Should I be having problems with this hardware?

Run memtest for at least 10 passes on each memory module separately and in the same socket. Try to test said RAM on another pc as well. Try BTS on the other pc too and see if the same thing happens. If it does, its definitely the RAM, if not, then you have other problems.
You could try to find a temporary GPU -- go to an electronics store and buy a cheap GPU for like 50$, you can return it when you're done testing, just make sure they dont charge restocking. I also didnt notice if you said anywhere whether or not this happens with other graphics and memory intensive games.

I installed vista and everything seems to be working very well now. I can run at 1280x1025 with high graphics settings which is what i am used to. I played a while on my game that was furthest advanced and was crashing every three unit moves previously for multiple turns and no shutdowns.

There are a couple other posts in this forum where people seem to behaving similar problems. I think some of the problems are due to ATI drivers for XP. At least for some of their older cards.

Also, this was a new game I had started on a smaller map (still large but not huge like I normally play) and was pre-gunpowder so given that I never had these problems before playing on huge I am really thinking something is wrong as oppossed to my hardware just not being up to it.

Since it happened early, it probably is a hardware issue, and not the 'memory leak' problem.

But to be sure, I'd suggest uninstalling the Omega driver and going back to a driver that is appropriate for your video card. Go with whatever driver the computer maker or ATI says is best.

Then uninstall BTS and reinstall it.

Another issue to check is that the RAM settings, especially the timings and voltages are correct. Try to get help on your model of RAM from the original maker, especially as to what BIOS settings are preferable. Even an incorrect timing setting can cause the RAM to act faulty.

Last issue to consider would be power supply, temperature.

EDIT: good that you seem to have the problem solved.
