Should I buy EU4 or Total War: Warhammer?

Since I didn't really like Civ VI, I've been looking for other games to play in its place. I already bought Crusader Kings II a while ago and absolutely LOVED it. So with the Summer Sale going on, I thought to myself "well, maybe I should get EU4 too", and I'm quite inclined to do that already. However, a friend of mine with taste in games is very similar to mine has been pushing me to buy Total War: Warhammer instead. I took a look at it and it looks pretty cool, I like how you fight the individual battles instead of just thinking of the bigger picture. So now I don't really know which one I want.
Which do you guys recommend and why?

I'm asking myself the same thing right now. Both are games I'd probably like, but I think I'd enjoy Warhammer more. Unfortunately I'm really turned off by all the DLC. I fear I'm gonna feel really foolish if I buy now and a GOTY or complete edition is released in a few weeks.

I just checked the release date for Warhammer 2. It's september 28. Might be better to wait until then.

Personally, I haven't been able to really enjoy Total War games since I discovered EU. The battles in the former are still good, but the strategic campaign side is so shallow and tedious compared to Paradox's games that I get bored very quickly. Although, as a result of this, I haven't actually played Warhammer Total War so they might have improved things (I doubt it, but it's possible).

The thing to watch out for with EU4 is the high initial buy in - you will need to also buy some DLC. Whilst technically you don't need to buy any DLC to play it, the game is effectively broken if you don't buy a certain few of them.

You'll have to do some research or maybe someone will come by and tell you which ones are kinda mandatory.
