wasn't going to arrive in time for her birthday.

We're building a concrete wall between the orchid garden and the carport. Next will be a concrete wall atop east end of the seawall to replace my wooden '"singing fence" which left during the typhoon. We went inti Tag to buy paint, etc. I was surprised to see the normal cost had doubled. The problem is the bottleneck in importing paint onto our island; so all colors must be mixed,

The cost of fuel has also doubled, thanks to the effects of the Russian/Ukraine war.
