I just got meself a new laptop (I apologize, but I didn't have the patience to build my own compy), and I was wondering, should I go ahead and get the current version of firefox?

Opera and Firefox are the best in my opinion. Firefox is first for me because it has so many extensions, but Opera is a very good browser as well.

I dont suggest IE of any flavour.

Sure, why not. More choices are better. I do use FF3 a lot, it's almost by browser of choice. It's far and away better than the previous versions. I just wish they'd get a handle on the memory management.

Currently, with 19 tabs open, several of them containign flash video's, FF is using 170mb RAM.

Id say thats pretty good memory management.

Oh yes, FF has also been running for nearly 4 days straight.

Yeah, until you try to run an interactive map off of www.wunderground.com and it ends up taking 1.4gb of RAM. That's "G", as in "Gigabyte". Four tabs open, maybe it was five.

In fairness to IE, I don't remember what it was pulling down. It wasn't that much, but it was a lot.

Go with firefox, then you wont get the headaches related to malware that gets sent in via IE.

Got a link to the specific map you're talking about?

EDIT - is the WunderMap the one you were talking about?

Memory management in FF is terrible... I've always suffered major memory leaks on every system I've run it on (that's 4 that I use/used regularly).

Opera with 10-20 or more tabs uses about 100 megs of RAM for me. 60,000-120,000 kb (i think that's the right initials) is what I have seen. I rarely have it open for more than an hour or two though. Max 4 usually.

Yeah, that's the one. I know it's the map, because whatever browser I use ends up using a lot of RAM. But you need to leave it up for a day or so before it starts getting really bad.

I've been running that map non-stop since I posted my previous reply and this is my memory usage so far:

Its gone up a total of 3mb from when I started up the map.

Is that vista? Vista may handle the memory management differently. In any event, it took me over a day to wrack up that much memory.

I'll run a test tonight between IE and FF on that map, and in the morning see where it's at.

I should add I was tracking hurricanes, and that may have something to do with it.

I did kick off a test, here's the start of it. IE6 SP2 and FF3.01.

I have no problems with memory in FF3, and I haven't a real fancy machine. Unless you're playing heavy games and browsing at the same time () or have old machine there shouldn't be much of a problem.
